เรื่องมันเป็นมายังไง ถึงได้งานนี้
ต้นเดือน July 2005 ขอกู้เงินจาก OSAP ไปเรียน Oracle Internet Developer course ที่ University of Toronto เป็น Full Time Course ระยะเวลาเรียน 6 เดือน
ค่าเรียน 8,500 CND เนื่องจากมีลูก 3 คนจึงได้เงินช่วยเหลือฟรีต่างหากอีก 1,500 CND และให้เงินกู้เพิ่มต่างหากอีก 2,500 CND (รายละเอียดเยอะ เอาไว้จะเล่าให้ฟังวันหน้า)
ต้นเดือน November 2005 Co-op office ให้เราส่ง Resume ไปให้ เขาจะช่วยปรับปรุง Resume และส่ง Resume ให้เรา หากมีบริษัทติดต่อไป ซึ่งมีทั้งแบบ Co-op (ไม่ได้เงิน), Contract และ Permanant Job
ผมคิดว่าเป็นการดีไม่น้อยที่วงเล็บชื่อเล่นแบบฝรั่งไว้ข้างหลัง เพราะหลายคน Recognise ผม จำผมได้จากชื่อที่เรียกง่าย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นครูในห้องเรียน, เพื่อนร่วมห้องเรียน, เพื่อนร่วมห้องนอน (ผบ.ทบ.), Dental Office และ Recruiter ต่างๆ (Hi Jack กันเป็นแถบ)

Resume ที่เขาปรับแต่งให้ดูกระชับ และคมขึ้น ขนาดผมเองยังบอกตัวเองว่า นี่กูเหรอวะ resume นี้ทำให้มีการเรียก Interview บ่อยขึ้นอย่างเห็นได้ชัด (แต่ก็แห้วมาหลายที่มาก)
ผมไม่ส่งเฉพาะ Resume ... ครั้งนี้ลักษณะงานรวมทั้ง tool ที่ใช้ในการพัฒนา ตรงกับงานที่ผมทำอยู่ที่เมืองไทยกว่า 10 ปีถึง 90%
ผมส่ง portfolio (ตัวอย่าง screen ที่ผมออกแบบ, data flow, data flow diagram, คู่มือการใช้งานระบบ 2 หน้าแรกพอเป็น idea ที่แปลงจาก PowerPoint เป็น pdf) ไปด้วย เลือกเฉพาะที่ match กับงานที่สมัครเท่านั้น ผมรู้ว่าภาษาอังกฤษตัวเองไม่ดีนัก แต่ถ้าพูดเรื่อง technical skill งานที่เคยทำประกอบกับ Portfolio ก็แค่เปิด แล้วอธิบายตามนั้น
- มีการ e-mail มานัดว่าจะมี Telephone Interview ผม print เอกสารทุกอย่างเตรียมไว้ทันทีไม่ว่าจะเป็น Portfolio, Resume รวมทั้ง เบอร์โทรและเวลานัดหมาย (กลัวว่าถึงเวลา เสือกเข้า Internet ไม่ได้ จะซวย) ถึงเวลานัด
- ผ่าน telephone interview เขาถามว่าสะดวกมา interview ที่ Office เขาเมื่อไหร่ ผมหยิบปฎิทิน ที่วางไว้มาใกล้ๆ ตอบทันที น้อย (ผมพยายามนัดตอนเช้า ด้วยอยากให้ตัวเองเป็นคนแรกของวันนั้น)

I have been work with Oracle Database on Windows/Intel environment since I joined ABC Co.,Ltd. as only one IT staff in 1997. There were 7 stand alone PCs on that time. I designed networking environment, installed and supported Oracle Database 8i on Windows NT by working closely with freelance Oracle Database Administrator who held 1 year contract with us. I designed data flow diagram, relational database modeling by MS Visio and Erwin respectively. I developed programs by Oracle Developer 2000, Oracle Designer 6i, 9i and 10g (some programs for upcountry branches) on later time.
After database administrators contract end, I also held Computer System Analyst, Network and Database Administrator tasks, hired and supervised 4 programmers, responsibility to 4 COMPAQ/Intel servers with over 120 clients at head office and more than 30 clients for 3 branches. I kept developing programs as well as assisted developers with programming tactics, the creation of stored procedures, scripts, and utilities.

- ก่อนสัมภาษณ์ ผมเตรียมคำตอบที่คาดว่าน่าจะถามบ่อยๆ ถามแน่ เช่น Tell me about yourself? แต่ผมจะไม่ท่อง คืออยากให้เป็นธรรมชาติ เป็นตัวเองมากที่สุด
- ผมต้องไปถึงก่อนเวลาอย่างน้อยครึ่งชั่วโมงเสมอ ทุกครั้งจะต้องไป Taxi เพราะไม่อยากกังวลเรื่องเวลาเดินทาง (ผมจะเรียก Taxi ขาประจำ ประมาณว่า Warm up พูดคุยภาษาอังกฤษกับ Taxi ไประหว่างทาง และให้เขารอรับกลับเลย สุดจะเสียดายตังค์เหมือนกัน (ยืนทำงานตั้งหลายวันกว่าจะได้) บางครั้งค่า Taxi 100-160 CND ทิป 30-40 CND ทุกครั้ง) ครั้งนี้ผมไปก่อนเวลานัด 1 ชั่วโมง มีเวลาตั้งสติ โชคดีได้ไปรอในห้องสัมภาษณ์ก่อนคนเดียว (ตามแผน)
- ผมเอารายละเอียดบริษัทที่ print จาก website วางไว้ข้างตัว วาง portfolio เตรียมไว้ 5 ชุด, Resume 5 ชุด เรียงวางไว้ แบบ Overlap จะได้หยิบง่าย คนอื่นก็มองเห็น (ผมเคยถูกสัมภาษณ์จาก 5 คนพร้อมกัน) ถอดเสื้อกันหนาววางไว้หนังเก้าอี้แบบในหนัง ... ปรับเก้าอี้ให้สูงพอดีกับความสูงของเรา
- เลือกนั่งหันหน้าออกประตู (ส่วนใหญ่ประตูจะมีกระจก มองเห็นด้านนอก) เวลาคนสัมภาษณ์เราเข้ามา เขาจะได้นั่งหันหลังให้ประตู ไม่วอกแวก ไม่เห็นข้างนอก มีสมาธิฟังเราพูด
- ได้ผล ... คนที่ Interview ผม มี 3 คน ผมลุกขึ้นยืน ยื่นมือไปจับแบบ บีบมั่นคง ครั้งเดียวแล้วปล่อย (Shawn แฟนพี่โอภาสอนมา) Im Jack, I am very pleased to meet you (อันนี้พี่หมีสอนมา) มี 2 คนเดินมามือเปล่า ... ผมให้ Resume และ Portfolio ที่วางไว้ใต้รายละเอียดบริษัทที่ print จาก website แบบว่าเวลาหยิบ เขาจะได้เห็นว่าผมได้เตรียม print รายละเอียดบริษัทมาอ่านแล้ว ... ทุกคนนั่งหันหลังให้ประตู
- ระหว่างสัมภาษณ์ มีบางคนพูดค่อยมาก ผมสังเกตว่ามีคนนึง คอยช่วยผมตลอด ช่วยอธิบายคำถาม แถมบางที ช่วยตอบอีกต่างหาก (เพราะเขาอ่าน Resume และ Portfolio ที่ผมส่งให้ก่อนหน้าที่จะ Interview มาแล้วแน่ๆ) คนนี้ช่วยผมได้มาก เขารู้ว่าผมพูดไม่เก่ง แต่เขาชอบ portfolio ของผม เขาพูดหลายครั้งว่าดูที่การออกแบบสิ ว่าละเอียด ตั้งใจมาก แสดงว่าเป็นคนทำงานรอบคอบ attention to detail
- หลังจาก Interview ผมไม่ไปทำงานต่อ แต่รีบกลับบ้าน หรือแวะ Internet Café ทันที ครั้งนี้ผมเห็นเพื่อนร่วมห้องเรียนนั่งรอสัมภาษณ์ต่อจากผม
ผมไม่กลับบ้านทันที แต่ให้ Taxi ให้พา Internet Café ที่ใกล้ที่สุด ส่ง Thank you letter (ที่เตรียมไว้แล้ว) ทันที ประมาณบอกตัวเองว่า กูต้องส่งก่อนคนอื่น

Jxxx โทรมา 5 โมงครึ่งตอนเย็น คำถามแรกคือถามเรื่องเงินเดือนที่ผมอยากได้ ผมก็ตอบไป แต่ลงท้ายว่า Anyway, I will absolutely accept your standard rate
Jxxx บอกมาว่า Your salary is more than your expect, it is xx K / year หลังจากนั้นก็ถามว่าจะเริ่มงานได้เมื่อไหร่
หลังจากวางสายผมดีใจมาก โทรหาเจ้านายเก่าที่เมืองไทยทันที ลืมไปว่าตอนนั้นตี 5 ครึ่งที่เมืองไทย แกก็ดีใจหายรับโทรศัพท์ แถมไปทำงานแต่เช้า ส่ง mail ไปทั่วบริษัทว่าผมได้งานแล้ว
ผมโทรบอกแทบทุกคนที่อยู่ใน list โทรศัพท์ ทั้งที่เมืองไทย ที่ Canada คนที่ผมเคยส่งข่าวว่าผมหางานอยู่
วันแรก กับงาน Application developer
โชคดีที่มีเพื่อนร่วมห้องเรียน ได้งานที่เดียวกัน (เป็นผู้หญิง Philipino เธอพูดภาษาอังกฤษเป็นต่อยหอยเลย) ก็เลยมีเพื่อนคุย ไม่ค่อยขัดเขินเท่าไหร่
วันแรก ก็มีการแนะนำให้รู้จักคนอื่นใน Team (ประมาณ 12 คน) จากชาติต่างๆ หลายประเทศมาก แต่ละคนพูดอังกฤษไฟแลบเช่นกัน ที่นี่ทำงานเงียบมาก (มีคุยกันบ้างเบาๆ ถ้าจะ discuss เขาจะพากันเข้าห้องประชุม
จะมี Software ที่ track การทำงานของเราตลอด ตั้งแต่เริ่มเข้างาน ต้องลงเวลา start ใน Time Sheet (Software คล้ายๆ excel แต่ละเอียดกว่ามาก) หลังจาก sign in ด้วยชื่อและ password ของเรา ... ใน Time Sheet นี้ เราก็จะเห็น Work Order และรายละเอียด ที่ส่งมาจาก support team (ที่รับปัญหามาจากลูกค้า) หรือจาก Project Manager หรือจากคนที่มีปัญหากับ software หลังจากเราพัฒนาหรือแก้ไขเสร็จ ก็ต้องบันทึกรายละเอียดปัญหาที่พบ, วิธีแก้ไข หรือ script ที่เราเขียน update ลงใน time sheet ระบุว่าคนที่ต้องทำต่อจากเราคือ QA Team ซึ่ง Work Order นี้ก็จะไปแสดงในหน้า Time Sheet ของ QA ต่อไป หลังจากผ่าน QA แล้ว ก็จะส่งให้ support Team ซึ่งเป็น Front line ที่ Contact กับลูกค้าโดยตรง (ดังนั้นผมไม่มีหน้าที่คุยกับลูกค้า มีหน้าที่เขียน program อย่างเดียว)
ทุกวันศุกร์ จะมีการพากันออกไปกินอาหารนอกสถานที่ วันนี้เขาพากันไปกินที่ Swiss Chalet (เป็นการกินอาหารตามร้านแบบนี้ครั้งแรกของผมใน Canada) สั่งไม่เป็น ต้องบอกให้เพื่อนสั่งให้ (เอาเหมือนเพื่อนทุกอย่าง) ที่นี่ absolutely share คือ มา 10 กว่าคน ต่างคนต่างสั่ง แยกบิลชัดเจน เวลาจ่ายเงินเลยดูวุ่นวายแปลกๆ
คนไปกินอาหารที่ร้านนี้เยอะ เลยใช้เวลารออาหารนานหน่อย แต่ผมก็นั่งยิ้มคนเดียว นึกภาพตัวเองอยู่ในครัว กับ list สั่งอาหารยาวเป็นตับ คนในครัวทุกคนมือเป็นลิงไม่ได้หยุดมือ คุยกับเพื่อน Philipino ก็คิดคล้ายกัน เพราะเธอก็เคยทำงานอยู่ Tim Horton เหมือนกัน เธอบอกนึกภาพเธอถามลูกค้า Double Double ? ตอนยุ่งๆ ได้เลย
วันที่ 10 ธันวาคม จะมี Charismas party ที่ร้าน (จำชื่อไม่ได้) เป็น charismas party แรกของผมใน Canada เหมือนกัน
หลายคนอาจสงสัยว่ารายได้ดีไหม ... ผมลองคำนวณดูแล้วว่า หลังจากหักภาษี, เงินช่วยเหลือบุตร (child tax benefit) และ child care subsidy แล้ว net income ก็พอๆ กับที่ผมเคยทำงาน 2 jobs ที่ร้านอาหารไทยกับ ร้านอาหารฝรั่ง (เพราะที่ร้านอาหารไทยผมรับเงินสด ไม่เข้า payroll) หรืออาจน้อยกว่า waiter บางคนที่รับ tip เป็นเงินสด
ผมเพิ่งเข้าใจเดี๋ยวนี้เองว่าระบบภาษี และการช่วยเหลือจากภาครัฐ ที่นี่ ทำให้มีชนชั้นกลางเยอะ ไม่ต้องดิ้นรนเดือดร้อนมาก พออยู่พอกิน เข้าถึงสาธารณูปโภคต่างๆ ได้เท่าเทียมกัน อย่างไม่ลำบากมากนัก
แต่ที่ต่างกันคือ ผมได้ทำงาน 8.30 17.00 จันทร์ ศุกร์ ... ทำงานนั่งโต๊ะกับ computer ประสิทธิภาพสูง จอขนาด 19 นิ้ว (ไม่เหนื่อยกาย แต่เหนื่อยสมองแทน) ... 1 ปีที่ผ่านมาผมทำงานวันละ 12-15 ชั่วโมงแบบกลับบ้านเมื่อยแขน เมื่อยขา ปวดหลังไปหมด มีโอกาสไปร้องคาราโอเกะ 2-3 ครั้ง / ปี (ไม่เหมีอนอยู่เมืองไทย ได้ร้องคาราโอเกะ 2-3 วัน / อาทิตย์)
