Interview with the Soccer Legend: The Kaiser
AT THE ORIENTAL HOTEL, BANGKOK ON NOVEMBER 29, 1999
Last Monday I met English soccer legend Sir Bobby Charlton. This Monday I met another legend. Now, he's German. The Embassy of Germany chose to hold the press conference which drew a large number of news hawks. So, I didn't have to worry about "exclusive interview."
However, this could not bar me from making a personal contact with the Kaiser hehehe. I raised my hand and asked him a question, from my distanced seat in the back row, and it's a good question, about money... (indeed it's my editor's idea.) So, at least he felt my presence at that time.. But there's so many journalists and all had questions. So, I could manage to ask only one from the long list my boss gave me.
After the conference, fans and reporters alike rushed to take pics with him. Unfortunately, some bastard called him and he turned his head away right when my colleague took this pic... Oh Franz, come back here again, please. This time I will hold your head tight!! (Well, the pic shows it quite impossible!!)
This time I was not nervous at all when I met him (oh, sure!). That's good and it boosted my morale... The Bangkok Post sent a junior (three years experiece to my seven and a half months.) He didn't ask a single question.
But too soon to feel proud. My ed paged me he wanted my story on page one!! Oh... the panic again stroke I went home and began to write my article... but.. it seemed my thought fell apiece and I couldn't gather it up. I took three hours, finally, before filing it through the Internet...
Of course, too late. I had to content with the "back page" which is the so-called front for sports staff, anyway. -_-'
