This château has changed hands many times, but notably, in 1550, it was once owned by Catherine de’ Medici, Queen of France.
In 1559, after the death of her husband, King Henry II—who died from a jousting accident—Catherine assumed full power as regent for her sons. She wasted no time in removing the influence of Diane de Poitiers, Henry’s favorite mistress.
Diane, who was 20 years older than King Henry II, held tremendous influence over him. She received many gifts from the king, including the magnificent Château de Chenonceau, and had significant control over politics and the royal court—much to Queen Catherine's discontent.
After the king’s death, Catherine forced Diane to exchange the cherished Château de Chenonceau for Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, a smaller and more remote castle, far from the center of royal power.
However, Diane did not live at Chaumont-sur-Loire for the rest of her life. She eventually moved to her private estate, Château d’Anet, in Normandy, where she spent her remaining years in peace, though without political influence.
Over time, Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire changed ownership several more times. Finally, in 1938, it was either donated or sold to the French government and became public heritage.
Today, it is open to the public and serves as a venue for various festivals and events throughout the year, such as garden festivals and art exhibitions.
