บทสัมภาษณ์เจ้าของร้านหนังสือเล็กๆที่มีชื่อร้านว่า Unnameable Books
Your store, it's certainly not a typical bookstore in the sense that there are a lot of popular titles that are not very prominent. But there's a lot of -- I wouldn't call it obscure -- but there are a lot of slightly lesser known philosophic or poetic works. For instance, you've got a pretty extensive collection of Maurice Blanchot. Not exactly every Barnes & Noble is going to have that. What was your thought process in terms of the books and authors you like to carry? Is there some kind of guiding principle?
The guiding principle is: I am trying to make my idea of a good bookstore. A lot of that does have to do with carrying things that are not carried at other bookstores, that I think should be available, that should be as available to the casual browser as is it is to people who go out looking for it. And I am very engaged in the smaller press world, and I am very interested in independent media, and stuff that is not a part of giant businesses that run most of the media, including most of the publishers.
Why do people continue to come into your store than, say, just get on Amazon?
The possibility of browsing is a big one. The possibility of seeing things you don't intend to see, that you're not looking for. That's the reason that I got to bookstores, especially used bookstores. I think with shopping online, if you are very directed in your reading and you know what you intend to read, it's easier to search for it online and UPS will deliver it to you.

ผมเชื่อว่าไม่มีหนังสือแปลเล่มไหนเป็น definitive แม้ในยุคหนึ่งสมัยหนึ่ง ฉบับแปลนั้นจะได้รับการยกย่องว่าดีมาก แต่เมื่อการเวลาเปลี่ยนไป ทั้งจากภาษาที่ใช้ ทั้งจากความรู้ที่สะสมเพิ่มพูนขึ้น การใช้ภาษาในการแปลที่แตกต่างกัน ผลงานคลาสสิคสมควรได้รับการหยิบมาแปลให้นักอ่านรุ่นหลังได้ดื่มด่ำซาบซึ้งในอรรถรสของวรรณกรรมชิ้นนั้นอีก

Doctor Zhivago ฉบับแปลของคู่สามีภรรยานักแปลวรรณกรรมรัสเซียRichard Pevear และ Larissa Volokhonsky อ่านความเห็นได้ใน California Literary Review และ The Globe and Mail
จำได้ว่าตัวเองอ่านหนังสือทั้งสองเล่มในสมัยวัยรุ่น อายุราว 19-20 ปี ชอบมากทั้งสองเล่ม อนาคตต้องหาเวลากลับไปอ่านซ้ำ
มีเพื่อนที่รู้ว่าผมรักในวรรณกรรมรัสเซีย ส่ง link นี้มาให้อ่าน .. ผมไม่รู้จักอาจารย์อิเคดะ ชาวญี่ปุ่น แต่สิ่งที่เขากล่าวถึงความชื่นชอบวรรณกรรมรัสเซียอย่างลึกซึ้งตั้งแต่วัยยุวชน ไม่ต่างจากผมเลย
ข้าพเจ้าได้เข้าร่วมสนทนากว่า 1,600 ครั้ง กับผู้นำและนักคิดระดับโลกมากมายหลายท่าน แม้ว่าพวกเขาจะมาจากต่างชาติต่างภาษาก็ตาม ทั้งหมดล้วนมีสิ่งหนึ่งที่เหมือนกัน เกือบทั้งหมดแทบไม่มีการยกเว้น พวกเขามีความรักในวรรณกรรม โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง หลาย ๆ ท่านก็ชมชอบวรรณกรรมรัสเซียเป็นพิเศษ

Dostoevsky Our Contemporary
ช่วงหลังผมไม่ค่อยได้แวะเข้ามาเขียนบล็อก เนื่องจากติดภารกิจเรื่องเรียน นึกย้อนกลับไป ไม่แน่ใจว่าตัดสินใจถูกที่ไปเรียนหรือไม่ ความรู้ย่อมได้แน่.. แต่เวลาที่เสียไปกับเข้าห้องเรียน การอ่านหนังสือเพื่อไปสอบ ช่างเยอะเหลือเกิน
พูดถึงการอ่านหนังสือไปสอบ ผมอ่านตำราทั้งที่เป็นเล่ม และบางส่วนอ่านผ่านอีบุ๊คส์หน้าจอคอมพิวเตอร์ แต่เวลาทำข้อสอบ ผมกลับนึกได้เฉพาะเนื้อหาที่อ่านจากตำราหนังสือที่เป็นเล่ม จำได้ว่าประเด็นที่ถามอยู่ตำแหน่งซ้ายขวาบนล่างของหน้ากระดาษหนังสือ นึกได้กระทั่งบันทึกที่เราจดไว้ที่ขอบกระดาษ
ต่างจากเนื้อหาที่อ่านผ่านหน้าจอคอม กลับจำได้เลือนลาง ไม่แม่นยำเหมือนกับที่อ่านจากหนังสือที่เป็นเล่ม
สิ่งนี้ทำให้ผมคิดถึงประเด็นที่มีคนทำวิจัยด้าน Neuroscience ในเรื่องการอ่านจากหนังสือเล่มกับการอ่านผ่านหน้าจอคอมพิวเตอร์ แม้เราอ่านสิ่งเดียวกัน แต่ผลกระทบต่อสมองแตกต่างกันไป

The problem with specialization is that it makes you into a specialist. It cuts you off, not only from everything else in the world, but also from everything else in yourself. And of course, as college freshmen, your specialization is only just beginning. In the journey toward the success that you all hope to achieve, you have completed, by getting into Stanford, only the first of many legs. Three more years of college, three or four or five years of law school or medical school or a Ph.D. program, then residencies or postdocs or years as a junior associate. In short, an ever-narrowing funnel of specialization. You go from being a political-science major to being a lawyer to being a corporate attorney to being a corporate attorney focusing on taxation issues in the consumer-products industry. You go from being a biochemistry major to being a doctor to being a cardiologist to being a cardiac surgeon who performs heart-valve replacements.
Again, there's nothing wrong with being those things. It's just that, as you get deeper and deeper into the funnel, into the tunnel, it becomes increasingly difficult to remember who you once were. You start to wonder what happened to that person who played piano and lacrosse and sat around with her friends having intense conversations about life and politics and all the things she was learning in her classes. The 19-year-old who could do so many things, and was interested in so many things, has become a 40-year-old who thinks about only one thing. That's why older people are so boring. "Hey, my dad's a smart guy, but all he talks about is money and livers."

ใน The New Criterion มีบทความน่าอ่าน Columbia beats Harvard โดย James Piereson เมื่อมองไปที่หลักสูตร Core Curriculum (Great Books Program) ผมเห็นด้วยกับผู้เขียน และเชื่อเสมอมาว่า Core Curriculum ของโคลัมเบียดีที่สุดในสหรัฐอเมริกา
Svetlana Geier เป็นผู้แปลดอสโตเยฟสกี้เป็นภาษาเยอรมันคนสำคัญ ปัจจุบันเธออายุ 85 ปี พื้นเพเป็นชาวยูเครน เธอได้แปลหนังสือ 5 เล่มเอกของดอสโตเยฟสกี้ คือ Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, Demons, The Idiot และ The Adolescent
ชีวิตของเธอได้ถูกทำเป็นสารคดีในปีนี้ ชื่อว่า The Woman with Five Elephants (5 คือ หนังสือ 5 เล่มของดอสโตเยฟสกี้) ดู Trailer ได้ที่นี่ครับ

Publishing: France's book obsession
วิดีโอคลิปจากรายการข่าวของสถานี France 24 ที่พูดถึงแวดวงหนังสือของฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งช่วงนี้ของปีเป็น La Rentree Litteraire มีหนังสือออกใหม่จำนวนมาก
Its a particularly French phenomenon, and theres even a term for it: la rentree, or the return after the summer break. And to mark it every year is la rentree litteraire, the time when millions of French people brush off the sand and put away those beach reads. This is when local publishers flood the market with hundreds of releases. But how many of these books are actually read, particularly by the younger generation wholl reach for their iPhones or iPads rather than opening a book?
