NM-1FE1R2W เมื่อ token ring มาเจอกับ Fast Ethernet ใน module เดียวกัน

ตัว Module ใส่อยู่ใน CISCO 3620 ได้จากอีเบย์เมื่อสามสี่ปีที่แล้ว

มี 1 port Fast Ethernet 10/100

และที่สำคัญมี Token Ring 4/16 ด้วย ใส่ได้ทั้ง DB9 และ RJ45

ได้ Module นี้มาหลายปีแล้วในฐานะคนคลั่งเทคโนโลยีเน็ตเวอร์คโบราณ ดีใจมากที่มี เพราะนานๆจะเจอเทคโนโลยีที่ตายแล้วอย่าง Token Ring ไปปนอยู่กับ interface ที่ทันสมัยอย่าง Fast Ethernet แต่คงไม่มีหวังที่จะเจอกับ Gigabit Ethernet ซึ่งน่าเสียดายที่เทคโนโลยีนี้ไม่ได้พัฒนาไปเป็น Gigabit กับเขาด้วย

เมื่อบูต CISCO 3620 ขึ้นมา ปรากฏว่า IOS ตรวจเจอตั้งแต่แรก

มี interface เยอะไปหน่อยใน WIC กับอีกโมดูล นะครับ แต่ให้ดูที่ FE และ TO ซึ่งจะเน้นที่โทเคนริงเป็นหลัก เพราะ Fast Ethernet ดูที่ใหนก็มีครับ

โผล่มาก็เจอข้อความเตือนเลย เนื่องจากยังไม่ได้เสียบสายเข้ากับ MAU

ต่อมาลองเสียบสายเข้า MAU ซึ่งเป็นสายแลน UTP ธรรมดาๆนี่ล่ะครับ สำหรับคนที่ไม่คุ้นกับ token ring เจ้านี่ใช้สายได้ 2 แบบ คือ CAT3 เกรดสายโทรศัพท์สำหรับความเร็ว 4MBps และ CAT5 สำหรับความเร็ว 16MBps

ใช้เวลาพอสมควรเลยกว่าตัว MAU (CISCO 3920 Token Ring Switch) จะเอา station นี้เข้าสู่วง Ring ซึ่เทียบกับเสียบปุ๊ปติดปั๊ปของ Ethernet แล้วต่างกันมาก
แต่ก็ยังดีกว่าพวก Lan Switch พวกอื่นเช่น ATM Switch ซึ่งยากกว่ามาก

เนื่องจากเป็น LAN Protocol ตั้งแต่แรก เลยไม่ยุ่งยากในการจัดการเท่าไรครับ แต่เนื่องจากราคาเลยทำให้ไม่เป็นที่นิยมและตายไปในที่สุด น่าเสียดายมาก

โมดูลนี้ ราคาไม่แรงเท่าไร ใครมีโอกาศลองหามาเล่นดูนะครับ ใส่ WIC ได้ตั้งสองตัวแน่ะ แต่ก็ต้องหา token ring MAU มาใช้ด้วยครับ ราคาก็ไม่น่าแพงเท่าไรนะ
