need เป็นได้ทั้งกริยาช่วยและกริยาแท้

1. เมื่อใช้เป็นกริยาแท้ need + to +V
1.You need to water the flowers.คุณจำเป็นต้องรดน้ำต้นไม้

2.เมื่อใช้เป็นกริยาช่วยในกรณีที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยาช่วย มักจะใช้ในรูปปฏิเสธ คือ need not (รูปย่อคือ needn't) + กริยาช่อง 1 และ do not need to (หรือ don't need to), does not need to (หรือ doesn't need to) did not need to (หรือ didn't need to) + กริยาช่อง 1 ซึ่งแปลว่า ไม่จำเป็นต้อง... (จึงไม่ได้ทำ) เช่น

You need not go with them. (ดังนั้นจึงไม่ได้ไป) She didn't need to quit. (ดังนั้นจึงไม่ได้ลาออก)

3. การใช้ ::needn't + have +V3:: แสดงถึงการกระทำที่ไม่จำเป็นต้องทำในอดีตแต่ทำไปแล้ว

I got up at 5 am. On Saturday but I needn’t have done that because I didn’t go to work on Sunday

4. needn't+v1 = ไม่จำเป็นต้อง
May I go now? (ฉันต้องไปตอนนี้หรือเปล่า)
No, You needn't go now. (คุณไม่จำเป็นต้องไปตอนนี้)

5.need กับwant แตกต่างกันอย่างไร
want = ต้องการ
need = จำเป็นต้องมี

want" ใช้ในประโยคที่มีความหมายว่าคุณ "ต้องการ" สิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งสิ่ง ๆ นี้อาจจะเป็นสิ่งที่คุณ "จำเป็น" หรือไม่ก็ได้ แต่คุณก็ "ต้องการ" มัน

ส่วน "need" ให้ในประโยคที่มีความหมายว่าคุณ "จำเป็น" ที่จะต้องมีสิ่งหนึ่ง หรือ ต้องทำสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งสิ่ง ๆ นั้นอาจจะเป็นสิ่งที่คุณ "ต้องการ" หรือไม่ก็ได้ เช่น

I need a toilet. I can't hold it anymore. Please tell me where the toilet is.

1 ถ้าเป็น verbช่วย ใช้เหมือน verb ช่วยทั่วๆไป คือ ไม่ต้องเติม -s หรือ -ed ที่ need และตามด้วย infinitive ไม่มี to, ใช้เฉพาะในประโยคคำถามและปฏิเสธหรือกึ่งปฏิเสธ

- She need not go so early, need she?
- You need not do your assignment.
- Need you bring so much baggage?
- She asked whether she need go.

2 ถ้าเป็นกริยาหลัก ต้องตามด้วย infinitive มี to เหมือนกริยาหลักทั่วไป เพื่อไม่ให้มีกริยาซ้อนกริยาในประโยคเดียวกัน
- She said she needed to see a doctor.
- You do not need to see a doctor.
- Farmers are needing rain for their rice fields.

3. กรณีประธานของประโยคไม่ได้ทำเอง หรือ กรณีถูกกระทำ

# ประธาน + need + to be + V.3
# ประธาน + need + V.ing

ใช้ในความหมายซ่อมแซมดูแล
- My house needs to be repainted.
- My house needs repainting.

สำหรับรูป ปฏิเสธของ need ในรูปอดีตมี 2 แบบ คือ

1)การใช้ needn't + have +V3 แสดงถึงการกระทำที่ไม่จำเป็นต้องทำในอดีตแต่ทำไปแล้ว

2)didn’t need to+v1 แสดงเหตุการณ์ในอดีตที่ไม่จำเป็นต้องทำจึงไม่ได้ทำ
