สัมภาษณ์ราฟาจาก RN ค่ะ Rafa Nadal: It is very sad for me not being able to go to Copenhagen. I have to continue with my tennis schedule which makes it impossible for me to go to Denmark.
Nevertheless, I will still support Madrids Olympic bid spiritually and I take this opportunity to thank Madrids Mayor and the Sports Secretary of Defense for always counting on me to support this project.
I know what a great job theyve done and I know we deserve to win.
Madrid, I wish you all the best and I too feel something special in my heart!!
After weeks of wondering whether Rafael Nadal, the worlds No. 2 player, would withdraw from the 2009 China Open due to injury, all questions were answered when Nadal arrived in Beijing earlier this morning.
Nadal, flanked by four security guards, waved at a horde of young, mostly female fans and signed a few autographs before heading to a waiting China Open car.
The future of Nadals 2009 season has been in limbo for the last few weeks as an injury in his knee forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon in July and a new right abdominal injury plagued him following his performance at the U.S. Open in August.
But the Spanish star seemed optimistic, pointing out his successes in August at the Cincinnati tournament, even though he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal match. He also seemed eager to play again, mentioning prolific success in Beijing, once as the China Open champion in 2005 and again as the Olympic gold medalist in 2008.
A year has passed since his gold medal performance in Beijing, and today, as the Olympic Committee reveals its selection for the host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics, Nadal offered his support for Madrid, a candidate city in his home country of Spain. Madrid deserves this, he said.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, world No. 4, arrived in Beijing Thursday and practiced in center court at the National Tennis Center. Djokovic played for almost an hour and a half, hitting groundstrokes and playing a mock match with Croat Ivan Ljubicic.
Djokovic is looking for his first finalist appearance in the China Open, but he has also found success in Beijing, earning the bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics, losing to Nadal in the semifinal match. Both players begin play early next week in the 2009 China Open main draw.
Other players arriving in Beijing earlier Friday morning were Tommy Robredo and Nicolas Amalgro, both Spanish players. Serena and Venus Williams of the United States are scheduled to land in Beijing Friday afternoon.
