UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY

As an associated institution of the United Nations University (UNU), ITC contributes to the UNU mission, which is "to contribute, through research and capacity building, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems that are the concern of the United Nations, its Peoples and Member States".

The cooperation between ITC and the United Nations University is directed at developing and carrying out a joint programme on capacity building in disaster management and in land administration, and at disseminating knowledge on these and directly related issues.

The programme activities are accommodated as follows:- Centre for Spatial Analysis and Disaster Risk Management- School for Land Administration Studies.

PhD research is often carried out in the ‘sandwich’ model. Preparation and final reporting – the first and last portion of the programme – are carried out in Delft, while actual research is done in the fellow’s home country, under co-supervision of a local institute. Regular contacts with the promotor are maintained through visits and long-distance communication. This enables researchers to employ solutions directly to problems in their geographical region.

Rotary Scholarships for Water and Sanitation Professionals

Rotary and the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education have teamed up to tackle the world’s water and sanitation crisis by increasing the number of trained professionals to devise, plan, and implement solutions in developing and emerging countries. Through this partnership, The Rotary Foundation will provide grants to Rotary clubs and districts to select and sponsor 8 students each year.

Scholarships Available for Masters in Sanitary Engineering

30 MSc scholarships in Sanitary Engineering are funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and will be awarded to students who wish to study the MSc programme in Urban Water and Sanitation.

Better management of water for food and energy security, in a sustainable and equitable way, in synergy with natural ecosystems and compatible with the respective socio-economic context.

Information & Knowledge Systems

Managing the information cycle of data aquisition, modelling, forecasting, optimisation and knowledge management supporting decisions related to water.

Tailor-made training

UNESCO-IHE tailor-made training is designed for clients whose staff require tuition on specific topics or seek to develop a common knowledge base to address future challenges. The focus of the courses may be technical, managerial, strategic or operational, depending on the client’s priorities.

UNESCO-IHE is making efforts to make water education more accessible and affordable to increasing numbers of students. One way of doing this is the development of joint programmes with partner institutions.

The Dutch Expertise Network for Flood Protection (ENW) and TU Delft have organized a post-flood field investigation in cooperation with Thai partners. The team investigated damages due to the floods and a number of failures of dykes and structures in the Lower Chao Phraya river basin and the flood defence systems of industrial estates around Bangkok.
