Riquelme Announces Retirement From Argentina

 Villarreal supremo Juan Román Riquelme announced his retirement from international football Wednesday night for family reasons.
"Since the World Cup, my mother has been taken to hospital twice and my responsibility is to take care of her," said Riquelme, who said he would miss donning the famous Argentina jersey.
Riquelme's 2006 World Cup performance and his recent showing against Brazil in a friendly brought up questions as to his condition and his viability as Argentina's conductor, as people said that he tended to slow down much to the detriment of players with the pace of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, and Javier Saviola.
Riquelme became the shining star of a generation of players coached by José Pekerman, when the Albiceleste won the South American U-20 and also the FIFA World U-20 titles back in 1997. His debut with the big team came on November 16th, 1997 against Colombia at La Bombonera when the national team was coached by Daniel Passarella.
Prior to the World Cup in 2002, Argentina manager Marcelo Bielsa gave the nod to Juan Sebastián Verón, who became the scapegoat for the team's early exit from the competition. This led to a national outcry to have a player like Riquelme on the pitch over Veron.
Riquelme, 28, earned 37 caps for the national team and scored eight goals in the process. At Boca Juniors, the playmaking midfielder is an idol for his play in the 2000 and 2001 Copa Libertadores titles. From there he went to Barcelona, where he was immediately out of favor with coach Louis Van Gaal. During this time his adaptation to the European game was being criticized as he was looked at as too slow. It was not long before Riquelme was shipped out in favor some Brazilian player from Paris-St. Germain that happened to be grabbing headlines worldwide.
Eventually arriving at Villarreal, Riquelme's stock simply skyrocketed and made him one of the hottest starts in the world game. He helped lead the Yellow Submarine to the semifinals of the Champions League last season, but his missed penalty kick against Arsenal in the semifinals seemed to be the foreshadowing of things to come.
His downfall came in the most recent World Cup, as his performance left much to be desired out of an Argentina squad that came out of the gates flying, but which went home kicking and screaming. Doubts surfaced about Riquelme's leadership and his style of play, as many individuals compared it to a "sports car driving with its emergency brake on."
Riquelme was also criticized harshly for not fulfilling his role in the appropriate manner, practically the same criticisms that Verón received just four years earlier. What a difference four years can make. The Brazil match in London earlier this month was just the final nail in the coffin.
A departure of this magnitude could leave the door wide open finally for Zaragoza's Pablo Aimar to get his chance after being shunned on various occasions; or possibly Lionel Messi, who deputized in Riquelme's spot on the pitch a few times prior to the World Cup.
Hopefully Riquelme's karma does not extend over to his successors.

"For the first time in my life, I feel a lot of sympathy for Sebastián Verón. Until today I used to hate him for constantly picking fights with Sorín during Villarreal-Inter and bitching about not being picked for the NT. But now I understand his bitterness entirely. I am even inclined to like him. Why?
Seba Verón was unquestionably one of the greatest Argentinian players in the post-Maradona era. In fact, along with Riquelme, I would say he was the best midfielder produced by the country. He definitely earned his call-up to the NT in 2002. He had one bad tournament, and suddenly everyone hates him. I mean, hates him. Nobody likes him anymore! Only Estudiantes fans and a few Boca supporters maybe, and I suspect that even they have their reservations.
Verón was stabbed in the back by his country's supporters, exactly like what has happened to Riquelme. Two enormously talented players who brought great success to the NT not in the World Cup; the first one, granted, played badly in Korea/Japan. Riquelme actually played well in Germany, and despite that and the very obvious fact that we lost because Pekerman took him out, the entire damn country blames him! There always has to be a scapegoat, someone to hang or burn at the stake for not winning the World Cup. And it always seems to be the #10 who gets shoved off the ship.
What is this idiotic need to blame one person for a WC result? Do you honestly think that if ONLY Veron played better, Argentina would have gotten to the next round in 2002? If so, I'm sorry but you are mistaken. The team lost because the team sucked. End of story. Every single player who stepped on the pitch played like utter crap. Bielsa didn't know what to do, the players didn't know what to do, the whole thing collapsed. THAT is what happened.
This past summer, every damn Argentine has forgotten that their country made the quarter-finals! That is nothing to sneeze at, and yet they sneeze and blow their nose all over their own selección. Riquelme may not have been playing his absolute best, but every attacking play flowed through him and it flowed damn well, thank you very much. ARG 6-0 SCG? Does anyone think for a second that it would have been 6 goals without Riquelme? He had a hand in at least three of them. He did not play badly against Germany by any means. He was dead tired from playing 120 minutes against Mexico, and still he performed reasonably. Then he was subbed out for Cambiasso. Midfield control? Gone. Poof! I wonder why. Maybe because the coach took out the team's best playmaker?
Having surrendered control of the midfield AND having replaced the starting goalkeeper who was having a rather excellent tournament actually (everyone has also conveniently forgotten that the terrible football goalie known as Leo Franco was between the posts), Klose, one of the best strikers in the world, takes his chance and scores. Argentina loses ON PENALTIES. That is nothing more than drawing straws. Plain and simple. It was bad luck. And Lehmann had a cheat sheet, which was rather smart of those Germans. They're not dumb people, I assure you, nor do they suck at football.
So, without Riquelme and without Pato, the team loses in what is essentially a lottery. What happens? A nation cries out: Riquelme is useless! Kick him out! What a terrible player! He can't even run! (All this in spite of the fact that he was one of the best players of the tournament in the view of everyone EXCEPT Argentinians) Of course, then the rest of the world's media instantly grabs the headlines from Argentina and starts changing their stories to say that Riquelme's play wasn't enough, he's too slow, he had a poor tournament.
Goddamn! This is one of those times where many would doubt their faith in the national team entirely. I feel so bad for Veron, Aimar, and now Riquelme. Argentinians seem to be simply incapable of getting over the fact that MARADONA DOES NOT PLAY FOOTBALL ANYMORE. Stop looking for a new one! There will never be anyone like him. We have to take what we can get, and right now Riquelme is the best there is and he was driven out because the press got so bad his mother was put in the hospital! Twice!

Hello all... I personally think that by giving Roman some time, and let him get his head on straight with his family and any other problems that he may have, he will be back to the national team.
I dont know how many of you really "feel" soccer as more than just a game (and for those of you who dont understand that phrase, probably means you dont) but there is NO ONE in the world like Riquelme. And I feel Argentina as a team is screwed.
Now many of you will say, "what are you talking about, we have Messi and Aguero". And that is true, two great players who will be come Monumental players for the national team. However, neither one of them is an "enganche". Messi is great, but he still has a long way to go. If anything, hes a "media punta" or a striker. I dont see him really being the key figure in pulling the strings for the national team. Aguero as well is a media punta.
Then we can point the finger at Aimar, and Aimar unfortunately is not that type of player either. Its become apparent that he cannot do it alone on the national team.
For the fans who truely know "Futbol Argentino", you will know that it is not based on playing at "super sonic speeds" like they do in Europe. Text book futbol Argentino is based on multiple touches all around the field and excelerating the game around 20 yds with give-and-go's and slowing the tempo down when need be. But ultimately holding onto the ball as much as possible making the ball circulate. Not like what we see in most of Europe especially England.
I hope that Riquelme realizes after some time that the national team needs him now more than ever. Because we are not creating midfielders of his qualities any more. We now produce strikers and defensive midfielders. NO one like him. So, I say hasta luego to Roman because I'm sure his path will cross with the national team in the future once again.
Riquelme is all that is left of of dying breed, "El Clasico 10". And I feel if the National is to be triumphant in the future we should NOT turn our backs on what makes us with the Brazilians the best players in the world. OUR STYLE OF FUTBOL!! We need to produce more players like him and not conform to the rest of the world. Example 4-4-2... Pathetic.

Xyrus, everything that you wrote about Roman is true. It's as if we eat our own whenever they don't win it all, and we forget all the effort that they put in to it, and how much joy we got out of watching them. Me personally, I enjoyed watching Roman wear our jersey. He wore it proud and he was well deserve of one of the greatest colors in the world.
I think that a lot of Argentineans dislike him because of Roman's demeanor. Meaning, that he looked like he wasn't trying, because he was soooo coool and collective. Bottom line, in the post Maradona era, I think that Roman is amongst our best players and perhaps our best midfielder. (Zannetti and Ayala are probably our best players in the A.P.- "After Pibe" )
I wish Roman the best of luck, and as a country man, always will support him.
But, who is our playmaker now? Aimar? D'Alessandro back on the squad? Kun is an attacking-mid, not a playmaker!! Basile's job just got a whole lot freaking tougher!!

No, i didn't say that we got eliminated from the cup because of Riquelme, but he was going to be "THE" player, something similar to Veron in Korea/Japan 2002, argentina hoped he would do an excellent tournament, but instead he turned up to be a fiasco. Pekerman said "We are going to see the best version of Riquelme"... and i'm still waiting ºLº
Come on, i agree he WAS a great player, but he did almost nothing for the national team. Also, most argentinian people (unless some boca fans) desliked Riquelme in the cup, and everyone knows that Maxi and Ayala were the best players, no doubt...

Xyrus and David, I think you two hit the nail on the head. I was going Copa to see Roman, at least I'll get to see Argentina.
I feel like crying, Roman is an exceptional midfielder, adored by many who understand what Argentine football is about. He controls the game, even when he doesn't have the ball, you see him pointing, controlling the game. No need to say that he is my favorite player. No other player in the world controls a team like him, no other player thrives under the pressure of carrying a team on his shoulders, as Roman does. This is a huge loss. I don't think he will return, unless his mother tells him to, or requsets that he does, because he is a man of stong character who will stick to his decision.
So now the NT has two problems, who'll be the target man, and who will be the enganche? Time to try a few, I'd like to see Andres given a shot but I don'tknow how much his game as an enganche has developed in his time at Brazil. Let's keep an eye on Zaragoza and maybe both Andres and Pablito could gel, get the call up and both lead the team to glory.

As a player, Roman was amazing. However it is really not a big blow to the national team as he can easily be replaced by a handfull of players not much off or better than him.

Great comments, especially about Roman and Veron and about Arg fans. It's pretty obvious that most people outside of Arg. adore and admire Riquelme as a player. I'm not from Arg. but I fell in love with the Arg team in this world cup, and his play was a big reason for this.
I remember when he missed his penalty kick for V-Real, he was so upset. But the fans of Villareal just adore him. He holed himself up in his house, and fans made up huge signs in front of it that said Grande Roman. They knew that although he missed the penalty, he was the main reason they were where they were, and that he felt so horrible for what happened. he didn't say anything at the time, but when he returned, he pledged allegiance to the team, and called it his home. This to me shows how touched he was by the support, as opposed to the lambasting he got from Arg press and fans after the WC.
It's just so sad because there are basically no players in the world left like Roman (Zidane has retired). But he's always had a special personality, more artistic than athletic. I'm not surprised he made this decision, but I'm really upset.
The only way he'll be back is if his mother gets better and asks him to return to the NT. Nothing else.
