Everyone's a critic
Will the profusion of film blogs in Thailand open up a new vista of cinematic appreciation here?

Like self-multiplying amoeba, Internet weblogs, or blogs, have taken up zillions of gigabytes of the global digital sphere. As online diaries and free canvases for sharing thoughts, opinions, stories, lies, family logs, political harangues, lovesick poetry, right-wing lectures, left-wing apologetics, heartbreaking laments, art commentaries and conspiracy theories, a large number of blogs are written by movie fanatics who practise the principle of "everyone's a critic" to the extreme.
Blogs are, in short, personal magazines that are open for all to view, and movie fans around the world, Thailand included, have utilised this open arena to reflect and record their feelings and thoughts about films. If writing about movies serves, in a way, to expand the meaning of cinema, either by stretching it towards the abstract or interpreting it down to a tangible level, bloggers and their blogs are becoming a force that will play a huge part in shaping this generation's understanding of movies.
Or are they?
Blogs are a manifestation of both democracy and anarchy: It's free, it's open, so everyone jumps in and clutters it. No one has ever really counted, but it's safe to assume that there are at least a few hundred, if not a thousand, Thai blogs dedicated to discussing movies. A substantial portion of these, not surprisingly, are the personal entries of casual movie fans who simply want to amuse themselves and their friends, and thus their blogs may not contribute to the serious critical environment - frankly, plenty of them are a waste of time even to browse through. But among the surfeit, there are also a number of bloggers, most of them in their twenties, who treat their writing with the integrity of a professional. Some of them are considered "famous" by regular readers in the online community, and some of their essays on cinema are endowed with sharp analytical skills that probably surpass those by writers in traditional media, like movie magazines and newspapers.
Most movie bloggers say the same thing: Writing blogs means complete freedom, and they take pleasure from it. "I can write the way I want, at the length I want, whenever I want, and use strong words that I believe are most fit to describe the movie," says full-time Phang-nga pharmacist and popular blogger Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa, aka "Filmsick". "I can propose anti-mainstream ideas that some magazines may not find suitable to print in full. In blogs they're ok."
"Nobody has come after blogs to police them - or not just yet," says Kanchat Rangseekansong, 21, an economics student at Thammasat whose blog name is "merveillesxx". "Beside, I need to be in the right mood to be able to write, and no magazine would want to wait for me. So a blog is perfect."
In American newspapers, critics pull no punches in slagging off a movie they deem dishonourable. But such practice is non-existent in Thai publications, especially in articles about Thai movies and Thai directors. The kreng jai effect remains the invisible straightjacket, and hardly any movie reviewers use harsh words (though printable) in their published writing for risk of being branded impolite. It's been understood that public criticism, especially on something perceived as trivial as movies, is not in the "Thai nature". Gossipping, or criticism in private, is of course another story.
Thus blogs, with their real yet intangible digital existence, have become a middle ground that allows writers to groom their critical faculty (it's common, too, to find that political bloggers are more feisty and in-your-face than newspaper columnists). But these bloggers are nevertheless aware that writing whatever they want without an editor to comment on their work means they're prone to errors or even naievete. Blogging may resemble an offshoot of guerilla journalism, and its obscure status seems to work both for and against bloggers.
"May I ask you not to reveal my real name," a movie blogger nicknamed "Khon Mong Nang" asked us in an email. "I believe that one unique feature of Internet discussion is the anonymity of writers. I understand that withholding my name means I'm not prepared to show my due responsibility for what I write, but I believe that to reveal myself will put pressure on me and my creative freedom. If the readers appreciate what I write, I think my real name contains no real importance."
Freedom vs too much freedom is a dilemma faced by bloggers. Yet for readers and the community of online film enthusiasts, the profusion of thoughtful blogs, to an extent, opens up a new vista of film appreciation. Most movie blogs are written by people whose day jobs have nothing to do with movies, and their disparate views provide alternatives to how we can choose to perceive a film.
Though declining to disclose his real name, Khon Mong Nang (meaning "a person who sees movies") did inform us that he graduated from Thammasat's faculty of political science. His film criticism is thus loaded with references to the current political temperature and the history of Thai politics. "I look at movies through a certain set of theories in an attempt to explore the dimensions between political powers and entertainment media, whether in films, television or music - I'm looking at what you may term 'cultural politics' hidden in the contemporary Thai pop scene," he writes in his email.
In his writing on The Legend of King Naresuan I, Khon Mong Nang links the theme of nationalism with the recent speech of Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin when he lambasted Singapore. When he dissects the Thai action film Khon Fire Bin, the blogger, who's now studying for his master's at Thammasat, discusses at length the history of foreign intervention in Siam, which he believes to be a crucial subtext of that film.
Another hit movie blog is kept by a man who calls himself "Pom Yu Khang Lang Khun", meaning "I am behind you". His real name is Peerapol Patranutaporn, a psychologist at Rama Hospital, and true to his chosen profession his reviews are characterised by psychological inquiries into characters' motives and their moral compasses. "I have a notebook with me, and I make notes on the films I see when I'm free from my work," says Peerapol, 29. "My pieces are not very much concerned with the background of the director or information about the actors, but I try to guide my readers to understand the characters better."
For example, in his review of Blood Diamond, which deals with the illegal diamond trade and civil wars in Africa, Peerapol launches a friendly yet scholastic discourse on the nature of the mind and discusses the behaviour of the lead character (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). "Can we judge a person because of his behaviour?" he asks in his blog. "To understand the essence of the human mind we cannot ignore social influences and family upbringing."
To assess the influence of blogs is to resume the debate on the rise of digital media and its impact on the future of traditional, paper-based media. More respected and reliable, magazines and newspapers may still enjoy the status as the official point of references in cinema journalism, but blogs are sometimes the place where new, fresh, giddy, crazy ideas pop up first, especially in a country where paper-based media haven't become an institution and are more subject to commercial concerns. Only one or two Thai newspapers have serious film critics in residence where they're permitted certain space for their columns.
But papers remain the ultimate allure for all writers. Movie bloggers themselves, while enjoying the supreme freedom to expound their ideas without worrying about editorial sanction, embrace the chance to cross-over into the old format. Peerapol the psychologist has published a collection of his work - in a pocketbook format. Meanwhile Kanchat, or "merveillesxx" the economics student, will launch a pocketbook which compiles his film reviews in April.
"A book is tangible, it's for keeps, though it risks being eaten by bugs," laughs Kanchat. "But to be frank, I think people these days read books less and less, and they spend more and more time in front of computer screens. I'll have a book out, but I'll still keep my blog."
"To have an editor means you have a chance to improve," says Peerapol. "When the publisher asked me to compile my musings, I had to go back and rewrite most of what I wrote and created a clear theme for the whole collection.
"Still, what I like most about a blog is that it opens a two-way communication," he adds. "My readers can always send in their comments - which is not possible for a magazine - and through those comments I can also improve the quality of my work."
Most people agree, though, that despite the recent epidemic of movie blogs, it'd be hard to imagine the day when movie magazines and printed review columns become obsolete. "I don't think blogging can actually change the structure of the critical society in Thailand," says Khon Mong Nang. "There are a lot of blogs these days, but they're not that many, and readers still rely more on paper-based media. Internet access is still a luxury to a lot of people, and the majority of movie-goers are readers of newspapers and magazines, not blogs."
The ever-serious Khon Mong Nang gives us a closing sentence: "However, the glaring weakness of traditional media was witnessed right after the Sept 19 coup, when newspapers suddenly lost their fangs in criticising the military's moves. But blogs and webboards became a fertile ground for denouncing the coup... Blogs are a new stronghold of people who have different views."
On movies, that is, and apparently on other topics too.

1. Masami Nagasawa ในชุดว่ายน้ำ (ใครกรุณา capture ให้จะเป็นพระคุณอย่างยิ่ง)
2. Mokomichi Hayami (พระเอก) - นั่งนึกตั้งนานว่าตานี่คือใคร เพราะคุ้นหน้ามากๆ ไปค้นข้อมูลดูปรากฏว่าเค้าคือน้องชายคนกลางในซีรี่ย์ Brother Beat (สามหนุ่มใสหัวใจเดียวกัน) นี่เอง
3. ฉากที่เพื่อนพระเอกโดดน้ำ - อินกับฉากนี้มาก
ส่วนอื่นๆ ของหนังก็ไม่มีอะไร จะเผลอหลับไปบ้างก็ได้ ไม่มีผลอะไรนักหรอก

แน่นอนว่าตอนนี้หนังของเจี่ยจางเคอะน่าสนใจกว่าเยอะ (รุ่น 5 ตายเรียบไปหมดแล้ว) แต่ก็ยังชอบหนัง เพราะไหนๆ จางอี้โหมวก็เป็นบ้าไปแล้ว มันก็ต้องบ้าสุดๆ แบบนี้แหละ
ชอบ Curse มากกว่า The Promise (คนบ้าบิน) และ The Banquet แต่ชอบน้อยกว่า Hero และ House of Flying Daggers
กงลี่ เจ้าแม่กว่า จางจืออี๋ สามร้อยเท่า (โฆษณากานิเยร์ยืนยันว่าน้องจางยังเหมาะกับอะไรใสๆ อยู่น่า)
ตอนจบมี symbolic มากมาย จะลองดูเล่นๆ ก็สนุกดี (ชอบที่หนังเล่นกับสี จากสีทอง เป็น "สีเลือด")
อนึ่ง หนังควรมีชื่อไทยว่า "คำสาปนมทอง" (เป็นหนังที่นมทิ่มหน้าสองชั่วโมงเต็ม - ไม่รู้สึกมีความสุขอย่างใด)

ก็ตามเคย GTH ถนัดการทำหนัง candy แบบนี้ เห็นได้ชัดว่าหนังไม่ได้ต้องการทำให้ตัวเองเป็นหนังสะท้อนสังคมแต่ประการใด แต่เลือกจะเป็นหนัง feel-good, nostalgia เรื่องนึง (อนึ่ง ได้ยินมาว่านี่เป้นฉบับ GTH Cut ส่วน Director's cut ฉายในบางกอกฟิล์ม)
แม้หนังจะไม่ได้เจาะลึกโจทย์ที่ว่าเด็กๆ รู้สึกอย่างไรกับการเอนทรานซ์ แต่ก็ชอบคววามรู้สึกที่ดูลอยๆ ตรงนี้เหมือนกัน เพราะ ณ เวลานั้น ช่วงนั้น ไม่มีเด็กคนไหนตอบคำถามแบบนี้ได้ นอกจากความสับสนตรงนี้แล้ว ยังชอบความเจ็บปวดของเด็กๆ ที่แฝงอยู่จางๆ ในหนังด้วย ไม่ว่าจะด้วยเสียหน้า น้ำเสียง หรืออะไรก็ได้ เชื่อมั่นอย่างนึงว่า หนังเรื่องนี้จะ fake อะไรก็ได้ แต่ fake เรื่อง "บาดแผลของวัยรุ่น" ไม่ได้ ถึงจะซ่อนไว้ มันก็รู้สึก (อันนี้เป้นความรู้สึกของจขบ.เอง)
ชอบหนังเรื่องนี้โดยความรู้สึกส่วนตัวล้วนๆ รู้สึกว่า gap ของตัวเองไม่ได้ห่างจากเด็กๆ ในเรื่องมากนัก รู้สึกอินไปเกือบทุกอย่างในหนังเรื่องนี้ (แอฟฟลายฟิสิกส์, งานแฟตเฟส ไปจนถึง เขาชนไก่) และสิ่งหนึ่งที่อาจจะเป็นโชคดีของหนังก็คือ หนังเลือกเพลงได้โดนใจตัวเองมากๆ (พรู, โมเดิร์นด็อก, buhddist holiday)
อนึ่ง กรุณาหลีกเลี่ยงการชมหนังเรื่องนี้ในรอบที่มีเด็กสวนกุหลาบ (ทำได้ด้วยหรือ??)
