17. distraction = (n) = to make someone stop giving their attention to something I can turn the television off if you find it a distraction.
18. rival = (n, adj, vt) = a person, group, etc. competing with others for the same thing or in the same area He beat his closest/nearest rival by 20 marks.
19. charge = (n, vi, vt) = (of the police) to make a formal statement saying that someone is accused of a crime She's been charged with murder.
20. attempt = (n,vt) = to try to do something, especially something difficult There's no point in even attempting an explanation - he'll never listen.
21. murder = (n,vt) = the crime of intentionally killing a person Two sisters have been charged with (= officially accused of) murder.
22. jail = (n, vt) = a place where criminals are kept to punish them for their crimes, or where people accused of crimes are kept while waiting for their trials They spent ten years in jail for fraud.
23. plenty = (n, adv.) = enough or more than enough, or a large amount We've got plenty of time before we need to leave for the airport.
