What's the future for Asian monarchies?
Are they in decline or are they a source of strength?
Thailand marks the 60th anniversary of its king's accession to the throne. King Bhumibol - the world's longest-reigning monarch - enjoys immense devotion among Thais.
Not so popular is the King of Nepal. After massive street protests this April, King Gyanendra was forced to restore parliament and quit politics, deepening the trauma left by the massacre of the Royal family five years ago.
What remains of the Asian monarchies' legacy? Does the future belong to them? Do they have the authority of a unifier and protector of the nation? Send us your comments.

I have never seen a country show so much heartfelt love and affection for a leader as Thais are showing for their king. On Friday everyone I saw wore yellow to pay their respects and the evening was lit with a sea of candles as the whole nation congratulated him. People tell me of how proud they are of their king and how he makes them proud to be Thai, he truly is the unifier and protector of the Thai people.

First allow me to state that I am an American who has been living in The Kingdom of Thailand for more than 6 years and am married to a wonderful Thai lady for the same length of time. I am proud to live in Thailand and under the rule of His Majesty the King! I too hold Him dear to my heart. (continued...)

For Thais, their feelings toward King Bhumibol are more than love and beyond respect.
King Bhumibol has won the Thais hearts not by his inherited but love and devotion to his own nation. Throughout his reign, he has worked hard to bring Thais to a better living, eased all crises Thailand has faced, and patiently guided his people to a right attitude for living in this fast growing economy, the so call self-sufficient economy.
Thailand could not have come this far with out its Kings.

I live in Thailand, and I'm wearing a yellow shirt today (June 9, 2006). Our Thai King is a wonderful man, a saint, comparable to the Dalai Lama or the Pope. He is an inspiration to us all, even those who, like me, were born elsewhere. He is our national father when we need one.

To understand the future of Asian monarchies, we must first understand Asian society.
The twelve years I spent living and working in Thailand taught me not to judge Thai society by western standards. I also witnessed first hand and came to understand the devotion Thais have for their King.
Rather than discuss the future of Asian Monarchs, perhaps we might consider exactly what it is HRH Bhumibol might teach western leaders about public service.
Our own leaders have much to learn.
