First day I went to Orientation in L&D , they let me to be observer and do scavenger hunt (look for all the supply and equiptment ,where they are) they will give a list for the new staff to check off ,we all will have one nurse to be preceptor,we have problem will go direct to that person and Preceptor and Head Nurse will evaluate our performance to see if we pass to work in the Unit, L&D Nurse have to do the blood work and start IV ,so you should be good in it , when Pt admit you will responsible from admit, start IV ,Blood work and stay with pt until she del , help with pushing and if she need Cesarean Section ,you will go to the OR and be cerculate nurse, if Pt del ,you will be the one to stay with mom and baby and be able to help Peditrician do intubate baby when it need, so all L&D nurse must have CPR condition , when I cerculate with first Del ,I see the nurse alone with Obstetrician we have to run around the room help MD and when baby came have to take care baby ,I feel it overwhlem and wonder Can I do it ,am I going to survived this unit ? They let new nurse stay on orientation for 1 month ,train at sceeening room (first pt come to check before admit) Labor &delivery Room , OR ,RR my unit is a high risk Ob, when we done with orientation we should be able to take care pt ,and read fetal monitor ,take care pt with pitocin , Mggso4 ect and know the level of important lab work ,is sound scary but once we already work ,we all can do it and will learn from it then you will develope more skill ,some people like ,some move to other unit ,becaue L&D unit is always busy and most of the time will not have break or Lunch because we work with 2 people 's life ,so emergency will come up anytime ,for me .I love it and happy to work with mother and baby.
