The Zen Meal that Took Some Time
The Zen Meal that Took Some Time
A samurai was invited to lunch by a Zen master. The master cooked the meal himself, taking a long time. Occasionally he would reappear and reassure that the food was coming.
Samurai were important people who were used to deferential treatment. Eventually the nobleman was hopping mad.
Then, just as his temper was about to overflow, the Zen master appeared with the food. They ate and the samurai, who had calmed down by now, complimented his host on the meal.
"Thank you," replied the host,
"all it takes is time."
Moral: Just as all it took was some time for the food to be ready, all it took was patience to wait for it. Just as all it took was some time for the samurai to become angry, all it took was time for him to become grateful. Everything takes time, and given enough time, everything changes, as nothing is permanent. If there is nothing you can do in the moment, take the time to observe the changes in your mind. Interestingly, when you do so, there will be less emotional upheavals and depressions.

365 Smiles from Buddha (Robert Allen) | Moral by Shen Shi'an
