Reading on the Rise : A New Chapter in American Literacy
เมื่อไม่กี่ปีก่อน National Endowment for the Arts ได้ประกาศผลสำรวจอัตราการอ่านหนังสือที่ลดต่ำลงของอเมริกันชน ผลสำรวจครั้งนั้นส่งผลให้ นักคิด นักเขียน ปัญญาชนในอเมริกาออกมาวิพากษ์กันอย่างกว้างขวาง หลายคนวิตกว่าสังคมอเมริกากำลังเสื่อมถอยเมื่อผู้คนไม่อ่านหนังสือ ไมเคิล เดอร์ดาบอกว่า นี่เป็นการสำรวจในภาพรวมของ Fiction ทุกแขนง ถ้าเจาะลึกลงไปเฉพาะ Serious Literature ยิ่งน้อยลงไปอีก
ล่าสุด National Endowment for the Arts ได้ประกาศผลสำรวจในปี 2008 ออกมา พบว่าอัตราการอ่านของอเมริกันชนเพิ่มสูงขึ้น ตามรายงานข่าวจากนิวยอร์กไทม์ และวอชิงตันโพสต์ สำหรับรายงานดาวน์โหลดได้ที่นี่ครับ
ในส่วนของเมืองไทย เรามักพูดถึงผลสำรวจในอดีตที่บอกกันว่า คนไทยอ่านหนังสือเฉลี่ยปีละ 6 บรรทัด ซึ่งตอนที่ผมได้ยินครั้งแรก ก็แปลกใจเล็กน้อย แต่พอมองจากคนรอบตัว พบว่าไม่มีใครอ่านหนังสือ ยิ่งเป็น Fiction นี่เลิกพูดได้เลย ไม่มีใครอ่านกัน ดังนั้นเมื่อเอาคนอ่านหนังสือที่มีจำนวนน้อย มาเฉลี่ยกับคนไม่อ่านหนังสือซึ่งเป็นคนกลุ่มใหญ่ ผลลัพธ์ที่ออกมา 6 บรรทัด จึงไม่ใช่เรื่องน่าแปลกใจแต่อย่างใด

Art delights, instructs, consoles. It educates our emotions. And it remembers. As Robert Frost once said about poetry, "It is a way of remembering that which it would impoverish us to forget." Art awakens, enlarges, refines, and restores our humanity. You don't outgrow art. The same work can mean something different at each stage of your life. A good book changes as you change..
