Brilliant Mac's Dictionary

I thought of blogging about Mac's Dictionary for quite a while, but I had been swamped with work. Just recently, I finally put my research proposal together, and during the process, I had used Mac's Dictionary countless times. I love it! I must admit my initial feeling was just the opposite. As a former Windows user, I was addicted to Babylon, a Windows-based dictionary application which allows users to right-click on, rather than type in, a vocab anywhere on the screen for translation. I couldn't live without it because it's so handy for those including me who had to read/write a lot in English (and of course, in other languages). Babylon provided English-English as well as English-Thai translations from various dictionaries including Wikipedia, and in different fields of study.

When I started using my Macbook, my concern on the lack of Babylon was huge. I googled and found Babylon for Mac. I was hesitant to get one of my own because it didn't received rave reviews. The quick solution at the time was to continue running VMWare and Windows XP alongside Mac OS. My common applications included Adobe Acrobat for reading, MS Word for writing, and Firefox for web browsing. I just ended up using them on the Windows side so that I could use Babylon. The Mac OS did serve me lightly with Mail, iCal, and Address Book.

Shall we put the matter of Dictionary in a nutshell? Here are the things that I am impressed with and things that I hope Mac will improve in the next version of Dictionary.
1. Dictionary has a few, but very genius, dictionaries including English-English, Thesaurus, Apple, Wikipedia, and add-on English-Thai (downloadable for free at //www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/productivity_tools/thaidictionary.html). They are not redundant and sufficient to serve my purpose.
2. Dictionary's English-English translation is accompanied with "Origin," providing the vocab root. I find this feature so conducive to learning and building firm ground of vocab roots.
3. Examples of vocab usage are an added bonus to Mac's Dictionary. As a non-native English speaker/writer, it is more than life-saver to have handy the sentence structure in different contexts, and preposition that go along with the vocab.
4. Dictionary behaves pretty much like Babylon (a single right-clicking on a vocab for translation) except that it works only on certain applications developed on cocoa framework such as Preview, Safari, Mail, and the list of Mac applications goes on! Firefox was not one among them, sadly! On those working applications, only vocabs in plain text (excluding inline links, and those in title and menu bars) get translated. I hope that Apple will do something about it in their next version to make Dictionary work on any application and anywhere on the screen!

ผมเพิ่งจะผ่านการเขียน research proposal มาหมาด ๆ ครับ อ่าน academic papers/articles เยอะครับ ศัพท์แปลก ๆ ก็มาเรื่อย ๆ เวลาเขียน proposal บางครั้งก็มีงง ๆ บ้างนะครับจะวางโครงสร้างประโยคยังไงดี ใช้ preposition ตัวไหน ก็ได้เจ้า Dictionary ช่วยเอาไว้เยอะครับ

เมื่อก่อนตอนที่ยังใช้ Windows XP บน Dell เครื่องเก่าของผม ผมก็ใช้ Babylon เป็นโปรแกรมแปลศัพท์ตัวนึงครับ แค่เอาเม้าส์คลิกขวาไปที่ศัพท์ตัวไหน ตรงไหนก็ได้ครับ ทั้งที่ title bar หรือว่า menu bar แม้แต่ task bar ก็ได้หมดครับ มันจะดูดศัพท์ตัวนั้นแล้วก็แปลศัพท์ให้เลยครับ ใช้ได้โดยที่ไม่ต้องต่อเน็ตด้วยครับ นี่ก็เป็นเหตุผลหลักนะครับที่ตอนที่ผมใช้ Macbook ช่วงแรก ๆ ผมต้องเปิด Windows XP ผ่านทาง VMWare ครับ เพราะผมต้องใช้ Babylon ทุกวันครับ ผมชอบเรียนรู้ศัพท์ใหม่ไปเรื่อย ๆ นะครับ จะไม่ค่อยข้ามไปเท่าไหร่ ศึกษารูปประโยคแล้วก็วิธีการใช้ด้วยครับ ทีนี้พอใช้ Mac OS ไปเรื่อย ๆ บวกกับผมก็เริ่มใช้โปรแกรมสำหรับ Mac มากขึ้นครับ มันก็เลยกลายเป็นว่าเปิด Windows มาเพื่อ Babylon อย่างเดียว ฟังดูมันไม่ค่อยคุ้มกับการเปิดซักเท่าไหร่ เล่นเครื่องไปมาก็เจอเจ้า Dictionary ครับ อืมมมมมม คลิกขวาได้เหมือนกันแฮะ แต่มันใช้ไม่ได้กับ Firefox for Mac แล้วก็ Office for Mac ก็ไม่ได้เหมือนกันครับ ก็สรุปว่าโปรแกรมที่ไม่ใช่ของ Mac ที่ไม่ได้พัฒนาโดยใช้ cocoa framework ก็จะใช้ Dictionary ไม่ได้ครับ

ถ้าเทียบ Dictionary กับ Babylon แล้วก็มีข้อดี ข้อด้อยคนละอย่างครับ แต่โดยรวมแล้วผมชอบ Dictionary มากกว่าละครับตอนนี้
1. ตัวแปลภาษาก็มี อังกฤษ-อังกฤษ Thesaurus ศัพท์ของ Apple แล้วก็จาก Wikipedia ผมหาไปหามาก็ได้ อังกฤษ-ไทยมาด้วยครับ โลดได้ฟรีครับที่ //www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/productivity_tools/thaidictionary.html ผมว่ามันตรงที่ dictionary ที่มีมันไม่เยอะเกินไปเหมือนของ Babylon มันก็เลยไม่มีการแปลซ้ำไปซ้ำมาในหน้าต่างเดียวกันครับ จริง ๆ ใน Babylon ก็ตั้งค่าได้อยู่ครับ
2. สำหรับตัวแปลอังกฤษ-อังกฤษนี่ดีตรงที่มี Origin ด้วยครับ บอกว่าคำศัพท์มันมีรากศัพท์มาจากอะไร ตรงนี้ล่ะครับที่ทำให้ผมต่อยอดได้ เรียนรู้รากศัพท์มากขึ้นมันทำให้เราเจอศัพท์อื่น ๆ ก็จะพอเดาความหมายได้ง่ายขึ้น
3. นอกจาก Origin แล้ว ตัวอย่างที่ให้มาพร้อมกับคำแปลถือว่ามีประโยชน์มากครับ สำหรับผม ผมว่าตัวอย่างดีมากครับ ได้ทั้งรูปประโยค แล้วก็คำบุพบทที่ใช้ร่วมกันกับคำศัพท์ เยี่ยมครับ
4. ข้อสุดท้ายนี่ไม่ค่อยดีนักครับ คือใช้ไม่ได้กับโปรแกรมอื่น ๆ มันเลยไม่ถึงกับ handy ซะทีเดียวครับ ถ้าใครที่ชอบใช้ Firefox เนี่ยคงต้องสวิตช์ไปที่ Dictionary แล้วก็ต้องพิมพ์คำศัพท์เอาเองครับ แต่ผมเลือกที่จะใช้ Safari ดีกว่าครับ

Blog นี้ยาวทีเดียวเลยนะครับ ตอนแรกว่าจะเขียนสั้น ๆ นิดเดียว เขียนไปเขียนมาก็ยาวแบบนี้ครับ สรุปครับว่าชอบ Dictionary ครับ สำหรับ Mac users ทั้งหลายครับ ลองใช้ดูนะครับ
