What is this Livro do Desassossego [The Book of Disquiet]? Neither 'commonplace book', nor 'sketchbook', nor 'florilegium' will do. Imagine a fusion of Coleridge's notebooks and marginalia, of Valery's philosophic diary and of Robert Musil's voluminous journal. Yet even such a hybrid does not correspond to the singularity of Pessoa's chronicle. Nor do we know what parts thereof, if any, he ever intended for publication in some revised format.
What we have is a haunting mosaic of dreams, psychological notations, autobiographical vignettes, shards of literary theory and criticism and maxims. 'A Letter not to Post', an 'Aesthetics of Indifference', 'A Factless Autobiography' and manual of welcomed failure (only a writer wholly innocent of success and public acclaim invites serious examination).
If there is a common thread, it is that of unsparing introspection. Over and over, Pessoa asks of himself and of the living mirrors which he has created, 'Who am I?', 'What makes me write?', 'To whom shall I turn?' The metaphysical sharpness, the wealth of self-scrutiny are, in modern literature, matched only by Valery or Musil or, in a register often uncannily similar, by Wittgenstein.

This is not a book to be read quickly or, necessarily, in sequence. Wherever you dip, there are 'rich hours' and teasing depths.

ผมรู้สึกว่าตัวเองยากที่จะบรรยายความรื่นรมย์อันประหลาดล้ำจากการอ่าน The Book of Disquiet ของนักเขียนโปรตุเกส Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) นักวิจารณ์ศิลปะคนสำคัญแห่งศตวรรษที่ 19 Walter Pater เคยบอกว่า ความเยี่ยมยอดของศิลปะนอกจากเปี่ยมด้วยงดงามแล้ว ยังแฝงด้วยเสน่ห์อันประหลาดล้ำลึกต่อผู้เสพ หนังสือเล่มนี้ของ Pessoa เป็นเช่นนั้น
ชื่อเสียงของ Pessoa ในช่วงทศวรรษ 1990 เปรียบไปก็เหมือนกับ Kafka ในทศวรรษ 1950 ที่มาโด่งดังหลังจากเสียชีวิตไปแล้ว หนังสือของทั้งสองคนสะท้อนโลกที่แปลกแยกและโดดเดี่ยว The Book of Disquiet เป็นอัตชีวประวัติและสมุดบันทึกที่ทำให้ผมต้องขบคิด ทุกประโยค ทุกบรรทัดของ Pessoa แฝงความหมายอันลึกซึ้ง

ใช่แล้ว.. ความคิดหนังสือเล่มนี้ตรงข้ามกับทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างที่ผู้คนปัจจุบันเชื่อถือ ผมชอบมากที่มันกระตุ้นความคิดเห็นโต้แย้งขึ้นในใจผม บางข้อความผมอาจเห็นต่างไป แต่นี่คือความเยี่ยมยอด อย่างที่ Emerson เคยบอกไว้ว่า "In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts; they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this."

ไปเห็นในเว็บอเมซอนของญี่ปุ่น มีเล่ม Austerlitz ของเขาในฉบับแปลภาษาญี่ปุ่น และไม่ได้มีแต่เล่ม Austerlitz ที่นั่นยังแปลงานของ Sebald เล่มอื่นๆอีกเพียบ

โดยส่วนตัวผมชอบ Literary Travel หลายสถานที่ซึ่งอยากไปได้แรงบันดาลใจจากวรรณกรรมล้วนๆ
เพิ่งได้อ่านบทความ Passage through India inspires literary tours ที่เขียนถึงคนรักหนังสือ มารวมกลุ่มอ่านหนังสือเกี่ยวกับอินเดีย 6 เล่ม ระยะเวลา 6 เดือน ก่อนที่จะเดินทางไปอินเดียสัมผัสสถานที่จริง เปรียบกับจินตนาการที่ได้รับจากหนังสือ
Benjamin Walsh ผู้ริเริ่มความคิดของกลุ่ม เล่าถึงประสบการณ์ว่า
Pulling south out of Mumbai two years ago, he cracked open David Davidar's The Solitude of Emperors and realized as the sun rose the next morning he was riding the same train as the book's protagonist.
"The windows and doors were all open, I was watching all this incredible landscape go by and I was reading about a young journalist who travels from Bombay (Mumbai) to cover communal violence in southern India," Walsh recalls.
"It was very likely the same train, even the same train number," he says. "All of a sudden this idea popped into my mind could I convince 10 or 12 customers to do this sort of thing with me?"

วรรณกรรมแปล ปรอทวัดอุณหภูมิสังคมความคิด
ดูเหมือนหลังจากการประกาศรางวัลโนเบลสาขาวรรณกรรมปีนี้แล้วมีคำวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ตามมาเยอะเหลือเกิน โดยเฉพาะจากสื่อฝั่งอเมริกาและอังกฤษ ก่อนหน้านี้หลายปีมักมีเครื่องหมายคำถามเช่นนี้ (เขาหรือเธอคือใคร?) แต่ปีนี้ดูทวีความเข้มข้นมากขึ้นอีก
คอลัมนิสต์บางคนถึงกับออกมาพูดว่ารางวัลโนเบลสาขาวรรณกรรมปราศจากความสำคัญ
บางคนบอกว่านี่เป็นการหักหน้าคนอเมริกันอย่างรุนแรง (เพราะคณะกรรมการสวีดิชรู้ดีว่าผู้อ่านอเมริกันไม่รู้จัก)
จากประเด็นดังกล่าว ทำให้ผมคิดว่าสิ่งที่สื่อฝั่งอเมริกาและอังกฤษไม่ได้หยิบมาพูดถึงคือ ปัจจุบันพวกเขาใส่ใจต่อวรรณกรรมแปลจากภาษาต่างประเทศมากแค่ไหน พวกเขายังคิดว่า โลกภาษาอังกฤษ เป็นศูนย์กลางของวรรณกรรมโลกในปัจจุบัน ให้ความสำคัญเฉพาะหนังสือที่เขียนขึ้นด้วยภาษาอังกฤษ?
จากรายงานในนิวยอร์กไทม์สปี 2005 เคยบอกว่า of the 185,000 books printed in English in the United States in 2004, only 874 were adult literature in translation. อัตราวรรณกรรมแปล 0.5% ถือว่าเป็นตัวเลขที่น้อยมาก ใช้คำว่า ช็อก ก็ได้สำหรับประเทศอย่างสหรัฐอเมริกา
มองย้อนกลับมาที่ตลาดหนังสือบ้านเรา ผมไม่แน่ใจว่าถ้าสำรวจอัตราส่วนวรรณกรรมแปลต่อหนังสือที่ตีพิมพ์ทั้งหมดในเมืองไทยจะเป็นเท่าไหร่ วรรณกรรมในความหมายผมคือ Literature ไม่ได้หมายถึง Popular Fiction เพราะฉะนั้นไม่นับหนังสือ J.K.Rowling, Dan Brown รวมทั้ง Chic Lit ทั้งหลายที่แปลออกมา อัตราดังกล่าวคาดว่าคงน้อยมากๆ
ตรงนี้บางคนอาจบอกว่าสำนักพิมพ์ในเมืองไทยไม่สนับสนุนการพิมพ์วรรณกรรมแปลดีๆ ผมกลับมองตรงข้าม เมื่อไม่มีกลุ่มคนอ่าน ใครอยากจะพิมพ์ ลงทุนไปแล้วเจ๊ง พิมพ์แล้วขายไม่ออก..
