STATEMENT SEPTEMBER 7, 2007
It is very unusual during an APEC meeting for discussions on a declaration to under go a debate. Currently, discussions on the APEC Climate Change declaration went till 8pm last night and discussions will begin again at 2pm.
Clearly, countries such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand will not agree to being pushed into an anti-Kyoto agreement in Sydney.
These are the countries who have already signed up to Kyoto, with the full realization that in the future they will need to reduce their green house gas emissions and embrace real solutions such as energy efficiency and renewable energy.
It is ironic that a government such as Australia who is peddling false solutions such as coal, a climate culprit, to developing countries such as the Philippines is also blaming developing nations for the deadlock on the APEC Climate Change Declaration.
John Howard and George Bush have very little credibility on the issue at the APEC specially that both governments spent a decade undermining global agreements to combat climate change.
Both Howard and Bush should just give up pushing at the APEC for a new international agreement that is alternative to Kyoto.
If Howard and Bush are sincere in addressing the issue of climate change, both governments should ratify Kyoto and set legally-binding targets to reduce green house gas emissions.
Last Sunday, 12 activists were arrested and given absurd bail conditions after exposing the true agenda of APEC which is Australia Pushing Export Coal. The team challenged the restrictions last Thursday and all the bail conditions were thrown out by the court.
---------
Last Wednesday, Greenpeace polar bears paraded ice heads of John Howard and George Bush at key sites of Sydney such as the Sydney Harbor, Bondi Beach and the Central Train Station. The bears held messages urging Australia and US government to Ratify the Kyoto Protocol.
Yesterday, activists staged a satire on nuclear barrels and wind turbine costumes battling for Putin and Howard's attention. Climbers also hanged a banner in one of the buildings along Darling Harbor which said Australia Pushing Export Coal. Below is the statement I delivered during the press conference on how the APEC Sydney Declaration is met by skepticism by developing nations.
Today, APEC will leaders sign the Sydney Declaration. Based on a leaked draft from late last night, there is no mention of Kyoto or legally-binding targets. This is unacceptable.
