Built by Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn, Prince of the ancient kingdom of Powys, who allied with King Edward I of England in the 13th century.
Later purchased by Sir Edward Herbert, younger son of William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke. This marked the beginning of the Herbert family’s long association with the castle, which continues to this day. They transformed Powis Castle from a border fortress into a noble residence.
The Herbert family still resides in parts of the castle today.
Famous for its gardens, described as “the most important” in Britain, and interiors regarded as “the most magnificent” in the country.
The terraced Baroque gardens are considered among the finest examples of Baroque gardens in the UK.
The castle and gardens are managed by the National Trust and are open to the public.
