Puff, the Magic Dragon - Peter. Paul and Mary

เพลง “Puff, the Magic Dragon” เป็นเพลงแนว Folk ท่วงทำนองเรียบง่าย มีเนื้อหาเหมือนนิทานเด็ก ตัวละครเป็นสัตว์ในเทพนิยายคือ มังกร ที่มีเพื่อนเล่นเป็นเด็กชาย เพลงนี้เป็นผลงานของสองเด็กหนุ่มแห่ง Cornell University เมื่อปี 1959 คือ Leonard Lipton และ Peter Yarrow โดยแต่งเป็นบทร้อยกรองก่อน

ต่อมา Peter Yarrow , Paul Stookey และ Mary Travers ร่วมกันบันทึกแผ่นเสียงเพลงนี้ ในปี 1962 โดยใช้ชื่อ Peter. Paul and Mary ส่งให้เพลง “Puff, the Magic Dragon” ติดอันดับ 2 ใน Billboard Hot 100 ก่อนจะขึ้นสู่อันดับหนึ่งในต้นปีถัดมา

อย่างไรก็ตาม แม้เพลงนี้จะมีท่วงทำนองและเนื้อหาของเพลงฟังดูน่ารักแบบเด็ก ๆ แต่ก็ยังไม่วายมีคนเขียนบทความวิจารณ์เพลงนี้ในปี 1964 ว่ามีนัยแฝงเกี่ยวกับกัญชา โดยอ้างถึงชื่อเพลง คำว่า Puff หมายถึง การพ่นควัน , Dragon อิงคำว่า Draggin’ ที่อาจจะหมายถึง การสูดควันเข้าไปก็ได้ ส่วนชื่อ Jacky Paper ไปเกี่ยวโยงกับการม้วนกระดาษ ซึ่งน่าจะหมายถึงการยัดไส้กัญชาในมวนบุหรี่ (หรือเปล่า)

อาจเพราะฝรั่งเป็นคนช่างคิด ช่างเปรียบเทียบ บางเรื่อง เราเห็นว่าไม่น่าเป็นประเด็น แต่เขาสามารถนำมาโยงกันได้อย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ โดยอาศัยการเล่นคำในภาษาของเขาเอง ทั้งที่ บางที คนแต่งเองก็ไม่ได้คิดลึกขนาดนั้น หรือไม่ก็อีกที หาเรื่องวิจารณ์เพลงนี้ให้ได้ แม้จะไม่มีอะไรให้ต้องพูดถึงไปในแง่ลบเลยก็ตาม เพราะเพลงน่ารัก ฟังสบาย ๆ แบบนี้ เน้นไปที่กลุ่มเด็กเล็ก ซึ่งหาเพลงแนวนี้ฟังได้ค่อนข้างยาก เนื่องจากเพลงส่วนใหญ่ในท้องตลาดจะเน้นกลุ่มวัยรุ่นเสียมากกว่า

ฉันได้ยินทำนองเพลงนี้มาตั้งแต่วัยรุ่น เนื่องจากมีนักแต่งเพลงไทย นำเอาทำนองเพลงนี้มาใส่เนื้อไทย โดยให้ชัยรัตน์ เทียบเทียม นักร้องเพลงโฟล์คยุคหนัง “วัยอลวน” เป็นผู้ขับร้อง ตั้งชื่อเพลงว่า “ยับ” เนื้อหาต่างจากต้นฉบับสิ้นเชิง เพราะเพลงไทยเน้นไปเรื่องความรักใคร่ของหนุ่มสาว ต่อมา ฉันได้ยินเพลง “Puff, the Magic Dragon” จึงได้รู้ว่า เพลง “ยับ” ขอยืมทำนองเพลงนี้มาใช้

เข้าใจว่า “Puff, the Magic Dragon” คงถูกนำไปสอนให้เด็กในโรงเรียนมานานแล้ว และน่าจะยังนำมาสอนให้เด็กร้องอยู่ เพราะดูจากในคลิป เด็ก ๆ ทั้งในอดีตและปัจจุบัน ร้องท่อนฮุคได้อย่างพร้อมเพรียงกัน ทั้งรุ่นปู่ย่าตายาย พี่ป้าน้าอา ลูกหลานเหลน ดูแล้วมีความสุขค่ะ

และแม้เพลง “Puff, the Magic Dragon” จะมีเรื่องราวที่แสดงความสัมพันธ์ฉันท์เพื่อนระหว่างคนกับสัตว์ และบรรยายถึงความสุขจากการได้เล่นแบบเด็ก ๆ แต่ก็จบลงเศร้ามาก ฉันจินตนาการตามเนื้อเพลงตอนท้าย ยังอดน้ำตาซึมไม่ได้ ความพลัดพรากนี่เป็นทุกข์จริง ๆ นะ
