Theres a different between being intelligence and being smart. Because the people who are being smart doesnt mean they have to be intelligence. On the other hand, people who have intellectual doesnt mean they are going to be smart. And by that, I think Smart People is such a wrong title for this movie. Because characters in this film often showed what they are good of, regardless of right or wrong, and thinking that they are superior to anybody they knew. And because of that, they became pretty unlikable. In fact, if they have something like a contest to submit your own title for this film, Obnoxious People is much more appropriate one.
Lawrence Wetherhold is miserable and a misanthrope: he's a widower, a pompous professor at Carnegie Mellow, an indifferent father to a college student and a high-school senior, and the reluctant brother of a ne'er-do-well who's come to town. A seizure and a fall send Lawrence to the emergency room where the physician, a former student of his, ends up going on a date with him. His daughter, Vanessa, lonely and friendless, whose been bonding with his brother, tries to sabotage dad and the doctor's relationship, but Lawrence is good at that without help. Is there any way these smart people can get a life? Can happiness be pursued beneath layers of irony? (Thanks, imdb. Its seem Im more and more lazy to make my own synopsis haha+)
Even though the film packed with witty and funny dialogs, but the fundamental is just simply wrong. I wouldnt say they completely abandoned moral or anything. But I think theyre looking from a wrong perspective. Smart People should have been interesting if one can see from an ordinary people's point of view, to look inside whats a deal with an intellectual one. But it didnt, because all we saw is so called smart people struggling and whining in their already blessed life. In fact, I think nothing in this film is ever going help audience to love protagonists. Even though we knew that he (and she) is going to learn some valuable lesson in the end, but in my humble opinion, he (and she) just doesn't deserves it.
So that's come to the problem, because the character that Dennis Quaid and Ellen Page played are such an obnoxious characters. And yet it worsens by the fact that they're the key role in this film. For this kind of film, Dennis Quaids character is supposed to be a loveable asshole (like he did in Great Balls of Fire!). But the more I saw it, I was kind of doubt about loveable. Because the way he treated people around him is just not very nice. And theres not enough time for an audience to appreciate his redemption moments. For Ellen, I can see a lot of Juno kind of vibe in this film (its like shes still fascinated by playing Juno MacGuff). But one think that sorely missed in Jono-like persona, is likeness. Because all I got it from her performance is only smart mouth brat that will urge you to strangle her with your bare hands.
With a little surprised in supporting roles, Sarah Jessica Parker is the best thing in this film. Her sympathy performance adds a little heart in this lifeless dramady. Her best scene occurred when she's having a second doubt in her relationship with Dennis Quiad's character. Also, Thomas Haden Church might not do something significant in this film, but he's just damn fun to watch. It reminds me one of his best performance in Alexander Paynes Sideway
Smart People may attracts some people who are fond of Woody Allen-like sharp as razor lines. But unlike his films, there's a little heart that poured into this one. It reminds me one of last year frustrating experience that I have in Noah Baumbachs Margot at the Wedding. And just like that film, Smart People is an intelligent film, but it's also dry piece of cinema that will definitely leave a bad taste after you've watched it.
reading your review, I guess the leading characters are the type that gets horror B movie-goers cheering and stomping their feet when they finally got dismembered in the most brutal way imaginable na ka (I sure did that when Paris Hilton got killed in house of wax) I'm a bit reluctant to watch this film though...cuz I'm kinda like a bit of a book smart one myself... but I'm not obnoxious, really
Where are you?
You could have brain tumor by watching this contaminated turd. Nothing in Gentlemen Broncos pays off, it’s incoherent mess, and chock-full of incredibly annoying characters. You will not only loath this movie, but it also makes you want to punch someone who responsible for this abomination in the face.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
Imagine if Akira got Live-Action treatment by... say Alfonso Cuarón, you know how awesome it might be? That’s what happened to "Fantastic Mr. Fox". Wes Anderson's auteur perfectly captured the quirkiness and blissful tone of the material. Its stop-motion technique might be a little crude and... somewhat unsophisticated, but that's the charm of it. You’ll feel like pop-up book unveiled before your eyes. This is an exceptional animation of the year.
Up in the Air is a blockbuster movie for people who think blockbuster movies are dumb, as it chock full of brilliantly written dialogue, and acting showcase for three talented actors (especially star-making turn by Anna Kendrick). But in the end, there's little to love, not so much story to chew on (plus disappointing third act), and no real connection to the meaning of human interaction as it intended to be.

I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)
Cliché-ridden plot about a bunch of annoying characters get together in one idiotic circumstance, "I Love You, Beth Cooper" is shameless exploitation & biggest insult to 80s teen flicks. It's like memorizing magic trick from internet, hoping to perform like David Copperfield. Neither sense of wonder nor magic flare happens here. Only good thing is, it makes me wanna cleanse my soul with genuine 80s teen movie night marathon.

Everybody's Fine (2009)
Meh. The movie serious lack of originality & characters development. Only Robert De Niro comes out fine in this schmaltzy, "Lifetime" movie-of-the-week plot.

Adam (2009)
A perfect companion to Mary & Max (one of the best animation of 2009), Adam is star-crossed love story (pun intended) between Adam, Asperger's Syndrome bearer, and Beth, free spirit woman. The picture wouldn’t be this intimate without stunning performance by Hugh Dancy. On the other hand, the lack of depth on why Beth would love someone like Adam, preventing me from wholeheartedly embraces her choice in the end (which is nice & perfect but requires a leap of faith). Otherwise, this is touching romantic film, which putting its feet firmly on the ground, making the world full of hope and seems nicer place to live.

The Invention of Lying (2009)
Expected to be like “Click” or “Yes Man”, where high-concept plot turned into endless gags, with moral lesson (forcefully) shoving down your throat. But "The Invention of Lying" is thinking man’s film. The whole concept is not seeing how first lying man exploits the ability. But it's about him finding the way not to lie, in order to find genuine happiness. Great stuff.

Give ‘Em Hell Malone (2009)
This is one damn frustrating experience. It’s like watching an infant trying to stand up and walk. They would take a few steps then fall their asses. In fact, kiddie film like “Bugsy Malone” has done better job paying a tribute to film noir than this borefest.

Zombieland (2009)

Looking for Eric (2009)
