The Secondary School Curriculum
Years 7-11: Students follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme. This builds on the work of the Elementary School (the IB Primary Years Programme) and prepares students for entry to the IB Diploma Programme (Years 12 and 13) a universally recognised and highly academic course which allows students to gain entry to universities and colleges world-wide.
The other aims of the MYP are to give students
A sound knowledge base across a wide range of subjects
The ability to find and process information
A holistic view of human understanding
Skill in communicating
An awareness of their role in society
The Middle Years Programme is broadly-based: students must study their first language (Language A), a second language (Language B), Science, Mathematics, Humanities, Physical Education, Technology, and Visual or Performing Arts.
On successful completion of the final two years of the MYP students receive an MYP Certificate and a Record of Achievement from the International Baccalaureate Organization.
The combination of academic rigour and flexibility, which is the hallmark of the Middle Years Programme, means that it:
Lays a substantial foundation for entry to the Diploma Programme
Eases the transition into both national and international systems of education
Years 12 and 13: Students may follow either the full IB Diploma course or a modified IB Certificate course.
The Diploma Programme is a very effective preparation for education at Universities and Colleges throughout the world. It encompasses the in-depth study of six major subjects (three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level), a Theory of Knowledge course, an Extended Essay, which is research-based, and participation in Creativity, Action and Service activities. In addition students follow the schools own Lifeskills and Physical Education programmes. Student attainment within the Diploma Programme is ultimately measured by means of coursework submitted to the IB and a full set of written examinations in the second year of the course.
The progress of students in all year levels is internally assessed against published criteria. Parents are kept informed of progress through interim reports (twice a year), full written reports (twice a year), parent/teacher conferences and information evenings.
Additional important features of the Secondary School are its Student Support Services; its extensive sports and after-school activities programme (NIST is an active member SEASAC - the South East Asia Sports and Activities Conference); a Performing and Visual Arts programme and its English as a Second Language programme.
