Federer talks the talk at French Open By Howard Hendrich : ATP Tennis writer
Even though its the only Grand Slam site where he hasnt won a championship, Roger Federer feels quite comfortable in the City of Lights.
Thats in part because hes fluent in French, just one of his many languages, a list that includes English and Swiss German.
Everything here is very natural, very easy,
Federer said.
What about when he goes to Spain, the land of his rival, Rafael Nadal? Thats another story.
I felt like its hard to get around sometimes in Madrid, for instance, where I dont speak the language, Federer said.
I dont go to many countries where, you know, I dont speak the language.
He has lost in the last three French Open finals, each time to Nadal.
But Federer did end a five-match losing streak to Nadal which included the championship matches at Roland Garros and Wimbledon last year, and the Australian Open this year by beating him in the Madrid Open final last weekend.
That victory gave Federer his first title of 2009.
And as good as hes been over the past several years, collecting 13 Grand Slam titles, he does take time to assess the state of his game.
I always question myself, you know. Ive questioned myself in the best of times, when I was winning four, five titles in a row.
What can I improve?
What can I change to get better?
I think its important to do that when youre on top of your game, but also again when things were not going so well, Federer said.
There are certain times during the year where you just have to sit down and analyze: Are you happy with whats going on? Could you do more? Should you do less?
Switzerland's Roger Federer arrives for a training session for the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadum in Paris, Friday May 22, 2009.

For the first time ever, Rafael Nadal has been defeated here at Roland Garros! Before the rest of the mens draw get too excited however, it should be pointed out that his loss came as part of the traditional "Benny Berthet" charity exhibition matches.
Rafa went down 7-5 to Argentinas Brian Dabul on Philippe Chatrier court in a single-set encounter, with the brief shower which made the court slippery towards the end perhaps seeing Nadal decide that discretion was the better part of valour.
Various exhibition matches were played throughout the day on Philippe Chatrier, Suzanne Lenglen and No1 courts, with the proceeds going to five charities which are partners of the event.
Despite the overcast weather, there was a good turn-out with fans enjoying some spectacular tennis, including appearances from local favourites Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Fabrice Santoro amongst others.
