Akihito

At Lake Yu
The mountain ash
Has turned red
By the roadside.
Autumn has certainly arrived
At the shore of Lake Yu.

Unawares
The larch leaves
Have turned yellow.
So softly on them
The rain is falling.

At Yakushiji

Verdant is the wood
Of Yakushiju,
Wherein towers
The three-storied pagoda,
Its vermilion now faded.

Fireflies over the Paddy Fields

A gentle night breeze
Blows over the paddy fields
And flitting fireflies,
Mirrored in the water,
Become twinkles stars.

The capital in Fresh Verdure

The morning sunlight
Brightens the row of trees
Fresh in their verdure
By the roadsides
Of the capital.

In Edinburgh

On the surface
Of the deserted lake,
A swan was alone.
As I lingered there,
It drew near to me.

Woods

Having returned from my journey,
I sojourn in Karuizawa,
Where the woods
In autumn tints overflow
With the atmosphere of my homeland.

Recalling the United Kingdom

Since I went
To the United Kingdom
For the coronation,
How quickly
The one year has passed!

How beautiful it must be
At this time of the year!
Occasionally,
I remember
London in early summer.

The Autumn sky

The sky of autumn
Spreads over the mountains,
Peak after peak,
Extending far beyond them,
Unmarred by any cloud.

Fire

As the fires
Quietly burn at Shinkaden,
In a low tone
I hear the singing voices echo
To the strains of the koto.

In Hokkaido

Out in the suburbs,
Leaves of trees are light green,
Making me feel
As if we were driving
Through mountain of Honshu.

Having passed over
A mountain in hazy rain
I come to a vally,
Where a mining town
Is crowded with houses.

Sand hills,
Thick with sukashiyuri
And hamanasu, roll on.
Calm and white is
The sea of Okhotsk.

Window

Seen from the window
Leaves of mokkoku,
Shining white in the light
Of the wintry sun,
Sway in the breeze.

In Thailand

Looking down
On forest after forest
I see the single thread
Of the Mekong flowing
White and glittering.

Together with
The King and Queen of Thailand
It is towards
Avillage of the tribe of Miao
That we are setting forth.

By the mountain pass
Leading to the village
Of the tribe of Miao,
My wife found
Tsurifume flowers.

Walking down hill
Enjoying mountain flowers
In bloom along the pass,
We came to a hamlet
With all the trees burnt down.

Near Lake Chuzenji

Swinmming upstream
In a brook which flows
Into the lake,
A trout takes a rest
Under a bridge.

A Slope

Along the slope of Mabuni
Thirty years have flowed
In this time of peace
I feel that there is nothing
So precious as life.

As I continue
My talks with her,
I become aware
That, in my heart
A window is opening.

Michiko

Spring Sky

As I look up
At the plum blossoms
My face turns upward
To the gentle sky of spring.
Becoming tinged with colour.

Earth
Awakened at midnight
Suddenly I feel a fondness
For the smell of the earth in spring,
While I listen to frosty leaves
Scattering all night long.

A Flower-drift

Stretching both arms out
To to sky, trying to catch
The cherry blossom petals
Snowdrifting in the wind;
My child, too, dancing in the spring.

On the New Palace

Happiness wells up
In my heart
As I look up at the Emperor
Standing to greet the people
From the high, newly built balcony.

Withered Grass

On the vast meadow
Ruffled with withered grass
In late autumn, I've come
With my little one-amusing ourselves
Stepping on each other's shadow.

On the Birth of Princess Sayako

Within the room
Where the twilight creeps
So softly in,
Like a fragile petal lying
Lo! my little daughter sleeps.

Meiji Shrine’s Golden Anniversary

The light-blue sky
That I am now gazing at!
Is this not the scenery of the heart
Which His Majesty
Wished for us in his poem?

Child

In the garden
Where the fragrance
Of summer grass floats
So gently there falls a star
Into the eyes of my child.

The Milky Way in Winter

In the wintry sky
The Milky Way lets flow its stream of milk.
Oh, to think of you as still a babe
Soundly asleep
Under a sky like this.

Magnolias

Upon uplifted petals
Of half-blow magnolia blossoms
Floating in the sky,
The moon continues
To shed her gentle beam.

Winter Haze

Those white flowers
In the tea fields of Saga
Must be quietly blooming
In the misty haze
Of Winter.

The Morning Star

Oh, this tranquility
Of the garden at dawn!
The morning star abouve
Shed a soft, clear light
In the cloudless sky.

The Autumn Equinox

At last,
The autumn ezuinox
Is drawing near.
How quiet is the mountain,
Capped by a wisp of white cloud!

Higurashi

There was a gentle look
In my daughter’s eyes
As she listened to the higurashi,
Murmuring that she loves
The fall of evening.

New Year’s Eve

For a long time I shall remember
The silence of night
Of this special year,
When my son is away
In another land.

Journey

The ship of sails
Waits in the moolit harbour
For the young mariners,
About to set out a journey,
Seeking the sea breeze.

Digging for Clams at Low Tide

As the years pass,
Memories of the sandy beach
At low tide
Where we played, digging for clams,
Linger and grow.

Thunder

I recall those days
Of early childhood
When, in the countryside
I would count the moments between
The flash of lightning and the thunderclap.
