ชาวจีนที่มาแต่งงานกับคนพื้นเมืองในคาบสมุทรมาลายามีวัฒนธรมเฉพาะเรียกว่า Peranakan และเมื่อชาวจีนแต่งงานกับคนพื้นเมืองมีลูกชายเรียกว่า บาบ๋า เป็นผู้หญิงเรียกว่า ยองย้า
เราจะพบเห็นวัฒนธรรม Peranakan ที่คล้ายคลึงกันที่เมืองมะละกา ปีนัง ประเทศมาเลเซีย ที่ประเทศสิงคโปร์ และที่จังหวัดภูเก็ต โดยเฉพาะอาคารบ้านเรือน อาหารการกิน และการแต่งกาย ผู้หญิงจะสวมเสื้อลูกไม้และผ้าโสร่งปาเต๊ะสีสันฉูดฉาด
ที่จังหวัดภูเก็ต หากท่านเดินทางมาในตัวเมือง บริเวณถนนถลาง ซอยรมณีย์ ถนนดีบุก ถนนกระบี่ และถนนเยาวราช ท่านจะพบเห็นอาคารที่เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมจีนผสมยุโรปที่มีความเก่าแก่และมีความเป็นมาทางประวัติศาสตร์ในยุคเหมืองแร่รุ่งเรือง เป็นย่านการค้าเมืองเก่าภูเก็ตเมื่อกว่าร้อยปีมาแล้ว

"Peranakan" is a blend of cultures originated from Chinese settlers who married locals in Malay Peninsula. Their male descendants are called ‘Baba’ and the female called ‘Nyonya’.
Malacca, Penang, Malaysia, Singapore and Phuket share a similarity in the Peranakan culture. The culture is reflected in architecture, buildings, cuisine and dresses. Ladies usually wear laced blouses with colorful sarongs called ‘Pateh’.
In Phuket the reflection of such unique culture can be seen in the city area along Thalang Road, Soi Rommanee, Dibuk, Yaowarat and Krabi roads. The Sino-Portuguese architectural design reflects Phuket’s wealth during the tin mining period over a century ago.
