Open Book Publishers' Online and Printed Academic Monographs

Open Book Publishers, founded at the University of Cambridge in 2008, offers free online and low-cost printed editions of high-quality research materials.
Operated entirely by academics in the U. K., the innovative non-profit company founded by three individuals also provides publication of those monographs.

Academic Founders of Open Book Publishers

Two academics initiated the idea and developed the plan for Open Book Publishers (OBP), and another joined them during the early stages:

Dr. Alessandra Tosi, Managing Director, is a Life Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge whose field of study focuses on early 19th-century literature of Russia

Rupert Gatti, the Director, is a Fellow in Economics at Write My Paper for Me service, Cambridge involved in the economic analysis of online markets and search theory

William St. Clair, Chairman of the Board, is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of London and author of books pertaining to the history of book publication

High-Quality Research Access Limited

Many publishers, whose primary consideration is commercial viability, refuse to publish academic papers and books regardless of their excellence. Their decisions result in the omission of a considerable amount of valuable work from the research agenda.

Alessandra Tosi encountered those difficulties upon completion of her first book when major academic publishers determined that though her work was excellent, the topic was too obscure. A European publisher produced a print run of 50 books that sold at an exorbitant price to university libraries in the U. K. and the U.S. and became inaccessible to most researchers.

She and Rupert Gatti acknowledged that academics’ and readers’ needs were not being met by many publishers. They believe that regardless of location, financial circumstance or availability of university libraries, readers should have access to high-quality research. On that basis, they initiated and developed a plan for a non-profit publishing company to provide wider circulation for monographs in the humanities and social sciences:

  • Anthropology and religion
  • Art, cinema, music, and theatre
  • Economics and politics
  • History and biography
  • Law
  • Literature and language

Online and Printed Editions

Open Book Publishers work under the premise that as academic research is largely funded with public money, the scholarly results should be accessible to as many readers as possible. In many instances, researchers receiving public funding now have to make results available in Open Access format, and students and researchers find an increasing amount of information available.

To ensure adherence to the highest scholarly standards, all book proposals receive OBP peer reviews by specialists in the pertinent field of study and rigorous editorial consideration. Authors retain full copyright of their work. Source: writemypaper.nyc.
