Ponyo on a Cliff By the Sea or Gake no Ue no Ponyo (崖の上のポニョ) (July 19, 2008) is the second Studio Ghibli film to feature a watercolor, handpainted look, after the previous Ghibli film My Neighbors the Yamadas.
I Started writing about this film on Jan 2008... Back then, there's nothing we knew, but it's the film about a goldfish princess named Ponyo who wants to become human and her relationship with a 5-year-old boy, Sosuke who based on Hayao's son Goro Miyazaki when he was five and some criticism about too early film announcement and promotion.
Now, the film was released in Japan, will be released in UK next year (but I don't know for US). Anyway, let's talk about the story
Ponyo is a girl fish who runs away from her home in the sea. She ends up stranded on the shore and is rescued by Sosuke, who lives on a cliff. He named her and promises to protect her forever. Meanwhile, her father, Fujimoto, is looking for his daughter. He calls his wave demons and has them take Ponyo back to him, that makes Sosuke is heartbroken.
Ponyo has started to fall in love with Sosuke and want to become human, definitely, Her father silences her. By helping her sister breaks away from her father's barriers, Ponyo mixes herself in with his magic, becoming a human girl. This causes an inbalance in the world, which in turn results in a tsunami. She rides on the waves of the tsunami, and goes back to visit Sosuke. But when they wake up in the morning, they find the most of the land has submerged. Risa, Sosuke's mother, has not come home yet. Ponyo turns Sosuke's toy boat to life size and set out to find Risa. However, Ponyo loses her human form and returns to a fish after going through a tunnel. They arrive to the nursing home and meet Granmammare, Ponyo's mother, who declares that if Sosuke and Ponyo succeed a trial, Ponyo can live as a human, and the world order will be restored.
