For my best memory to my beloved and late friend: Susan Thompson
In loving memory of Susan Wynne Thompson October 1, 1960-October 25, 2012 Susan Wynne Thompson, aged 52, died peacefully on October 25, 2012, with loving family by her side, after a brief but courageous battle with breast cancer.
Susan was born October 1, 1960 in Calgary, Alberta. Susan was the youngest daughter of Murray and Joan Thompson. Susan graduated from William Aberhart High School in Calgary, Alberta in 1978. In 1982, after completing college in Vermillion, Northern Alberta, Susan moved to Whitehorse, Yukon where she began her career as a fisheries technician and biologist for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Department of Environment.
In 1984 Susan travelled to Kenya as a volunteer with Canadian Crossroads International, a journey that formed the foundation for work and friendships that drew her back to Kenya many times. Her passion for fisheries and community development culminated in Fish4Kenya, a project she developed that assisted rural fish farmers.
Susan will be remembered as an eternal optimist and a very gifted person to whom nothing seemed impossible, she just went out there and did it. She was an experienced outdoorswoman, an athlete, a world traveler, a voracious reader, a passionate animal-lover and a committed community volunteer. She enriched us all with her sense of fairness, justice, joy and friendship.
Susan took early retirement from Yukon Government two years ago. Unfortunately, her diagnosis changed the future she had hoped for. Despite the profound disappointment, Susan displayed courage and dignity throughout. Susan is survived by her parents, Murray and Joan Thompson of Calgary, her brother Richard (Diane) of Calgary, her sister Cheryl of Dawson City; nieces Karly and Emily. She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and many friends from around the world.
A memorial service will be held honoring Susan at the United Church at 601 Main Street, Whitehorse, Yukon at 2:00pm on November 18th, 2012. Reception will follow at the Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fish4Kenya at the Scotia Bank in Whitehorse, Yukon to continue the work that Susan has established. The family would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness in our time of need. Special thanks to Dr. Zimmerman and Dr. Kanachowski and the nursing staff at WGH.
