"Pencil Cactus" are quite easy to grow if placed in direct sunshine or very bright indirect light. Water sparingly maybe twice a month... allowing most of the soil mass to dry out. Feed bi-monthly but don't feed the plant if the soil is extremely dry... the soil needs to be a little moist before fertilizing. When your plant becomes to tall, cut it back to the desired height. Wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt when pruning "Pencil Cactus". The sap may cause skin irritation. Be careful not to get the sap in your eyes.
Perth woman injured by poisonous garden plant

A Perth woman is recovering after a nasty clash with a poisonous succulent plant at her holiday home in Jurien Bay.
Maureen Ritchie from Mt Helena bumped into the plant while gardening, getting sap on the side of her face, ear and neck. The sap also ran into her eyes, causing excruciating pain and such severe swelling she could not see for an hour.
She needed hospital treatment for her eyes, and for blisters that developed on her face and neck.
Ms Ritchie took part of the plant this week to the Department of Agriculture and Food's Pest and Disease Information Service (PaDIS) in South Perth, where it was identified as Euphorbia tirucalli, also known as pencil tree or naked lady.
DAFWA weeds officer Sandy Lloyd said the plant was fairly common, especially in older gardens.
"Euphorbia tirucalli is not a true cactus, but it looks similar to a cactus without prickles. It has a white latex type of sap that is very caustic," she said.
"Many people are now looking at cacti and succulents as 'water wise' plants, but they should be aware that some may be poisonous or prickly, and will harm people who come into contact with them.
"Euphorbia tirucalli should not be touched, and contact with the sap should be avoided. If sap does get on the skin or in eyes, people are advised to wash thoroughly and promptly seek medical advice," Ms Lloyd said.
"Definitely people should not attempt to drive if the sap has got into their eyes."
Ms Lloyd said home gardeners should also not attempt to remove large Euphorbia tirucalli plants from their garden.
"The plants can reach six metres or more, so they should seek professional help to have it removed, and not risk injury," she said.
