Nadals struggle leaves Wimbledon in doubt By MATTIAS KAREN, AP Sports Writer
LONDON (AP)Rafael Nadal looked hampered by his injured knees during a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Lleyton Hewitt in an exhibition Thursday.
He will decide Friday if he can defend his Wimbledon title.
Nadal played without tape on his knees but frequently appeared a step slow on the grass court at Hurlingham Club. This was Nadals first match since his loss to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the French Open. He pulled out of last weeks grass-court tournament at Queens Club to rest his knees.
Nadal looked increasingly frustrated against the hard-serving Hewitt, repeatedly failing to get to balls he normally reaches and struggling with unforced backhand errors. He frequently muttered to himself in Spanish after missed shots and often had to rely on his top-spin forehand to escape trouble.
He did not speak to reporters, but uncle and coach Toni Nadal said it was still uncertain whether he can play at Wimbledon, which starts Monday.
Nadal plays another match Friday against Stanislas Wawrinka. Toni Nadal said the top-ranked player will decide after that. When pressed about Wimbledon, the coach did not sound optimistic.
If its me, Im (flying) to Mallorca, he said, referring to the island where Nadal grew up.
Nadal has struggled with knee problems for months and missed last years Davis Cup final after he was diagnosed with tendinitis in November.
Toni Nadal said his nephews main problem is bending properly, and wearing some kind of support wouldnt help. He said Nadal has been receiving treatment during his week in London, but its not enough.
In the other singles match Thursday at the small private club by the River Thames, Tomas Berdych beat Marat Safin 7-6 (7), 6-4.
Hewitt challenged Nadal from the start, forcing the Spaniard to save two break points in the first game before holding serve. The former top-ranked Australian then managed to break at love for a 3-2 lead after three unforced errors from Nadal. Hewitt held his next service game at love behind a barrage of aces.
Nadal had his first break point in the first game of the second set, but Hewitt saved it with a service winner. Nadal set up another break point at 2-2 with a good forehand volley, but Hewitt made a forehand winner down the line before holding.
Hewitt then broke again for a 4-3 lead after Nadal sent a forehand long, and the Australian converted his second match point after Nadal sent a lunging backhand long.

The question of the tournament remains unanswered: Will Rafa play at Wimbledon or not?
Rafael Nadal played an exhibition match against Lleyton Hewitt today at Londons Hurlingham Club and things did not go well for the Spaniard. CBSSports.com reports that Rafa, who is suffering from tendinitis in both knees, was limited during his loss to Hewitt, 6-4. 6-3. The Spaniard looked a step slow and made a number of unforced errors.
Nadal is scheduled to play another exo match against Stanislas Wawrinka tomorrow.
Heres the money quote from Uncle Toni:
Its the first match (on grass), and well have to wait until tomorrow, Toni Nadal said. I dont know. Well have to wait until tomorrow, and well see then.
When pressed about Nadals chances of playing at Wimbledon, his coach did not sound optimistic.
If its me, Im (flying) to Mallorca, he said, referring to the island Nadal grew up on. This comes after the promising news yesterday that Nadal and Andy Murray practiced together at Wimbledon. Andy Murray told The Telegraph afterwards: Rafa was hitting the ball well.
*UPDATE* Via Rafas website:
I love to play at the Hurlingham Club. Todays match was a real test, as close to reality as it could get. I will come back and play again and then make my decision about playing at Wimbledon or not. Rafa will hold a press conference tomorrow after his match, where he should announce his final decision re: Wimbledon. Come on Stan, let Rafa win tomorrow and get some confidence! The tennis world needs Nadal on Centre Court!
Former world number three Ivan Ljubicic limped out of the Eastbourne International after injuring his ankle in a heavy fall.
More StoriesInjured Monfils out of Wimbledon Women: Wozniack last seed left Men's drawsheet Four days before Wimbledon begins the tall Croatian winced in agony as he was helped off court by a trainer, to applause from the Devonshire Park crowd, after being forced out of his quarter-final against fourth-seeded Frenchman Fabrice Santoro.
Ljubicic, who has dropped to 30th in the world after being troubled by back and hamstring injuries last year, had won the first set 6-3 and was 2-4 down in the second.
Racing to the net to reach one of Santoro's trademark delicate shots, he skidded on the grass, fell and cried out in agony, clutching his left ankle.
Santoro, playing his last year on the ATP Tour at the age of 36, threw off his cap, dropped his racket and ran to the court-side freezer to fetch bags of ice which he applied to Ljubicic's ankle while officials summoned the trainer.
Tour officials said the Croatian, who has never gone beyond the third round at Wimbledon, would have an MRI scan later on Thursday.
"It is not a typical ankle twist but we are not 100 percent sure what it is. We will have to find out how long it will take after the evaluation," Ljubicic said via an ATP spokesman, adding that he was "very disappointed".
Ljubicic's retirement gave Santoro a place in the semi-finals of the new men's event.

Spain's Rafael Nadal serves during an exhibition match against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in which Nadal lost at the Hurlingham Club, in London, Friday June 19, 2009.
WIMBLEDON, England (AP)Marcos Baghdatis has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a knee injury. He has been replaced by Karol Beck of Slovakia.
The 95th-ranked Cypriot, a Wimbledon semifinalist and Australian Open finalist in 2006, had been drawn Friday to play the 21st-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain in the first round.
Baghdatis had pulled out of his second-round match at the Ordina Open in the Netherlands on Wednesday, citing a knee problem.
Nadal withdraws from Wimbledon Friday, 19 June 2009 Written by Byron Vale
Rafael Nadal has announced he will not defend his Wimbledon title.
The world number one and top seed had said after the French Open that he would not play Wimbledon if he was not 100% and so it has come to pass.
"Im here and I'm just not 100%. I'm better than what I was a couple of weeks ago but I dont feel right," Nadal told a packed press conference on Friday evening at the All England Club.
"To not play Wimbledon is one of the toughest decisions of my career."
After suffering a shock defeat in the French Open to Robin Soderling, Nadal received treatment on his knees in Barcelona and skipped the traditional Wimbledon warm-up at Queens in an effort to be fit for The Championships. He was diagnosed with tendinitis in both quadriceps tendons as well as a small amount of fluid on the kneecaps.
"I tried everything. I didn't feel terrible but also not close to my best. When I enter a tournament my goal is winning and my feeling right now is I'm not ready to win.
"It's very painful for me but I can't play at the tournament this year. It's tough but it is what it is."
Nadal's absence will cause a reshuffle in the mens singles draw. Number five seed Juan Martin Del Potro replaces Nadal at the top of the draw. The 17th seed James Blake moves to line 65 to take Del Potro's position. Nicolas Kiefer moves to line 56 to take Blake's position and lucky loser Thiago Alves takes Kiefer's position on line 61.
Nadal revealed that he had been playing with considerable pain and he didn't know how long he would be out of tennis. But he said he expected to fully recover from his knee problems and that he would have a "long career".
"I played with some problems on the knee for the last few months. I've been making efforts to play week after week. The truth is that sportsmen always play with pain and don't know where the limit is, where you can get to. I think I reached that limit now.
"I will work very hard to comeback as soon as possible. One of the problems is Im thinking more about the knees than what is happening on court and its very difficult to play like that."
When Nadal was asked about his many fans and how disappointed they would be that he was not appearing at Wimbledon, the 23-year-old replied: "no more than me".
Nadal also said he was not concerned that his absence would open the door for Roger Federer to reclaim the number one world ranking. "If I lose the number one ranking Im going to accept it like the four years I was number two and work hard to improve and recover."
Official ruling. If seeds 1-4 withdraw before the order of play is released on Sunday, the fifth seed takes their place in the draw. The 17th seed takes the place of the fifth seed.
