Q. Well, I suppose that the first question that I'll ask is about you. When did you fall in love with "Dance" as an Art form and what prompted you to believe in the "power" of Dance?
A. As a young child, I always moved a lot. I would move to the music my parents played. At 5 years old, I first saw Michael Jackson. I was instantly mesmerized by his dance and music. I listened to Michael and his brothers religiously before starting formal dance training at the age of 9. I studied ballet, jazz, tap, modern and gymnastics.
Q.How did you and Michael end up together... or maybe I should ask how did it all begin between you and Michael?
A. Every morning before going to middle school and during high school, I would watch Michael and Janets short films while I ate my breakfast cereal. I imagined myself on stage performing with both of them. I did this for years.
I attended the Bad and Rhythm Nation: 1814 tours multiple times. I knew all the steps. My friends and I sent a video tape of me doing Janet Jacksons Rhythm Nation Tour choreography to Janet. About one week later I was flying to Japan to meet her and join the tour.
After touring with Janet at 19, I auditioned for Remember the Time with Michael. This was the first time I worked with MJ. It was truly a dream-come true. After Remember the Time, I joined the Dangerous tour as a dancer. Once on the Dangerous tour, I became a choreography partner to Michael. We did the American Music Awards in 1993, the MTV Awards opening number in 1995. Next was the HIStory Tour and Ghosts. For This Is It, I was the associate director and choreographer of the tour and associate producer of the film.
Q. Was your relationship with Michael purely work work work or is there a friendship somewhere in there also?
A. In the beginning our relationship was only about the art and creating. Over the years, it grew into a very special friendship. Michael grew to trust me.
We didnt always speak regularly in the beginning. That changed. During This Is It, we were always together creating the best show Michael, Kenny and I could.
Q.How do you feel after Michael passed away?
A. I feel numb and emotionally exhausted. I still cant believe he is not going to call me with another new idea. I will really miss those calls.
Q. From past experience we all know that Michael was a real perfectionist. What was the climate during rehearsals of the This Is It tour?
A. The climate during This Is It was intense, but loving. We had a huge responsibility that continued to grow daily. Michael was very clear that he wanted to create the greatest show his fans and the world had ever seen.
There was never tension, but a constant awareness of the creativity and energy needed to realize Michaels vision.
Q. Have you noticed any changes in MJ from the time you met until now?
A. Michael had matured in his art and awareness of his responsibilty to the planet. Everything he stood for was based on love, peace, good will and joy.
He loved his fans, our planet and his family. He had always shared these ideals with the world through his music and art, but the world didnt really hear him.
It was necessary for Michael to return to the stage to remind the world of our individual and collective responsibility to our planet. He was even more passionate about his messages this time. Hed say, This Is It! We have to fix this mess! All of the environmental tragedies and poverty that exist really affected Michael, more than people knew.
Q. We know that the This Is It tour would have been the greatest show of all times. Which are the main differences with Michael's past concerts?
A. Michael was a father of 3 children this time around. His children were now old enough to appreciate what their dad loved so much: performing for his fans. Michael was young enough to do it again.
Q. Was Michael really ready to face 50 concerts?
A. Michael was definitely ready to do the concerts. The 50 shows scheduled in London were spread out over 9 months. Michael would have been performing an average of 2 to 3 shows per week.
Q. The selected dancers appeared very motivated and happy about their engagement. How did they react to MJ's death?
A. Eveyone was devastated. We couldnt be apart. We would meet in a different location for many days after Michaels passing to be aorund each other for support.
Q. What about the Dome Project, and how about all the uncompleted songs Michael Jackson wrote in the last decade? Will they see the light in a reasonable time?
A. The Dome Project was the code name for This Is It during production. I hope Michaels songs will be heard by the world, especially the new ideas I heard before he passed.
Q. You've worked with some of the greats like Michael, Madonna, Janet and many more. Do you think that the future will give us some new pop music phenomena of this type or can we say that this era is coming to a close?
A. I think anything is possible. I do know that there will never be another Michael Jackson. He was an instrument of nature and a unique being.
Q.What do the future generations have to look forward to?
A. Future generations have hard work to look forward to. With hard work comes glory. Michael has set the bar so high in all of entertainment, philanthropy and so loved humanity. Let us remember his spirit when dealing with each other. Its not hard to love each other more. Weve learned violent behavior just as weve learned to read in 2-d. 3-d is whats natural.
Q. Thousands of fans around the world believe Michael is still alive, and that his death is an hoax. What can you tell us about all the misteries surrounding this argument?
A. I have heard this and dont believe it. Michael would never take his children, family and fans through the drama of staging such a hoax. Thats not his style.
Hed think that was selfish because it would hurt so many who love him. He was ready to take the stage again and do what he did best. Change the world.

MoviesOnline recently sat down with Michael Jacksons musical director, Michael Bearden, to talk about his new film, Michael Jacksons THIS IS IT, which offers Jackson fans and music lovers worldwide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place beginning this past summer in Londons O2 Arena.
Bearden is an accomplished musical director/keyboardist/arranger/composer for a diverse range of musical superstars. He has performed and/or recorded with some of popular musics giants including: Sting, Carlos Santana, Whitney Houston, Lionel Richie, Chaka Kahn, Patti Austin, James Ingrahm, Patti Labelle, Yoko Ono, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Yossou NDour, Boz Scaggs, Lenny Kravitz, Luther Vandross, Issac Hayes, Aaron Neville, Edie Brickell, Jon Bonjovi and legends Nancy Wilson, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Liza Minelli, Elton John, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles and served as musical director for Madonna and Rod Stewart to name just a few.
His diverse musical skills have also been sought by younger artists including: Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, Destinys Child, Brandy,India Arie, Fantasia, Neyo, Chris Brown, Rhianna, Ashanti, John Mayer, Faith Evans, Brian McKnight, Mary J. Blige, Da Brat, Mya,Marc Doresy, Joss Stone, Usher, Keisha Cole, Angie Stone and musical director for Jennifer Lopez , Anastacia, DAngelo,and The Veronicas, among others.
He has also written, produced, and performed for such notable jazz artists as: Rachelle Ferrell, Herbie Mann, Everette Harp, Will Downing, Nelson Rangell, Marion Meadows, Regina Carter, Noel Pointer, Special EFX, Pieces Of A Dream, Jonathan Butler, Victor Bailey, Stanley Turrentine and collaborated on Herbie Hancock's Grammy nominated album Possibilities.
An accomplished composer, Beardens feature film scores include Drop Squad produced by Spike Lee (starring Eriq Lasalle and Ving Rhames) and the indie film The Visit directed by Jordan Walker Pearlman (starring Rae Dawn Chong and Billy Dee Williams). Michael scored two debut indie features, The Arrangement for filmmaker H.H.Cooper and One Week for director Carl Seaton. In addition, Michael penned the score to Dense, the directorial debut feature film for Soul Foods Vanessa Williams. He scored the feature Constellation (starring Gabrielle Union, Leslie Ann Warren and Billy Dee Williams) as well as the feature film/doc America The Beautiful for director Darryl Roberts, and director Ian Inabas Sundance film/doc American Blackout, as well as the dark comedy "Redrum" starring Jill Marie Jones. Bearden recently performed with all acts at the historic Lincoln Memorial "We Are One" concert for the Obama inauguration.
Michael Bearden is a terrific guy and we really appreciated his time. Heres what he had to tell us about his friendship and recent collaboration with Michael Jackson on his new film, Michael Jacksons THIS IS IT:
At what point did you know that one scene between you and Michael was going to be in the movie? And when you saw it for the first time, what was your reaction?
MB: Oh me and him? Telling him More booty? What happened was after MJs memorial, we had a few days off and then we get a call from AEG -- Kenny Ortega, our wonderful director, Travis Payne, our choreographer and Associate Director and Associate Producer of the film, and me, also Associate Producer of the film. They asked us to come down and see out of the 80, 90, 100 hours we had, maybe a 4-hour long string, so we saw that and that was the first time I saw that scene and I just laughed because that moment in the film is MJ, that whole week, was supposed to come in with me and my band and he would either have something else to do or he didnt so there was me being frustrated because he wasnt there. He was asking for things and I was like Well, if you had been here, I would have had them for you. (laughs)
Q: He wasnt coming?
MB: No, no. It wasnt that he wasnt coming. He was working. We were working. This tour was a massive undertaking. A lot of times Travis would have him or I would have him or Kenny Ortega would have him or we collectively would have him so he was just busy doing a lot of things so my time was getting cheated in the initial stage. It didnt in the end as you saw in the film. It was glorious and all of that. Im never one to back down and then MJ wasnt either. But, it wasnt a confrontational thing. It was just he wanted what he wanted and I wanted what I wanted. Together, he and I would call it
all of us would call it creative jousting. He would do something and I would go Yeah, I like that but try this. So what you see there is not tension so much and Im always silly and as you can see, I made him crack up at the end. He says, I knew exactly what you meant. And we always embraced and we always said I love you. Hed say, God bless you, Bearden. I love you. He would call me by my last name because we had about 10 or 12 Michaels on the tour. (laughs)
Q: Was he not planning to do Bad?
MB: See, heres the thing. The set list, if MJ did every hit that he ever had, he would be on stage for 24 hours or at least a week. One of my earliest meetings with MJ, he actually went on line and, by going on line, I mean his older son, Prince Michael, probably got on line and he asked the fans what they wanted to hear. So he had a computer printout of a list from 1 to maybe 50 or 100 and he really wanted to give the fans and serve them what they wanted. He really loved the fans so much more than any other artist Ive ever worked with. Ive never seen this before ever. One day we were having a meeting he and I and maybe one of his young sons and he showed me the printout, then he showed me his personal handwritten list. Hed take out his reading glasses which I thought was great and he showed it to me and said What do you think, Bearden? And I said, You know, MJ, this is cool, but you have no J5 and you have no Off The Wall. He says, I dont? And he looked at it and went Ahhh. It was an angst ridden thing for us because he had so much material and so much great stuff and we really wanted to serve the fans but he also wanted to do his message pieces of Heal the World and We Are the World. Thats a big thing for him and to rescue this planet and help heal how we treat each other on the planet. So we couldnt take those songs out. Remember the Time, there as Bad. There was so many things I wanted to do and he wanted to do them as well but we just
I said, You know, if we do this MJ, well be on stage for 3, 4, 5 hours. We cant do that every night. Youve got 50 days. He says, Oh yeah, I dont want to do that.
Q: Are there some that will be on the DVD that arent in the film?
MB: Hopefully, there are some things. Obviously we couldnt put everything in a film cause you would be in the theater for 24 hours. Theres gonna be some extras, hopefully. They call it added value now. Its too fancy for me, but hopefully well get to do some numbers on there that we didnt do before.
Q: Do you know which ones?
MB: I dont know. I dont know.
Q: What was he planning for his finale and encore? Did you get that far?
MB: We sorta kinda got that far but not really. We were just on the way there. To this day we dont have the set list. We were in the process of just chiseling. It was my job and his job, but towards the end he gave it to me. He wanted to put it on me. Well you take out the verses cause I dont want to cheat the fans. It was almost too painful for him. He would just go, Oh. I blew up a set list one day, poster size, put it in his dressing room, went in there with him. I said, Okay, Im going out here. You mark it up for me. You do it. And I came back and it was still not touched. I said, MJ, what are you doing? He said, I cant do it. I cant do it. You have to do it. You have to do it. So we would take some things out of it and literally he would look at me. I would put the marker by it and I would go, Okay. Cut that out. And hed go, No, no
It was painful. So we kind of got there. We probably were gonna do Man in the Mirror, but maybe not. We didnt know.
Q: As the finale?
MB: We didnt know. We didnt know.
Q: I always liked the song from Free Willy. I wonder where that ranks on his list?
MB: I dont remember where that ranks. Theres a lot like that that he loved.
Q: In that scene in the movie between you and him where youre talking back, Michael doesnt come across as a diva. How did you see Michael and what did you discover about him after you really got to know him?
MB: I discovered that he was not a diva and he was not a perfectionist in the dictatorial sense where You must do what I say kind of thing. He was very collaborative and a lot of people, including me, didnt really know. I worked with a lotta, lotta stars, big artists, and Michael just had a mystique about him that you didnt think you could touch him. He was quite the opposite. He was quite probably the kindest, the most generous, the most gracious, the most approachable artist that I every worked with in my life, and you wouldnt think he would be. We would say God bless you and then I love you every day. Now how many bosses tell you they love you? Okay? So thats what it was to work with him. He knew what he wanted and he wasnt afraid to tell you. But he was also not afraid of change if you could make something better, make his idea better. He was open to that and he didnt mind being vulnerable in front of you and if you made something better, he would go Oh no, thats better. Thats better. I like that better.
Q: Was he planning to do live vocals for every song?
MB: Yes, and I didnt want him to.
Q: You didnt? Because a lot of artists now when they
MB: Absolutely and everybody does it. Ill tell you what, I can do an experiment right now. Just sit in your chair and do this (bouncing up and down) and try to have a conversation. Now imagine dancing and doing that. And I would tell him and he would just resist it. No. Id say Well MJ, everybody knows you can sing. Youve been doing it since you were 5. Its not like a Milli Vanilli thing. Its you. Its you. But he would not do it. I would say, Okay. Well, at least let me lower the key some and then he would go, Okay. But make it only a half step. Alright MJ. Then, some pieces he would, just like on the J5, and then Id say What about a half step on this? And he said, No, you gotta do long. Im too old to sing these songs. So yeah, youre right, I didnt want him to, but he insisted. And to his credit and to his genius, that was Michael.
Q: For the Jackson 5 stuff, did you lower the register a little bit for him?
MB: Can you do things like he would do them? No, no.
Q: In the film he uses the expression let it simmer a lot. Were there any other Michael Jacksonisms?
MB: There were a lot of MJisms that we just simmer, bathe in the moonlight, Im sizzling. That is my favorite, Im sizzling. I cant think of it. Theres so many. Theres so many and we would just talk. Theres one moment in I Wanna Be Starting Something. You can see him talking to me. I dont hear that [beat boxing]. And he would talk to me like that. So one day he and I were in his room and he said, Yeah, so you know that part? It needs to be louder. And he said, You know, thats like his cousin. It goes through the guitar and his cousin is there. His cousin is running up right next to him. So you got to heavy him and then you have a cousin. He would talk to me like that. Thats a Michael Jacksonism. Just regular, you know, nothing big, just something simple that everybodys able to understand.
Q: Well youre probably the last person I can ever ask this, what did Shamon mean?
MB: Shamon is, its just a combination of come on and some things that he got from his Motown days and its just
if you notice, MJ would never do anything regular, especially when he was on stage. So, every moment, there was no wasted movement. So every time, if you watch the film again, youll see if hes standing there and the singer is singing, if hes doing a duet with Judith, hes always animated and hes always doing something. Hes always gracious and hes always doing this. Every moment means something. I asked him one day MJ, why you have tape on your hands? I always wanted to know that and it was a great gig for me because I would have him personally and it was one of those gigs where he would say, If you had this person alone, what would you ask him? and I took full advantage of it. And to his graciousness, he would say to me, You really want to know? and he would just honestly tell me and he never turned me down. The tape on his fingers he says Well, cause it feels good. It was like a batter in a batters box. The hands have to feel a certain way. But then it was also that if he throws his hand that way, the white, your eye goes to it. So theres no wasted moment. Its a show biz thing. You just go Bam! Youre looking at his movement but that eye, that white will always catch you. You just
So youre on stage doing that. Its just one of his show biz tricks that he learned when he was a kid.
Q: We saw him in the auditions with the dancers, how involved was he with the band? The Australian guitarist, Orianthi (Panagaris), was amazing.
MB: Ill tell you that story. One of my first meetings with MJ was about the band. We chose his drummer. We call him Foot. His name is Jonathan Moffett. Hes been working with MJ for 30 years. I said, Okay, you can have
My thing was I wanted to come in and clean house, just do everything like a new start. Were going to be together for two years. It had to feel like a family. So I didnt want any agenda, any fire starters, anything like that. If you want to be on the road for two years, with an extension of may 3-5 which is what MJ wanted, youd better like the people that youre going to be around and so thats how we chose them. I asked him How did you choose Foot and he said Well, when Jonathan plays, he makes me want to dance. Anytime a dancer says that to you, thats the highest endorsement ever. So he was put there. My bassist, Alex Al, was also put there. We had worked with Michael on the 30th anniversary at the Garden right before 9/11 so he really liked Alex. He pretty much trusted me and let me put the band together but he wanted a guitarist. He wanted a female. He wanted her to be blonde. I put the feelers out and her name came back five times so I actually went on MySpace, sent her a note I am Michael Jacksons musical director this is true. And, of course, she did not believe it. Her manager called me and he was not her former manager (laughs) he was sort of rude. So I said, You know what? Youre going to blow an opportunity for your client. Just give me her personal number. I will call her. I called her personally and then I said, Come down. Ill let you meet Michael. She met Michael. Of course, she knew it was real then. She just couldnt believe she was found on MySpace. And then the rest
our other guitarist, Tommy Organ, he was the only one that auditioned. He came in and he just blew Michael away. Michaels regular guitarist, David Williams, the great Davey Williams, had passed away maybe about a month before we were going to start. So we needed somebody to get that kind of flavor and Tommy came in and just did his thing. MJ handpicked everybody and blessed what I brought in and that was that. He was hands on in everything he did. There was not one thing that he didnt touch wardrobe, lighting. He even designed the ticket for the show. We were there when he did it. He was amazing. I dont see how he did it. There was just so much going on.
Q: Was he specific about why he wanted a woman in the band?
MB: He always had one and he just liked that energy on guitar. Its not that traditional. His prerequisite was Shes got to really be able to shred. Shes got to really be able to play. He didnt just want a woman there. He wanted somebody that could really play. And Ori can really play. Shes an artist on Geffen (Records) now and her careers about to launch. Ive seen videos of her and her record and shes amazing. You will be hearing about her. He just liked that energy. Thats all.
Q: Are you on his album? Someone mentioned that he was working on an album at the same time as the concert. Was it going to be separate?
MB: We were working on an album and it was definitely going to be separate. He was working on an album, new material, all of that.
Q: And thats going to be released at some point?
MB: I dont know. Will.i.am was going to do some things. There were a lot of new producers too. MJ never sang anything. He just had it in his head so I dont know. We never got that far.
Q: Are you planning a tribute concert tour? There was an idea for one but it was cancelled a couple months ago.
MB: Well that particular one was something that Jermaine (Jackson) was trying to do on his own and that wasnt really sanctioned by all of us so we had nothing to do with that. Hopefully, sometime next year around his birthday well do something but its not definitive.
Q: From your perspective, what is Michaels legacy?
MB: Michaels legacy from my perspective is love. Thats what he wanted the world to have. He said we need more of it in the film. Thats what we were able to do with this honor project that his children will be able to see in perpetuity. They will love it. They will appreciate what daddy did which is why he wanted to do it. He said he wanted to do it while he was still young enough to do it and his children were old enough to appreciate it. And his legacy is secure. He loved his fans and he loved the world and he wanted to put more love in it.

Hi! I'm LaToya Jackson, the 16-year-old sister of the J5. In case you missed last month's 16, in which I told you my impressions of brothers Jermaine, Marlon and Randy, this time I'm about to reveal all about mischievous Michael, my 14-year-old brother, known to most of you as a "superstar." To me, however, he's a teasing, always outgoing and friendly but sometimes bothersome, little brother-whom I love and admire a lot (but I don't usually admit that to him!) Michael can charm the fuzz off a peach-he can talk to anyone and make him or her feel at ease and instantly like an old friend! I guess you could say that Michael has "charisma"-that enviable quality of leadership that makes some politicians and entertainers so unforgettable and dynamic. He's not at all shy like some of my other brothers, but Mike is generally quite tactful. He says the right thing to the right person, and has a marvelous knack for sizing up what people are like soon after he meets them. He's very observant and notices everything-even the little things like when I change my hair style! You can't put anything over on him! Laughter accompanies him everywhere he goes, and I rarely remember Mike being in a grumpy mood. The only thing that really bugs him is if some member of the family gets angry and tells him off in front of company. He becomes embarrassed, and is likely to walk away with his head drooping down. But he generally gets over even this in a matter of minutes and is soon back in the room with a whole new barrage of funny remarks to make everyone smile. He often bugs me when I'm trying to read or study something for school. He'll put on a record, or start singing silly stuff and clapping his hands till I eventually give up and go into another room! Mike doesn't like studying much-he'd rather be sketching or singing. Now spend a day with me spying on Mike -from the early morning hours when he hops out of bed and watches cartoons an TV till he scrambles into his red PJs about nine o'clock at night. You'll love him!
Mike's likely to start the morning by raiding the super-big refrigerator in our friendly yellow kitchen. Since he's often up before anyone else, he has to help himself!
Or maybe he'll just settle for a nice, juicy apple. Mike snacks constantly throughout the day, always chewing on either a piece of fruit or candy, or his special favorite, bubble gum.He's not above washing an occasional dish or glass, and he straightens up his bedroom quite regularly. All of us Jacksons help Mom around the house, though she does all the cooking and washing for our large family herself.Mike spends lots of time in and around our pool, which is heated to lukewarm and feels something like a bathtub! He's an excellent swimmer and likes to dive, too. Near the pool, we have a playroom with a pool table and pinball machines-and that's one of his frequent hide-outs --when he's not off sketching somewhere. Art is his biggest passion!Music is, of course, Mike's first love, but did you know that he enjoys playing the drums and is seriously taking piano lessons? He rehearses with the J5 for about three hours a day when the boys are in town, in addition to practicing his instruments. And he has written a number of songs which he can't wait to sing to you!This talented brother relaxes for a moment with Heavy, one of our three German Shepherd dogs, who are not only devoted pets but watchdogs as well. Mike usually plays at least one game of basketball a day to get his exercise. We have a hoop in our driveway, and one of my brothers is almost always playing ball there.Mike takes time out from his busy day to check on how his records are doing in the latest Cash Box. This is his bedroom, which he shares with MarLon.He's very proud of the gold records that adorn our den-TV room. Most are for the J5, but Michael himself earned gold records for his album and single both called Got to Be There, and for his singles Rockin Robin and I Wanna Be Where You Are.Mike always tries to spend some time with Janet, six, our little sister. She adores him and they often watch TV together before bed-time.

Q: Michael, your fans want to know your ideas about a first date!
MJ: On a first date, I like to bring a girl over to my house for a barbeque and a swim, especially on a warm summery evening! I know that some chicks get mad if you don't take them somewhere fancy and spend alot of money on them on a date, but I'm not interested in those kinds of girls. I want someone who I can feel comfortable with just sitting and talking to, or sharing a fun, casual time with! I'm not sayin' that we wouldn't ever go out. I love to go out to movies, concerts, and restaurants, but I think it's important to know one another on a first date, and you can't if you go to watch somethin' all night!
Q: Are you a 'gentleman' on a date?
MJ: I never gave it much thought. Opening doors for girls is something that I just do automatically without thinking, like scratchin' my head when it itches! When you're taught all your life to do polite things for girls, you just can't forget it! It's second nature to you, like breathing or tapping your feet to music!
Q: How do you feel about kissing on a first date?
MJ: I can dig it! I think that if you dig a chick enough to ask her out, you're crazy if you don't want to kiss her. And, if she accepted the date, she likes you and probably wants to be kissed. So, I couldn't think of any reason why you shouldn't! I think I'd like to wait 'till the end of the date before I kissed her, though! I think most girls are afraid you're comin' on too fast if you kiss them right away. But, if I could tell that chick I was with was just waitin' to be kissed, I wouldn't mess around wastin' time! I'd take her in my arms, bend her face back to rest on the back of her seat, and slowly lean toward her, gazin' into her eyes and talking in a slow, smooth voice. Then, I'd press my lips against hers, gently at first, then harder and harder until we're both lost in a soul kiss of true love.
Q: How do you feel about honesty between a guy and a girl?
MJ: I think that bein' honest with one another is important when you're gettin' serious with a chick, and don't want to have her goin' out with other guys. You have to be loyal and true to one another, or your love will never last! But, when you're dating lots of chicks, and the chicks you date go with other guys, honesty isn't so important. Don't get me wrong, though! I don't think lyin' to someone is ever a good or a smart thing to do! But, as long as you haven't made any promises to each other, you have the right to keep some things for yourself! For instance, if you've been dating a chick on and off and she dates other guys, and she asks you where you were when she phoned your house and didn't get an answer, I don't think it's any of her business to know you were out with a different girl! I don't think I have the right to pry into her life either!
Q: What would you do if you fell in love with a girl who was going steady with someone else?
MJ: Well, if I knew from the beginning that she was going with another guy, I probably wouldn't date her, no matter how much I wanted to! But, if I didn't know she was going steady, and I found out after I fell in love with her, I think I'd be pretty mad! Even if I thought that she didn't do it to be cruel, and was just too scared to tell him her true feelin's, I think I'd tell her in a kind, understanding way, to figure out what she was gonna do, and come back after she'd done it.
Q: Michael, what do you admire in others?
MJ: I admire people who are really dedicated to their music and to entertaining people! That's why I admire Sammy Davis Jr, and hope to be like him when I grow up! He's a super professional, who puts a spell over his audience like some kind of magician. Singin' and dancin' his heart out to give his audience a thrill they'll never forget. It takes many years to get like that, and that's my goal.
Q: What is the one thing you dislike in a person?
MJ: I guess it's conceited, snobbish people that really bother me! Some people are very egotistical, and think they're better than everyone else! They're always talkin' about themselves, and can't listen to you when you're trying to tell them something about yourself. They keep looking around to see if someone's lookin' at them, instead of looking directly at you, listening to what you're sayin'! It's like talking to a stone wall. When I meet a chick like that, I just turn off right away!
Q: Here's a hard question - what one thing in your personality would you change if you could?
MJ: Well, my Mom says that I'm a procrastinator, which means that I put off things I don't want to do. I know that it's better to get things out of the way as soon as you can, like cleaning your room, or doing your chores but sometimes I have a hard time gettin' around to them and keep putting them off!

One promise I'll make for you for sure is that if I win STAR Magazine's Superstar of '72 election, I'm gonna be so happy that I'll grab you wherever and whenever we meet, and give you a big kiss to thank you for bein' my fan and for giving me your vote! I always like to show my fans that I dig them and appreciate all they've done for me by holdin' their hand and lookin' right in their eyes as I talk to them (MJ is such a pimp)! When a chick takes the time and trouble to come see me, no matter where I am or how busy I am, I'm gonna do all I can so that when she leaves she'll really feel that it was worth her while! Here are my promises:
Promise Number One: Whether or not I win the title Superstar of '72, I'm going to continue to work even harder at putting together an exciting show (like learning to play the piano!), so that when you come to see us sing and dance, you'll remember our show all your life!
Promise Number Two: I promise that we'll try to make our concert costumes real 'baaad' (future foreshadowing) and foxy to keep you turned on! And I want you to send me any J-5 costume ideas you might have!

In January 1980, I received a call saying that Michael Jackson had specifically requested me to photograph him at Disneyland, where he was taping a television special celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Magic Kingdom. When Michael was not on the set performing, he took every opportunity to explore the park. The moment the director would release him from the set in order to prepare the next shot, Michael would grab my arm and say, Come on, lets hit some rides. Off we went, the two of us accompanied by a Disney security person, who ushered us through secret passageways, making certain we never waited in line. Michael, who was 21 at the time, loved Disneyland, and while sitting next to him on the ridesthe Matterhorn, the Pirates of the CaribbeanI joined right in with his screams and laughter. We really had fun.
Not long after this job, I got another call from the Jacksons manager, Ron Weisner, asking me to shoot Michael at a charity event. He said that Michael had instructed him to hire only me when he needed a photographer. Then Ron asked me, Whats up with you and Michael? I answered, We just get along, I guess. (I had first met Michael in 1974 while photographing the Jackson 5 for Soul Newspaper.) I asked Ron if Michael had given him any indication as to why he wanted only me to photograph him. He said Michael told him, I like Todd because he doesnt talk much. And thats how it began. I was Michaels photographer and friend for the next four years. It was the ride of my life.
From early on, I saw how dedicated Michael was to work. He worked nearly all the time and rarely seemed to relax. A great deal of time was spent in the recording studiothe Jacksons intense focus on creating a flawless product helped make them the success that they became, and Michael was clearly the most focused, hardest-working member of the group. While in the mixing booth, making technical adjustments and working the board with the engineers, he would whisper instructions to his brothers about a vocal arrangement, whispering not because the instructions were secret, but because he was shy and didnt like to yell out his ideas.
In the spring of 1981, Michael and his brothers began rehearsals for the Triumph Tour, which would travel to 35 cities in North America. When Michael found time to relax, he loved to leaf through photographic books. He especially loved books about 1930s Hollywood glamour, richly illustrated childrens books, and coffee-table books on photography. Michael would usually hole up in the rear of the bus, while the others spent their time together in front. I also preferred the quiet at the back, and I would sit down with him while he was engrossed in reading.
My photographs of Michael, from 1974 to 1984, show him as the engaging, charming, youthful person he was before the insatiable demands of his extraordinary celebrity bore so heavily on him. As I reflect, I realize now that this was the time before he was King.

ไมเคิลอวดโรงภาพยนตร์ส่วนตัวที่เพิ่งสร้างเสร็จตกแต่งด้วยเก้าอี้กำมะหยี่หรูหรา ผมคิดว่าเสื้อสเว็ตเตอร์สีฟ้าที่เขาใส่อยู่จะถ่ายรูปขึ้นดีกับเก้าอี้สีแดงเข้ม ผมจึงขอให้เขานั่งลงและแกล้งทำเป็นดูหนัง หนังเรื่องไหน เขาถาม ผมตอบว่า มันไม่สำคัญหรอก หนังเรื่องไหนก็ได้ แต่ไมเคิลก็ยังยืนกราน ท็อดด์ คุณต้องบอกผมว่าหนังเรื่องไหน ถ้าคุณอยากให้ผมมีปฏิกิริยาโต้ตอบ โอเค งั้นเอาเป็นหนังตลกของชาลี แช็ปลิน ผมแนะ เรื่องไหนหละ ไมเคิลถาม เขามีหนังตั้งหลายเรื่อง คุณรู้ไหม สมองของผมว่างเปล่า แต่โชคดีที่ผู้ช่วยตะโกนว่า เรื่อง Modern Times ซิ ไมเคิลตอบ โอเค งั้นตอนไหนของหนัง ผมเริ่มหงุดหงิด ผมบอก ไมเคิล มันเป็นหนังตลก แค่หัวเราะออกมาก็เท่านั้น! มันเริ่มจะเกินเวลา พวกเราก็เหนื่อยล้าและอยากจะรีบทำงานให้เสร็จ แต่ไมเคิลกำลังสนุกสนานกับเรื่องเหล่านี้อยู่ อืม เขาเริ่ม ถ้าคุณอยากให้ผมหัวเราะ งั้นคุณต้องเล่าเรื่องตลกให้ผมฟังซิ แต่คุณบอกให้ผมแกล้งทำเป็นดูหนัง แล้วหนังเรื่องไหนที่คุณอยากให้ผมดูหละ สุดท้าย ผมยอมแพ้และทำหน้าตาตลกใส่เขา ซึ่งทำให้เขาหัวเราะออกมาจนได้

ก่อนคอนเสิร์ตเกือบจะทุกครั้ง จะมีการประชุมกันที่ห้องแต่งตัวเพื่อทบทวนลักษณะเฉพาะต่างๆของสถานที่แสดงซึ่งจะมีผลต่อคอนเสิร์ต สถานที่แสดงแต่ละแห่งจะแตกต่างกันในเรื่องเสียง ที่ตั้งของ mixing-booth และการจัดที่นั่ง รวมทั้งกฎเกณฑ์ต่างๆ จะมีการปรับเปลี่ยนเล็กน้อยในทุกๆโชว์ตามความจำเป็นของสถานที่ ไมเคิลได้ใช้โอกาสนี้เพื่อปรับปรุงให้โชว์ดีขึ้นและชี้ข้อบกพร่องของโชว์ครั้งที่ผ่านมา
ในปี 1983 ผมได้ไปถ่ายรูปไมเคิลสำหรับขึ้นปกนิตยสารที่บ้านของเขาใน Encino, California เขาเพิ่งเสร็จจากการปรับเปลี่ยนบ้านให้เป็นบ้านในฝันของเขาได้ไม่นาน บ้านที่มีโรงภาพยนตร์ สวนสัตว์ และการตกแต่งแบบดิสนีย์แลนด์ที่หลังบ้าน บ้านหลังนี้เป็นเหมือนการทดลอง
