ทิวลิป เป็นดอกไม้เมืองหนาวที่มีถิ่นกำเนิดในทวีปยุโรป เป็นดอกไม้สัญลักษณ์ของฮอลแลนด์ มีอยู่หลายสี ดอกทิวลิปจะปลูกได้ต้องใช้อุณหภูมิที่เหมาะสม คือไม่เกิน 25 องศาเซลเซียส

ที่มาของชื่อ
      แม้ว่าทิวลิปจะเป็นดอกไม้ที่ทำให้นึกถึงฮอลแลนด์ แต่ทั้งดอกไม้และชื่อมีที่มาจากจักรวรรดิเปอร์เชีย ทิวลิปหรือ “lale” (จากเปอร์เชีย لاله, “lâleh”) เช่นเดียวกับที่เรียกกันในตุรกี เป็นดอกไม้ท้องถิ่นของตุรกี, อิหร่าน, อัฟกานิสถาน และบางส่วนของเอเชียกลาง แม้ว่าจะไม่ทราบว่าผู้ใดเป็นผู้นำทิวลิปเข้ามาทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของยุโรป แต่ที่สำคัญคือตุรกีเป็นผู้ทำให้ทิวลิปมีชื่อเสียงที่นั่น เรื่องที่เป็นที่ยอมรับกันก็คือ Oghier Ghislain de Busbecqไปเป็นราชทูตของสมเด็จพระจักรพรรดิเฟอร์ดินานด์ที่1 แห่งโรมันอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์ในราชสำนักของสุลต่านสุลัยมานมหาราชแห่งจักรวรรดิออตโตมันในปี ค.ศ. 1554 Busbecq บรรยายในจดหมายถึงดอกไม้ต่างๆ ที่เห็นที่รวมทั้งนาร์ซิสซัส ดอกไฮยาซินธ์ และทิวลิปที่ดูเหมือนจะบานในฤดูหนาวที่ดูเหมือนผิดฤดู (ดู Busbecq, qtd. in Blunt, 7) ในวรรณคดีเปอร์เชียทั้งสมัยโบราณและสมัยใหม่ต่างก็ให้ความสนใจกับดอกไม้ชนิด นี้
      คำว่า “tulip” ที่ในภาษาอังกฤษสมัยแรกเขียนเป็น “tulipa” หรือ “tulipant” เข้ามาในภาษาอังกฤษจากฝรั่งเศสที่แผลงมาจากคำว่า “tulipe” และจากคำโบราณว่า “tulipan” หรือจากภาษาลาตินสมัยใหม่ “tulīpa” ที่มาจากภาษาตุรกี “tülbend” หรือ “ผ้ามัสลิน” (ภาษาอังกฤษว่า “turban” (ผ้าโพกหัว) บันทึกเป็นครั้งแรกในภาษาอังกฤษในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 16 และอาจจะมาจากภาษาตุรกีอีกคำหนึ่งว่า “tülbend” ก็เป็นได้)

       A tulip is a bulbous plant in the genus Tulipa, comprising 109 species with showy flowers, in the family Liliaceae.The species native range includes southern Europe, North Africa, and Asia from Anatolia and Iran in the west to northeast of China. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan. A number of species and many hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, used as pot plants or as fresh cut flowers. Most cultivars of tulip are derived from Tulipa gesneriana.

Origin of the name
      Although tulips are associated with The Netherlands, commercial cultivation of the flower began in the Ottoman Empire. The tulip, or lale as it is also called in Iran and Turkey, is a flower indigenous to a vast area encompassing parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. The word tulip, which earlier appeared in English in forms such as tulipa or tulipant, entered the language by way of French tulipe and its obsolete form tulipan or by way of Modern Latin tulīpa, from Ottoman Turkish tülbend ("muslin" or "gauze"), and is ultimately derived from the Persian language dulband ("turban").

Meanings of Tulips
     The meaning of tulips is generally perfect love. Like many flowers, different colors of tulips also often carry their own significance. Red tulips are most strongly associated with true love, while purple symbolizes royalty. The meaning of yellow tulips has evolved somewhat, from once representing hopeless love to now being a common expression for cheerful thoughts and sunshine.
