I think it needs a real folk singer with a pure voice like Joan for this song to work. She is just right for it. So many singers, unknown as well as famous, have unsuccessfully sang this Irish song. I admit this is a hard song to sing but to me, this version by Eva Cassidy is perfection if ever there is perfection. I don't believe anyone can sing this song as beautifully and with as much sincere emotion as Eva. A note I wish to add on Nov1, 2007, for those who do not know, tomorrow Nov 2, 2007 is the 11th anniversary of Eva Cassidy's death 11 years ago. This is a beautiful, no doubt. It is the very opposite of "terrible". It's not only good music, it's great! Mario Lanza has one of the most golden throats God ever put a voice into. However, I think domnutbag's point was that the second half of this song is a prayer, and asks for a more delicate delivery. I'm a singer myself, and let me tell you, this song is a mountain few of us dare to climb. Lanza is up on top the whole time!
