Teacher Development

Like other careers, being a teacher needs development. Teacher development is a process of gradually becoming a better teacher. There are many areas that teacher can develop. For example, teacher may develop teaching skills, language skills, and communication skills. Teacher development is a life-long process. As new things happen all the time, teachers must prepare to catch up these changes. During this process, teachers grow intellectually, experientially, and attitudinally. These three aspects of development should occur simultaneously. The first one, intellectual growth, means teachers gain new ideas, broaden perspective, and raise awareness of the need for change. The second one, experiential growth, means teachers learn more from their experience of implementing new ideas. And the last one, attitudinal growth, means teachers change their beliefs or attitudes after they try out new ideas.

To be a developed teacher, the teacher goes through four stages of teacher development. The first stage is the undeveloped state that the teacher is unaware of the need for change. In the second stage, the teacher becomes aware of the need for change. Then, the third stage, the teacher implements a plan for change and is aware of this change. The final stage, the change becomes second nature. Therefore, the teacher is familiar with change and change continually for development.

Teacher development is an essential process in teacher’s life. Teachers develop themselves in order to gain more understanding of themselves and their teaching, raise their aware of teaching, and develop themselves continually.

There are numerous techniques that teachers can use for development, such as reading books to gain new ideas, attending seminars or conferences, observation, and writing diaries. Among these techniques, observation can provide useful information for teacher and teaching development if it is done through focused observation. This means the observer knows what to look for. So the critical points are identified. The observer can be senior or junior teachers, friends, or even the teacher himself. Giving feedback is also important because judgmental feedback may hurt feeling even it give clear comment. Besides peer observation, teacher may observe himself or herself by using a video recorder and diaries. Diaries also provide useful information because the teachers reflect their opinions and write them down. This helps them see their thoughts and progress clearer.

Overall, the teacher development is an essential process in teachers’ lives.
