If you want to keep your pet inside your house you should have an ESA letter for housing. To get the ESA letter you will need to consult a mental health specialist either in person or online. This specialist will assess your mental and emotional state through several sessions and assessments. You will then be granted your ESA letter only if the specialist believes having an emotional pet around you can improve your situation. ESA’s inflight companionship The emotional support animals are allowed to accompany their human companions in the passenger cabin and travel with them as long as the pet owner has the appropriate ESA letter. This is allowed under federal law and the Air Carrier Access Act of 1986. If you have a pet you should have an emotional support animal letter. Under the law, no airline carrier can bar ESAs to fly in the passenger cabin with their human companions. However, it is advisable for the ESA owners to contact and inform the airline carrier in advance to allow them to accommodate the pet animal with the person on board. This helps them avoid complications in flight which can arise from disturbances to the passengers and from a non-hypoallergenic pet itself. Responsibilities of an ESA parent Though no guidelines and codes are incumbent upon the ESA pets and owners, being ESA ambassadors each ESA parent should be responsible for their pet animal and take extra care not to cause any disturbances in flight. Your ESA is not allowed to take up more space beyond the personal space provided by your seat in the cabin. Make sure that your pet stays at your feet and does not cross over or occupy the foot space of your fellow passenger. You can have your pet on your lap as long as the pet is short enough not to extend beyond your lap. You should also make sure that your pet animal is obedient and responsive to your commands. Though there is no legal requirement for the ESA to be trained to be in social situations. Having an ESA that is adaptable to new spaces and places, and lots of people will allow you to have a smooth flight and a pet adored by both the crew and the passengers.
