The contestants were welcomed to Donglian Picture and Animation Studios by an array of colourful dancers with chiffon sleeves that fluttered in the breeze as they moved. They were then led across a courtyard and had their first glimpse of a truly breathtaking sight.

The studio has replicated what was once a gateway on an ancient and strategically important military road. It was known as the straightway because it ran in a straight line for over 1800 Li (about 900 kilometres) and was 80 metres wide in some places!

The road was originally in use during the Qin Dynasty - the first to unite the six kingdoms of China under the first Emperor, Ying Zheng (259 - 210 BC) -  and there were some vibrant models of ancient troops and their vehicles arranged along the length of the road for the contestants to admire. Whilst the delegates were aboard swish new trams, they got the chance to see chariots that would have been in use 4000 years ago and were thought to have inspired the more familiar racing chariots of the Roman Empire.

At the end of the road the delegates visited the imposing Donglian Painting and Calligraphy museum, where they got the chance to leave their own handwriting samples on a specially provided banner. They were then treated to refreshments whilst enjoying a traditional dance performance. Lunch followed soon afterwards in a fantastic yurt setting.

There was just time later on for a quick visit to Ordos Zoo where the lucky contestants spotted a tiger or two!
