• Number of Rooms: More than 40 rooms surrounding three courtyards, including the Great Hall and a large two-storey chapel. In addition, there are 55 kitchens, part of the Tudor kitchen complex.

Highlights of Hampton Court Palace:

• Built by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, later presented to King Henry VIII in 1529 after Wolsey’s fall from power.
• Today, the “owner” is King Charles III as the Crown, but the site is managed by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces.
• Several queens of King Henry VIII, including Anne Boleyn (2nd wife), resided at Hampton Court Palace. She stayed here especially during Henry VIII’s grand feasts, which showcased her as future queen before their marriage (1533), and during her pregnancy with Elizabeth I.
• Catherine of Aragon (1st wife) also lived here in the early years before her divorce.
• Jane Seymour (3rd wife) gave birth to Edward VI here in 1537 and died shortly afterward.
• Catherine Howard (5th wife) was arrested at Hampton Court on charges of adultery, in one of the palace’s most scandalous events. It is said that her screams and spirit still linger here, especially in the Haunted Gallery (the long corridor leading to the chapel) where she was seized after attempting to run and beg Henry VIII for mercy. Her fate was execution.
• ​​​​​​​After King Henry VIII’s death in 1547, Hampton Court Palace continued to serve as a royal residence for several subsequent monarchs.
