BaZ: Roger, how is it going after two weeks of playing in the dust and clay?
Im used to it now. The clay does get in my eyes for sure. The socks become very red. Its better on grass or hard court where these things dont happen.
2: What was the first thought that you had at match point in Paris?
It was something simple. I created this.
It was one of the most important victories of my career.
It was a weight that was lifted.
Certainly the first Wimbledon victory will remain always special,
it gave me all that I have. It made me popular,
gave me the self-confidence, was the realization of my childhood dream.
All my idols did not win in Paris. Therefore Roland Garros is different. But this first win is immense.
(Deep stuff, right? I created this. Wow.)
3: Have you ever thought of money during a match?
Once. In Shanghai, in the first Masters
when I had qualified before the last group game for the semi finals.
The win against Johansson was no longer important,
but there was 150,000 francs for the victory!
I thought almost in every rally: 150,000 francs! 150,000 francs!
What can I buy? Everything!
It was hell to think of the money in every shot. . .
4: Are you ever ashamed of your tears?
No, not ashamed. It was perhaps a little embarrassing.
The camera likes to focus closely on the tears.
It is good to show emotions. I am actually happy that I do.
5. What would you want to have to be the perfect tennis player without Roger Federer?
Serve, I take Andy Roddick, in addition David Nalbandians backhand,
Rafael Nadals forehand and Lleyton Hewitts fighter qualities.
There is no longer so many volleys today,
but I would say Stefan Edberg, Patrick Rafter or Tim Henman.
And in the mental area, I take probably once again Nadal.
This doesnt guarantee success, but it would be a very difficult to play against this opponent.
6: Who is indispensable to you as a tennis player?
I could actually make it all alone.
But not so professionally and certainly not so well.
The longest person Ive collaborated with is Pierre Paganini;
he was certainly a very important man in my early career.
7: How do you spend a perfect day?
Without tennis: Either with friends, home or with Mirka at the beach, on the Maldives.
Romantic dinner maybe. Maybe to the spa, massages watch the sunset and enjoy the waves.

8: With whom except your woman would you gladly get stuck in the elevator?
Then probably with my mommy.
(Supposedly he really did say mommy.)
9: Who are your best friends?
Reto Staubli was my best man. Then there is Yves Allegro,
Marco Chiudinelli, also Severin Lüthi.-

10: Your favorite food?
I could eat Italian every day. I also like Japanese.
And somehow my number 1 is always the Swiss food:
Rösti, raclette, fondue if Im at home.
11: What do you not like?
I was a vegetarian until I was 16.
Then I went into a steakhouse during the 1998 Davis Cup with Marc Rosset.
When I said that I eat no meat, he was surprised!
He ordered me a small piece of every kind of meat out of the kitchen.
I tried, some suited me and so began that.
With Mirka on vacation in Thailand I discovered seafood and fish
and today I actually eat everything.
As a vegetarian, I experienced hard times at junior tournaments.

12: What do you do when you first wake up?
I snuggle with Mirka.
That comes before I get out of bed.
Then I go shower, brush my teeth and shave.

13: Your biggest flaw?
I used to always be late.
Its better today.
And sometimes I delay things that I could decide immediately. (Much better than the standard Im a perfectionist answer.)
14: What do you not like?
People who are impolite.
15. Are there still people who are impolite to Roger Federer?
When was the last time someone yelled at you?
When I was playing exhibition-matches with Sampras in Asia, (ปี 2007)
we were invited by the Prime-minister of Malaysia.
The man who had arranged this told us it would take half an hour after two hours it was time for us to go.
The dinner was still being served, and I called the person in charge,
in order to complain about the fact that he had made us deal with this unpleasant situation.
At that point I was very angry.
He didnt like it and he yelled back at me. This wasnt good.
16. What is the dumbest advice you have received during your career?
There have been whole match-analysis attempts, like vs. Nadal,
in which every single stroke was mentioned.
Then there are people who make phone calls all the time,
who write to me, asking why I dont write back,
saying I am impolite. But Im not sore at anyone, its ok by me.
17. What are you afraid of?
Sky diving, bungee jumping, I dont need these things.
I cant do those things. Since Im pretty much a yellow-belly.
18. It is said that 99% of people know who Roger Federer is.
Do you ever meet the remaining 1% ? (Really!? Maybe 99% of people in Switzerland whered this stat come from?)
Yes, that happens.
People who are not at all interested in sports,
and people who dont know that Switzerland exists.
I dont expect everyone to know who I am.
Thats not what I think of in life. Otherwise, it wouldnt be good.
19. When was the last time someone called you Roschée (French pronunciation) instead of Rodscher (English pronunciation)?
In Paris this has happened 100,000 times.
But now it happens rarely, I have instructed people well in the previous years,
to make sure they will call me Rodscher (Roger),
because I was baptized this way and I live up to my South African origins from my mothers side with pride.
But I think its funny when the French write Rodgeur in order to read it in the right way.
20. Who does someone so admired admire?
Other sportsmen. Golfer Tiger Woods, he is an inspiration to me.
Previously also basketball player Michael Jordan.
And motorcycle driver Valentino Rossi, who I watch when I can.
But also musicians, like former Bush singer
(Gavin Rossdale shout out!), who is a friend
and I have attended two concerts of his.
21. What will you be doing in 20 years?
I will be looking after my family of course.
But I also see myself still working, not just sitting around,
although I dont think my work will have to do with tennis.
Today I cant imagine myself as a coach, or as a TV-expert.
I rather see myself associated with some sponsors or running my own business, if it exists.

22. You will be a father after Wimbledon.

No, we havent. But friends have given us a ton of books on this subject,
and I have read a little.
But the most important thing for me is to exchange thoughts with other people who have already had this experience.
And the doctor also gives you much information.

We have searched in name books, but we havent decided yet.

I have never confirmed this. We know what it is and will not say.

Do you also feel like that?
It is definitely a very interesting period of time.
It is incredible, how much Ive found out about
but also about women and what happens to them.
That was very educational for me. (Ha!)
26. Is the fact that youll become a father only associated with anticipation or with worries as well?
One has a lot of worries as well.
It begins in the first few months, during which one must wait before announcing it,
until the doctors say what could go wrong.
But Im happy for the responsibility that comes with it.
And tennis helps me.
I have come through so many difficult situations,
that I just have the feeling that we will be good parents.
27. Have you and Mirka got nicknames for each other?
Yes, we have many (nick)names.
But Id rather not mention them. . .
(Oh, how my mind reels! Feddy Bear, maybe?)
28. Disposable or cloth diapers?
Disposable diapers.
We dont know anything else, although they are not environmentally friendly.
But I do make sure that I recycle everything.
29. Two children or extended family?
Three children, maybe four.
Just more than just one.
But for the time being we are looking forward to this birth.
One named after each Slam, of course! -

Definitely bicycle, I have done the other twice.
Last time (I rode a bicycle) was after winning at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors,

I like watching Raabs broadcasts.
Abroad it is hardly possible most of the time.

Honey bread, but when abroad I must switch to cornflakes most of the time.
35. When you are at home: rather go out, or cook for yourself?
I like to eat at home. Mirka likes cooking, unlike me.
I dont know how I did it, but I have been lucky
because in my life there always have been good cooks around me: first my mother, now Mirka.

Actually, rather rock.
Especially during training at home, I hear hard stuff most of the time, Metallica or AC / DC.
38. Wet shaving or electric?
Only wet shaving.
According to my contract with Gillette, I must be well-groomed.
Since I shave every day, I have less skin problems.
At tournaments, I am supplied with razors and blades.
39. Olympic Games Single Gold or Davis Cup?
Davis Cup, because I have already won Olympic Gold in doubles.
40. What surprises me about Rafael Nadal is:
His consistency in his early years.
41. Training is for me:
More fun than it used to be.
42. My weakest stroke is:
The backhand return
And then I would like to be able to play more aggressively.
43. My dream double-partner is:
Martina Hingis. I have already played with her,
it was really fantastic.
And with Mirka.
After my Olympic Games victory, of course,

10 important things to know about Wimbledon 2009

1. Some important dates to remember:
Monday 15 June Wimbledon Qualifying begins
Thursday 18 June Wimbledon Qualifying finishes

Monday 22 June Wimbledon begins

Sunday 28 June No play scheduled

2. The roof over Centre Court
Should it rain this year it will take about seven minutes for the roof to close
but 30 minutes before play can resume.
The roof is made of a lightweight material called Tenara
that is stretched over the court's opening by 10 trusses
and is 16m above the court surface.
The decision to close the roof is made by tournament referee Andrew Jarrett.
3. Tennis ball numbers
If you were to fill Centre Court with tennis balls while the roof is closed you would need 290 million.
4. New Court No2
Built at the southern end of the grounds, the new Court 2 can hold 4000 spectators.
It was built 3.5m below ground level so it wouldn't obstruct the views across the ground.
5. New court names
Because of the new Court 2 all the courts have been re-numbered.
The southern courts have been re-numbered in sequence so the old Court 2 becomes Court 3 up to Court12.
There is no Court 13 unlucky for some.
6. Blogs
This year Wimbledon.org is adding more blogs to our match report and feature coverage.
Topping the bill will be a blog from writer and comedian Tony Hawks,
who once travelled round Ireland with a fridge and played the Moldovan football team at tennis.
The other blogs with cover comment & analysis, fashion and junior Wimbledon
while the popular As it happens live blog will return.

Wimbledon is making an extra effort with its social media this year
because we want to bring Wimbledon fans together from all over the world.

10. Fred Perry at the museum
There is a new exhibition at the Wimbledon Museum celebrating the Centenary of Fred Perry's birth.
The exhibition looks at his life and legacy, and includes his World table tennis trophy
as well as pieces commemorating his three successive Wimbledon wins in the 1930s.
There is also footage of Perry in action and photos of his life with the stars in Hollywood.

มีคำตอบของเฟดอยู่คำตอบนึงที่ตอบนักข่าวแบบได้ใจนุชมากเลย
เหมือนเฟดยิงมุขให้คนขำนะ แต่คนอ่านประเภทคิดมาคิดเล็กคิดน้อยอย่างนุช
อดนึกไม่ได้ว่า ...... ตอบแบบนี้ก็ดีเหมือนกัน

Federer is light on his feet, blessed with remarkable feel,
and he possesses stores of stamina and determination
that are concealed rather than advertised.
Nobody looks at him and thinks "next generation," or "specimen."
Guys who play, look, and even talk like Federer aren't supposed to have a shot in this game anymore,
and the fact that they do
(or that he does, proving that at least in theory the possibility exists)
is one of the things that makes tennis worth watching and following.
The game was supposed to leave his kind behind,
yet here is Federer, not only stubbornly clinging to existence,
but actually outlasting and proving himself more durable than the specimens.
Does he think about these things? Hardly.

Both as a player and personality, Federer embodies this wonderful Italian word, sprezzatura.
It's a difficult word to translate,
but the Canadian philosopher Mark Kingwell wrote about it
compellingly in an utterly delightful book, Catch and Release.
Fundamentally, sprezzatura is the ability to make difficult things look easy.
It's simply astonishing to me that in this day and age in tennis,
a player who so conspicuously embodies this notion of sprezzatura
can be the leading player of his generation.
Federer is no less an iconic figure in his sport than is NFL quarterback Brett Favre in football.
Favre holds that position because he seems the archetypal football player,
but Federer earns his distinction while being absolutely atypical.
He frequently seems to think, act, and express sentiments
nothing like those of a host of iconic tennis players
whose qualities were often trumpeted as germane to their station:
the bullishness of Vilas, the toughness of Ivan Lendl,
the fire of a John McEnroe, the explosive power of a Pete Sampras,
that subtle communication of menace
that informed the glowering visage of Pancho Gonzalez,
or the scary, almost rodent-like bloodlust of Jimmy Connors.
But all of pale alongside the easy,
it's-no-big-deal domination with which Federer rules.

Sprezzatura

The events of the past month in the lives of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal remind me of really well-executed novels or films.
One plot twist has been heaped on another, sometimes in really inventive ways (Robin Soderling, beat Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros? Hahahahah!),
but while these sharp turnabouts are surprisingly - sometimes jaw-droppingly so -
all of them can be explained and none of them strains credulity.
Looking back on them, you're inclined to think, Well, that kind of does make sense. . . or, Geez, I shoulda seen that coming!
Roger Federer storming back to beat Nadal to Madrid?
Why not - it was on a fast clay-court and at altitude! Rafael Nadal losing at the French Open?
Hail, did you think he was going to go undefeated, for life?
Robin Soderling (as opposed to David Ferrer or Fernando Gonzalez) taking out Nadal in the fourth round?
Sounds crazy, but that selfsame guy got to the final despite having the toughest draw in Paris.
Federer winning Roland Garros this year?
What, did you think a guy who's been in the last three finals running didn't have a shot. . . And so on.
The only thing that was not really surprising, at least in hindsight,
was the surgical precision with which Federer defused the stick of dynamite that is Soderling.
And he accomplished that with the kind of shrewd, workmanlike, no-frills strategy
and execution that underscored a reality that Federer critics forget, and forget again:
Despite all that elegance and artistry, despite the cardigans, hair-care products,
runway gawking and man purses, there's plenty of junkyard dog in this guy.
He knows where the bone is buried and when he's hellbent on digging it up,
it takes more than most people have to stop him.
It apparently takes more than any tennis player has, at any rate, and that's his main area of concern.
Sp it was that before playing last Sunday's historic Roland Garros final,
Federer got hold of DVD recordings of the last two matches
he'd played against Soderling, one in the recent Madrid Masters and the other in last autumn's Paris Masters
(wonder how he acquired them so quickly; I can't imagine
Netflix has a huge stock of those early-round straight-setters).
On Saturday, Federer studied the videos,
thought about what he's surmised from watching Soderling progress so far in Paris,
and then he retired to join his wife for a quiet dinner enjoyed in splendid isolation.
About 24 hours later, newly crowned as the champion of Roland Garros,
Federer revealed what he'd learned on Saturday:
"I saw that he (Soderling) won against guys who were playing very far from (behind) the baseline.
So this gave him time to organize and he used his big shots. . .
I knew that there would be rallies when we played,
and it was important for me to be close to him,
to play hard against him, and use the advantages I have on clay. . .
I had the feeling that the other opponents let him play too much.
This is what I tried not to let him do."
This explanation may surprise those who rather thought that
Federer had spent Saturday night nibblling on sashimi with Anna Wintour
and the usual gaggle of fashion-industry courtesans,
then went out and demolished a finalist desperate to keep punching above his weight.
Let's face it, one of the things that makes Federer a somewhat polarizing figure,
so attractive to some - but also so off-putting to others -
is that he rarely allows us to get a glimpse of the junkyard dog.
He leaves that territory to Nadal, and in this way the two men split the world.
If you need to put labels on it, let's say
it's Naturalists (Nadal's fans) versus Federer's Romantics.
I've been thinking about this aspect of Federer quite a bit,
because of all the amazing things you could point out about this guy,
the one that keeps striking me, over and over, as unusual to the point of almost being improbable is
how utterly unconnected he seems from the way tennis has evolved in the past few years,
and from its ruling conventions and stereotypes.
One of the reasons Nadal is so popular with youngsters is
that he unconsciously sends the message that he is very of the moment,
very now - that he's some sort of evolutionary step forward,
something tennis has not seen before
and for which it has no answer.
Nadal literally begs you to make all those arguments
about how this isn't your father's game of tennis anymore,
about how somehow tennis has gone to a mythical "next level"
which may not exist and maybe never did -
at least not in so conspicuous, quickly attained way.
By contrast, I can't lay eyes on Federer these days
without thinking I'm watching some grainy,
16mm film of just the kind of guy the new millennium game has supposedly left behind
- the kind of guy about whom we say,
Oh, he was a great player in his time,
but he'd never last with the way the game has changed today!
Close your eyes, can't you hear the projector click-clacking,
and see that blurry image jumping around on the window-shade like drop-down white screen?
