Temple and Palace in the Old Capital City

Wat Naprameru

This is Wat Naprameru , This temple is situated near the bank of Klong Muang (The city canal) or the Lopburi river , was constructed during the reign of king Rama DmibodiⅡ , the tenth king of Ayutthaya dynasty. It was the place used for agreed on the peace issue on Chang puark war in 1563 between tabengchaveti , who is the king of Burma and Somdej Phramahachakraphat , who is the fifteenth king of Ayutthaya

In front of you is the Ubosoth or the ordinary hall of Wat Naprameru , the only temple in Ayutthaya that escaped the destruction of the Burmesed when Ayutthaya fell in 1767 A.D. , because this temple might have been used as the headquarter of the Burmese army while Ayutthaya was under siege. ‘cause this temple is situated outside city wall on the other side of the Lopburi river opposite the royal palace

This temple is a good example of temple of Ayutthaya . the early Ayutthaya architectural style is shown in the narrow , oblong shape of the windows and in the presence of large pillars inside the ordinary hall. The most beautifull part of this temple. Probably, is the garble-end showing a design of Vishnu on the garuda surrounded by celestials. The whole design is made of gilt carved wood.Shall we go inside and have a look at The Principle Buddha Image.

This dim light passing through the long , narrow slits on the walls really gives you the feeling of peacefulness. And this kind of Buddha Image is called พระพุทธนิมิตวิชิตมารโมลี ศรีสรรเพชญ์ บรมไตรโลกนาถ or a crowned Buddha Image , which is ปางมารวิชัย.this image is a sauk 5 inches wide measured at the lap of 3 wa.this one of largest crowned image cast in bronze.this image could have been built in the reign of King Prasat Thong, the 25th reign of Ayutthaya , who built Wat Chai Wathanaram as a member of crowned Buddha Images in the same style as this one were found in the gallery of the temple.

I’ll show you another Buddha Image belonging to the Dvaravati period,Luang pho Kantharat which lasted from the 6th to 11th century , before Sukhothai period , so there are only 5 of them left in Thailand.two can be found at Wat phra pathom chedi in nakhon pathom. One is kept at National Museum in Bangkok and another one is kept at Chao Sam Phraya National Museum in Ayutthaya . All of them are made of white stone . Except for this one is made of green stone.

And Buddha Image of the Dvaravadi period were sculpled out of stone. All of the 5 imagers.I have just told you about including This one are seated images whith two feet on the ground. They usually have large hair-curls,connected eye-brows,protruding eyes and thick lips.

Wat Chai Wathanaram

This temple is located outside the city wall on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River.you’l have a good perspective of the temple when you look at it from the other side of the river bank.

This temple was built in 1630 A.D. in the reign of King Prasat Thong. The beginning of the golden age of the late Ayutthaya.this side had been the residence of king’s mother, to mark his own reign after the king had defeated Angkoor or Muang Phra Nakorn , the center of the khmea empire. This temple was built following the plan of the Angkor Wat in Combodia. However , the architectural style was adapted to suit the local ideal. For example the principal monument , which is a prang , was made of brick and stucco covered with sheets of copper instead of using sand stone. Building a prang from bricks was faster than from stone blocks. We can say this temple is a reflection of Angkor Wat on the bank of the Chao Phraya River.

Its constructing pattern was different from other temples. There will be a huge prang as a center surrounded by smaller ones. All of these were the most important part of temple called "Phuttavas" (the domain of temple) located at the front part of temple and "Sunkkavas" (the domain of monk) located on the back part.

For the Congregation hall or Ubosoth , In the late-Ayutthaya Period, Ordination halls were larger and were located in the foreground to the east to allow more space for religious functions. The principal Buddha image in the Ordination Hall is seated in meditation posture. Made of stucco with sandstone core, it is lacquered and gilted. The head of this statue was recently made on a photograph of its original which had been stolen long time ago. Overall were surrounded by 3 rows of brick wall. The plan of this temple reflects the belief in the Universe .The presiding prang this one was built from bricks , as high as a 9 storied building with foundations of bricks, sand and clay .

So The presiding prang this signifies Sumeru Mount ,the universe center . And the four surrounding prangs were four continents where mankind was born. The outer gallery signifies the universe wall. And the main prang is surrounded by the gallery. At each of the eight cardinal and subcardinal point of gallery there is a meru or the eight satellite stupas . Can you see?? There are eight of them , that’s never found anywhere eles , there 8 stupas were located around the presiding prang, linked by a long gallery. The outer wall of each meru is decorated with stucco designs depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life.Let’s go inside the gallery…

These 12 decorations outside the 8 stupa must be read clockwise , to learn about Buddha’s life.At the four corners of the gallery there are Buddha Images , all of which are damaged. They were crowned Buddha Images made of brick and stucco in the same style as the principle Buddha image of Wat Naphramaru. And were widely built in the reign of King Prasatthong (in about the 17th century A.D.) There are 12 Buddha images in this style placed in each Meru of the temple. They were all gilded.

This temple served as the cremation site of member of the royal family during the late Ayutthaya period. It was also the burial ground for Prince Dhammadhibate , the great poet of Ayutthaya. He was the son of King Boromakot.which was the rank next to the king in importance. The prince was found to have and affair with Chao Fa Sangwan , who was one of the ladies of the court. Both of them were sentenced to death and their bodies were buried somewhere in this temple ground. His death led to the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 A.D. , as his younger brother , who later became the 34 th reign , was a weak person and had no interest in the state affairs.

The Prang Noi has a long porch atits front. Its plain reflects that of a Prang of the early. Ayutthaya period, but it architectural characteristies and decorated stucco designs are the art work of the late Ayutthaya period in about the late 17th early 18th Century A.D. It's called by the local people San Chao Mae Wat Dusit.
