Did the earth move for you? An earthquake of at least 4.3 on the Richter scale shook parts of Kent at 8.19am on Saturday 28th April. The tremor lasted a few seconds and was felt as far away as Esssex and Suffolk. According to the US Geological survey, the epicentre was measured as being 15 miles south of Canterbury and at a depth of 6.2 miles.
Seismograph of the Kent earthquake. In 1580, Kent also suffered from a large earthquake. St Peter's Church in Broadstairs, and churches in Sandwich were damaged. Dover Castle lost part of its wall and some of the cliff was damaged. In 1884, another quake made the church bells ring at Westgate On Sea.
