A Panel Discussion on “Women’s Role in Promoting Sustainable Peace

The International Women’s Day is celebrated annually around the world to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by those who have played an important role in women’s empowerment. This year, under the global theme “Pledge for Gender Parity” and to give the current importance to consolidate peace in South Sudan, the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Beauties of South Sudan, and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) have held a panel discussion to discuss how women can contribute in promoting and sustaining peace within their communities and for South Sudan at large.

On this such special occasion, Ms. Anea Garcia, Miss Grand International 2015, was one of the panelists including Ms. Awut Deng Achuil, Honorable Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Mr. Nyoul Justin Yac, Deputy Chair of South Sudan Human Rights Commission, Ms. Sarah Gabriel, Beauties of South Sudan (South Sudan Representative for Miss Grand International 2016), Ms. Zeinab Yassin, Chairlady of South Sudan General Women Association, Ms. Christine Mori, Lecturer at College of Social and Economic Studies and Chairlady of Working Women Association, Juba University and the panel was moderated by Ms. Atong Demach, JICA PR Adviser and CEO of Beauties of South Sudan.

In addition, the opening remarks were given by Dr. Mitsuaki Furukawa, Chief Representative of JICA South Sudan and Ms. Awut Deng Achuil, Honorable Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare and the closing remarks were given by Mr. Masahiko Kiya, Ambassador of Japan. Furthermore, the audiences included a number of government officials and women groups from various professions.

“Women should be heard as much as they should be seen equally. By being able to express ideas, talking and listening to the people around you or even being interviewed by the press, I feel I am doing my duty as a typical woman and as Miss Grand International. To hear about how women can contribute in promoting sustainable peace in South Sudan has made me a woman completely.” Touchingly said Anea Garcia during the panel discussion.
