Chapter 1 :21-26

For to me life is Christ, and death is gain.

If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose.
23
I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, (for) that is far better.
24
Yet that I remain (in) the flesh is more necessary for your benefit.
25
And this I know with confidence, that I shall remain and continue in the service of all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
26
so that your boasting in Christ Jesus may abound on account of me when I come to you again.

21 ข้าพเจ้าคิดว่าการมีชีวิตอยู่ก็คือ พระคริสเจ้า และการตายก็เป็นกำไร
22 หากการมีชีวิตอยู่ในโลกนี้เป็นโอกาสให้ข้าพเจ้าทำงานได้ผลแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าก็ไม่รู้ว่าจะเลือกสิ่งใด
23 ข้าพเจ้ารู้สึกลังเลคือ ปราถนาจะพ้นจากชีวิตนี้ไปเพื่อ อยู่กับพระคริสเจ้า ซึ่งจะเป็นการดีกว่ามาก
24 แต่การมีชีวิตอยู่ในโลกนี้ต่อไปก็จำเป็นอย่างยิ่งสำหรับท่านทั้งหลาย
25 เมื่อข้าพเจ้ามั่นเช่นนี้แล้วข้าพเจ้าก็รู้ว่าข้าพเจ้าจะอยู่ต่อไปและอยู่เคียงข้างท่านทุกคน เพื่อช่วยให้ท่านก้าวหน้าและชื่นชมในความเชื่อ
26เพื่อท่านทั้งหลาย จะได้ภูมิใจพระคริสตเยซูยิ่งขึ้น เพราะข้าพเจ้าได้กลับมาอยู่กลับท่านอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

ความหมาย

ความตายเป็นวิธีหนึ่งเพื่อจะไปอยู่กับพระคริสเจ้า (ดู รม 14:8 คส 3:3 1 ธส 5:10) แต่เปาโลไม่ได้อธิบายว่า "ซึ่งเป็นการดีกว่ามาก" ที่จะได้จากความตายนั้นคืออะไร อีกทั้งไม่ได้อธิบายด้วยกว่า การอยู่กับพระคริสเจ้าบนความตายนั้น "เป็นการดีกว่ามากอย่างไร" บางทีเปาโลอาจคิดถึง ความสัมพันธ์ใกล้ชิดกับพระคริสเจ้า ซึ่งเป็นไปไม่ได้ในขณะที่ยั่งมีชีวิตในร่างกายเช่นเดียวกับใน 2 คร 5:8 เชิงอรรถ d เปาโลพูดเช่นนี้คงคิดว่า การอยู่ " กับพระคริสเจ้า" นั้นเกิดขึ้นทันทีหลังจากความตาย โดยไม่มีช่วงเวลาที่ต้องรอคอยการกลับคืนชีพพร้อมกันของมวลมนุษย์
