Medical Biology Core Labs 2008-2009

Medical
Biology Core Labs 2008-2009

The
following is a list of 22 biology laboratory exercises that have a medical or
healthcare emphasis. All of the
following labs have already been approved by the Grossmont Healthcare District
and RAHSI grants for purchase. Each of
the 22 laboratory exercises correlate to a unit of study that should be present
in a 1-year medical biology course. These lab exercises can of course be incorporated into multiple units or
rearranged and used in other units if desired. The majority of these labs get
the unit concept across, but are not time intensive. Included in this resource for each lab is
ordering instructions, set-up help/tips, case studies, and a medical
application articles for each lab. In
some instances a student lab worksheet has also been included that is very
similar in structure to that of the lab kit. Additional labs that I have utilized in my classes before are also
included.

You
will also find that many of these labs are easily replaced year-to-year making them
economical. You will find this
information in the ordering instructions and the reordering summary sheet. Each of the lab kits are available for review
before purchase by contacting me at the e-mail below. All reproducible medical
applications, student worksheets, and case studies present in this resource are
in Word format. This allows teachers to
change wording, add questions, change format, etc. on all of these documents to
make the laboratory exercises individualized for your program if desired.

These
labs are by no means an exhaustive collection to be used in the medical biology
course, but are instead a collection of common lab procedures used in a medical
setting that all students should have the opportunity to be exposed to. Some labs may also be presented as
demonstrations if desired. Any lab that you may feel unsure of or need
additional support in setting up feel free to contact me for help or advice: hpeterson@guhsd.net.

CORE LAB
RESOURCES INCLUDE:

Ordering Instructions &
Tips
–
Included in each unit folder you will find a document that contains all
ordering instructions:

  • Lab summary, company,
contact information, cost, order number, supply amount

This
document will also contain Tips for each lab

  • Difficulty level,
results students should see, materials summary, how to stretch out
supplies, information on how to restock, time allotment

Included as a separate
document, “Ordering Core Labs” is
also an ordering sheet for ALL of the core labs together.

Medical Application – This is one of the most
important resources for the medical biology core labs. Included in each unit folder you will find an
article that covers a major healthcare topic related to the laboratory
exercise. All articles were found on healthcare sites and have been approved
for classroom use ONLY. Any other use of
these articles is a violation of the copyright. DO NOT – post these articles online, make more copies than needed for
classroom activities, and/or mass produce for any reason beyond classroom
education.

Each
article allows the instructor to add critical thinking questions and the first
two units have example questions added. Questions can be posed to students during class following the article as
well if desired. This resource also may
be used in several ways:

  • As a teacher resource
to present to their class a topic related to the laboratory exercise

  • As an informational
    hand out for students

  • As an assignment for
students to complete as a post or pre-lab

  • As an assignment for
students to complete a further research assignment on

  • Used to facilitate
    classroom discussion

Case Studies – These are great ways to
get students involved in medical situations through research and critical
thinking. Some case studies may take
several days and others no more than a period. They range in difficulty from lower level high school courses all the
way through college courses. All case
studies are from the University of Buffalo case study compilation and copyright
and resource information are available in the “case study copyright
information”.

Student Worksheet – These will not be
included in all unit folders. This may
be done for labs that do not contain enough medical emphasis within their
instructions already or if laboratory supplies can be purchased separately for
much less than the kit. The student
worksheet will include lab objective, list of supplies, lab instructions, data
section, and analysis questions.
