What different are they "Die, Dead, Death"

Die, Dead and Death

Many English language students get confused with different forms of the verb to die.

Die is an intransitive verb. That means it does not require an object.

For example:

His secrets will die with him.
If you water your cacti too much, they will die.
His uncle died in a car accident last month.
Soldiers are proud because they can die for their country.

Dead is an adjective to modify a noun. It can be put before a noun or after the ‘verb to be’.

For example:

Dead men tell no tales.
My grandparents have been dead for a long time.
The father didn't know that his son was dead until he got home.
Vultures, hyenas, and worms eat dead animals.

Death is a noun. It can be a subject or object in a sentence.

For example:

Deaths from AIDS have increased from last year.
Six people were burned to death in the fire last night.
Some Japanese people work themselves to death.
Drinking and driving can cause death.

Nonetheless, die is a very strong word and, therefore, considered impolite. Instead of using the word die, you can say ‘pass away’.

Exercise: Die, Dead and Death

Directions: Choose the word that correctly completes the sentences.

1. The _______ of Princess Diana shocked the whole world.

Thousands of people _______ of cancers every year.

3. The murderer carried the _______ body outside and buried it under a big tree.

4. Snakes shred _______ skin every six months.

5. One may _______ from extended dehydration.

6. Some of the children starved to _______ before help arrived.

7. In the middle ages, the major cause of _______ in women was pregnancy and giving birth.

8. Today nobody in a developed country _______ from malaria.
