Memoires of Phuket… at The Naka Island, a luxury collection resort and spa, Phuket

If I were to recall the best-designed resort with comfort, convenience and beautiful natural surroundings…and most importantly easy transportation access… one luxury resort often comes to mind…on The Naka Island, Phuket.

The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort and Spa is a luxurious resort in the Starwood Group, which of course guarantees its quality and service. The resort itself is located on the Naka Yai Island close to the shore-- a boat ride just minutes away from the main land. This island itself is in the midst of natural beauty, crystal clear sea and is home to a local village where we can experience the locals’ way of living of whom the majority are fishermen. One of the most impressive aspect of this resort is its design and décor of their rooms which blends in well with its natural surroundings. Their rooms offer comfort in a relaxing ambient. Above all, the rooms here are mostly Pool Villas. Each villa has its own private swimming pool surrounded by trees and gardens. This is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet within nature’s reach. This magazine will take you along for a visit to the resort’s most luxurious accommodation which is the Royal Horizon. This unit boasts a spacious living area, a large private swimming pool.. and a breath-taking view of the sea. One drawback of this resort is that its beaches during low tide are rather stony, not exactly appealing during low tide. But during high tides, the sea water is crystal clear and inviting for a splash. One activity not to be missed when visiting this resort is kayaking around the island.

Let’s take a look inside The Naka Island, a Luxury Collection Resort and Spa that intrigued me so much with its design, tranquility and natural touch that keeps me coming back here. The 132nd  issue of Chan Mai Chai Khao magazine for this August is now available online. With this issue is the compilation of the memoires from my 2 visits to The Naka Island luxurious resort on Naka Island.

First of all I headed off for the resort from Phuket International Airport with the convenience of a BMW in a 20 minute journey to the pier at Ao Po Grand Marina Phuket to hop on the resort’s speed boat.

A short speed boat journey away, we arrive at the Naka Yai Island. The resort has its own private pier which is very convenient.

Even Naka Yai Island is a short distance away from the main shore, the sea water is crystal clear and very inviting for a splash.

Flawless surroundings at the resort’s pier.

Let’s take a look at the map of Naka Yai Island for a bird’s eyeview of the island. The island is home to a small village and surrounded by dense mangrove forests.

The speed boat that services guests on the island.

Not only is the pier an access point to the island, it’s a viewpoint too.

Another shot of the pier. As soon as guests arrive, the resort’s staff welcomes the guests to The Naka Island, a luxury collection & spa with a beat of a gong.

The resort’s landscape is filled with lush greenery giving a relaxing atmosphere.

Before we move on to the resort’s atmosphere, let’s take a look atthe resort map. Here, there are 6 types of accommodation choices. The majority of the rooms are Tropical Pool Villas and Seaview Pool Villas.

Although most of the accommodations offered here have their private pools, there is also a main pool for all as well.

Pool beds within the pool to enjoy a closer reach to water.

The central pool is a main feature of this resort. Due to its expansive size, the pool has two levels.

The pool also enjoys a sea view. Particularly in the evenings, guests can admire the sunset from this pool.

A scenic view of the sea.. relaxing atmosphere from the pool.

Pool beds right in the pool.. One can read, admire the view and go for a dip in the pool easily.

Resort surroundings… give an impression of isolation..escaping the hectic life from the outside world.

The spacious two-level pool is very appealing for a splash indeed.

Near the pool, there’s a fitness center with plenty of equipment to please those who love exercising.

Pool beds right in the pool. Cool and calm atmosphere.

In the background, is the fitness center located next to the seaside.

Breathtaking view and cool atmosphere with lush trees and lawn at the pool.

The resort’s beach surroundings.

The tranquil beach is a relaxing place to read your favorite book yet still convenient to access water sports.

Near the resort’s dining area.

The sea during the my visit was exquisite. The pristine sea was very inviting for a splash.

The hammock here was one of my favorite spots to enjoy the view and the sea breeze.

A variety of water sports are available here, such as sail boats, kayaks. For those boat lovers, these boats can be sailed all around the island.

The vast blue sky, pristine sea in front of the resort with a scenic view of the island of Phuket in the distance.

My favorite spot. Wish I can go back soon.

During high tides, the ambience is impeccable. But during the low tides, the scene is a bit less appealing.

Green grass and crystal clear sea.. makes this resort one of most relaxing places to visit.

Let’s take a closer look at the sea.

My favorite hammock right next to the picturesque sea.

Although each room has its own private pool, a dip in the central pool is highly recommended.

The curving contours of the pool are eye-catching.

Next we’ll go to see the Tropical Pool Villa that I like a lot.

Amidst the gardens, the villa may only offer a partial view of the sea, but the atmosphere is second to none.

The design inside the villa is beautiful, warm and welcoming.

The day bed next to the main bed can be used as an extra bed.

A desk thoughtfully embedded in the floor offers us a scenery of the pool and lush greenery outside while working.

Behind the bedroom is the bathroom which is spacious with a garden in the middle giving a natural touch to it.

Surroundings at the private pool outside, which has a bathing pool right next to it.

Next I’ll take you to the highlight of this resort.

Which is the spa.. The spa here is spacious and comprises many buildings.

The building itself is in earth tone which blends well with the natural surroundings.

The Watsu Massage Pool which is used for in-water massage.

The spa buildings are beautifully designed.

The clear blue sky contrasts with the earth toned spa beautifully.

Guests can stroll through the spa even without using the spa facility.

The design here blends in well with the natural surroundings.

And we close off the spa visit with this picture of the spa’s signature in-water massage pool.

Another important highlight is the resort’s most luxurious unit…

Which is the Royal Horizon…the only unit in the resort.

Let’s take a look of the room plan… the expansive unit has a living area as well as a kitchen.

The private swimming pool boasts a breath-taking sea view.

The master bedroom design is warm and welcoming.

This particular villa has two bedrooms. The other bedroom is on the other side of the villa.

The spacious interior of the villa.

The sea view from the living room area.

The villa’s earth tone offers a warm and soothing natural touch to the villa.

The bathroom behind the bedroom is also spacious.

There’s even a quiet corner to sit in the bathroom.

Along this hallway, are the closets, sink, clothes hanging rack.

The decorations made from wooden and natural materials give a natural and warm touch to the villa.

In the middle of the hallway, there’s a garden offering an atmosphere close to nature.

Back to the bedroom which has many corners to lay back and relax.

The bed is so soft and comfortable that you wouldn’t want to get up.

The sea view from the bedroom.

Now let’s take a look at the private pool. The villa’s exterior is incredibly spacious.

The villa’s private pool is also spacious.

The island in the pool offers pool beds to lay back and admire the view.

This villa has two bedrooms for 4 guests but an extra bed is also available.

The dining room in the villa with an eye-catching, breath-taking view of the sea.

Another relaxing corner at the swimming pool.

I am impressed with this island in the middle of the pool… One can just jump right into the pool.

The villa is very refreshing and relaxing.

Another view from the pool beds .. making this villa another place to admire the beautiful panoramic sea view.

You have to wade through the water to go to the island in the pool.

It was my luck that at the time of my visit, the clear blue sky gave a luster of matching blue pool and sea.

Another relaxing corner in the villa.

If you ever get to stay here, you’d probably be so attached that you won’t get to go anywhere else.

This is ideal for a family holiday or with friends.

This is possibly the most luxurious and most scenic Pool Villa I’ve ever visited.

Let’s continue with the atmosphere around the resort. Later in the morning, more guests gather up around the central pool.

The pristine beaches with clear blue sea must appeal to all sea lovers.

The beach here is where the Beachfront Pool Villas are located.

The Ao Po Grand Marina pier is in the distant.

A bit more on the central pool surroundings.

The pool atmosphere here is very impressive.

A spacious pool with a scenic sea view.

The tranquil beach near the pool is very relaxing.

During high tides, one can splash right into the sea in front of the resort.

Or opt for water sports such as kayaking around the island. There’s also  a pool billiard and a library.

Crystal clear water nearby the resort’s pier.

Time to go home now. Upon departure, there’s another beat of the gong to bid guests farewell. This is another impressive visit. Totally look forward to returning here sometime.

The resort’s speed boat brings us back to Ao Po Grand Marina pier to be taken to Phuket International Airport in a BMW.

As usual, we end this issue with a cover picture of the Royal Horizon Villa with an incredible spacious private pool and impressive atmosphere.

I’m totally impressed with my two visits to The Naka Island, a luxury collection resort. This island resort is a special retreat to escape the hectic urban life. Transportation access to the resort is convenient as it is located on Naka Yai Island which is a short distance away from the main land, approximately a 5 minute speed boat journey. A variety of breakfast is available with its guaranteed quality as one of Starwood’s alliance resorts. For outdoor lovers, this resort offers a wide range of outdoor activities from kayaking around the island to cycling around the resort, or even experience the locals’ way of living on Naka Yai Island. Other resort facilities offered include the spacious fitness center with a variety of equipment, sail boats, pool billiards, etc. Despite being situated on an island, the resorts facilities are no less than those on the main land. Those who enjoy spa experience would enjoy the resort’s extensive spas, including the in-water massage called Watsu Massage Pool. The most impressive feature of this resort to me is its matching design with the natural surroundings. One can delve in the resort all day tirelessly and become lost in the natural atmosphere.

Here’s a summary of the resort’s pros and cons in my opinion.

Pros
-The resort is located on an island in the sea with impeccable atmosphere and crystal clear waters. The beach is a beautiful point to admire the sunset.
-The villas are beautifully designed, very relaxing and blends well with its natural surroundings.
-The central pool is expansive, overlooking the sea with a scenic sea view.
-A variety of activities are available to choose from such as kayaking around the island, cycling around to observe the locals’ way of living.
-A wide selection of spa treatments and facilities available, large fitness center.
-It is an island resort that is a good retreat for escaping the hectic urban life while still enjoying convenient access due to its proximity to the shore.
-The resort’s dining area and bar offers delicious food as well as scenic view.
-Resort staff are totally service-minded, offering help in every possible way.

Cons
-Parts of the beach are rather stony during low tides which is less appealing to the eye. But during high tides, the beaches are flawless.
-The sea can become rough during rainy periods making the speed boat journey inconvenient at times. However, the boat journey is a short distance.

This is another resort I am totally impressed with. At this juncture, I’d like to thanks Mr. Erich, the resort’s GM for the warm hospitality, and all the resort’s staff for their service heart. If I have the chance, I’d definitely return for a visit. Thank you again for reading this magazine. See you in the next issue which I’ll compile a list the top 10 luxurious resorts in Thailand.

Special Thanks to Nong Oh (Wipawee Usaha Hattagam) for English descriptions.
