คำว่า แคลคูลัส มาจากคำละตินคำว่า กรวด (pebble) ซึ่งเกี่ยวกับคณิตศาสตร์เพราะในยุคแรกๆ นักคณิตศาสตร์ชาวกรีกเมื่อประมาณ 600 ปีก่อนคริสตกาล ใช้กรวดช่วยคำนวณทางเลขคณิต ทุกวันนี้คำว่า แคลคูลัสหมายถึงกระบวนการหรือเซตของกระบวนการ เช่นการหารในเลขคณิต หรือการแก้สมการกำลังสองในพีชคณิต อย่างไรก็ตามคำนี้มักใช้บ่อยๆในความหมายถึงทฤษฎีและกระบวนการที่เราศึกษาอนุพันธ์และปริพันธ์แคลคูลัส ปกติเราจึงใช้คำว่า the calculus เพื่อเจาะจงถึงอนุพันธ์และปริพันธ์แคลคูลัส เพื่อแสดงถึงความแตกต่างจากแคลคูลัสอื่นอื่นๆ (other calculi)
